James: It doesn't really feel like just a dark version of Peter Pan like, 'oh this is the same thing but edgier'... YT Video Tagline: Peter Pan but edgier.

Funny enough, Peter Pan was set to be a villain in the Fables comic and rumors circulated at one point The Wolf Among Us 2 would have him as the main antagonist.
As fun as the book is, this is the most edge-lord thing i’ve ever read. Is fun and captivating, but be prepared to cringe at some plot points and scene put there just for the sake of shock value. Im talking to you, saving random war children, then teaching them to kill drug dealers, then kidnapping them only to forget they ever existed. And religion bad.
As someone who intends to read every Peter Pan inspired book I’m so glad that I could hear your review on it. So far my favourite retellings are “lost boy” (horror) by Christina Henry and “tiger lily” (romance) by Jodi Lynn Anderson.
Have you read Peter and the Starcatchers? It might be a bit young of a book to consider, but I don't think your experience of every Peter Pan inspired book would be complete without it!(I also liked Tiger Lily!)
@@maddiesmith8295 you make me want to cryyyyyy! It’s my favourite book series I read it when I was 12. I’ve only read the original trilogy. I then read it to my baby brother when he was 12 and it still held up! I love those books so so much!!!
You should read the Nevermor Saga by Lani Lenore, it's a dark retelling of peter pan using the concept of dreams and nightmares in the story. Loved it entirely!!!!! Edit: If anyone reading this comment is a Patreon, please recommend the first book to James
@@fena_reti Thank you for replying, this author is great and I hope to hel her gain the game she deserves from her books, all of them are great dark retellings. Ps: Love your videos. Keep up the good work!!!
Thank you as much as i like the child thief I never liked the book for judging Nick as an unappreciative brat since his mom and grandmother stood there while he got physically abused by the drug dealers. They were grown women but the thirteen year old was supposed to protect them when they as adults couldn't do anything to protect him what bs was that? Uthur was just your typical bully character for the main character to flex on agreed he was annoying!
I loved this book when I read it a couple of years ago. Sadly only two of Broms books have been released here in Germany, the other one beeing Krampus: The Yule Lord.
I can finally say: I read this book because of you! And I loved it. Totally agree on the ulfgher thing. Still, really good story, specially because at one point I discovered myself not thinking "how will they get out of this one" but rather "WILL they get out of this one???"... Not being able to predict something is refreshing
This reminded me about another retelling of Peter and the Starchatchers. I remember really enjoying the series as a kid, but I don't know if it still holds up. I think its a good example of a not super edgy Peter Pan retelling!
I never imagined finding the Child Thief talked about online, even less so on your channel. Loved it as a teenager. It has few, but super pretty artwork too. 100% give it a read, if you enjoy teenage novels and can deal with some edge.
Is the place called Avalon... Written like that because than it is most likely a reference to the king Arthur legend.. At least thats what I would guess
Brom's Krampus is pretty fun too. *Peter is still the main villian, like in the original story. Kidnapping leader who takes underage boys to fight his personal war. Little shit.
It actually sounds a lot like once upon a time, with the fachback ad plot being messy, dunno if they ripped something off of the book because they have pan actually as one season villain, and its very fanficy in the best way possible, i mean there everyone is oddly related, pan is the horrible dad abandonong antihero/villain rumple(played excellent by robert carlyle) Also hook is and also there to save his adoptive son fogire, a grandson of rumple. But one s wife left him but seemed stolen, and one murdered said wife in blind revenge in a moment, revenge argg, but they have to work together. They villains are pretty mich mostly reddemed, and thats, eeh, but pan is the worst.
I need someone to recommend the cradle series to him, one of the best series out there right now and one of my all time favorites. I cant get tired of it I just keep rereading and rereading it over and over to pick up on every little detail that is laid out though out the series truly masterful writing.
Brom is great, if you’re interested in reading more from him I’d recommend Lost Gods. Love to see people reviewing this author he doesn’t get enough credit...but I love the hair clips more
So, a group of individuals called the Flesh Eaters that possess great physical strength and are lead by a captain who's backed up by a religious leader? Sounds familiar.
looking at the cover me thinks Brom got inspired by his drawings of Harlequin. at it seems the main character is very similar in nature and even motivation. huh.

@Imani** No, a serve is a peasant in the medieval times.
I would like to read something from James Tulos
Me too
One day hopefully!

Todd here. Nice review James! I stumbled upon this book at Barnes & Noble. Looks like a good read.

Listened to audio. The way the narrator says oh Peter made me sick and the text says it a ton.

Avalon comes from Arthurian mythology and is the home of the fae or faeries.

I love Brom, he has a really cool illustrated novel, like a grown up picture book called The Plucker.
My wife bought this book a week ago at B&N off the cover alone and seeing this pop up today made me happy.
There's also the Thomas Ligotti's short story The Frolic which is a pretty dark re-telling of the Peter Pan story.
Brom's Krampus is pretty fun too.

Agreed! “The Plucker” was my first introduction to Brom.
Can you do a review on The Power of Five series? I think you would genuinely enjoy it
You need to read Krampus in this case by the same author
I read over 200 pages but then decided to DNF it.
Your hair cut looks straight outta the 70s, it’s a nice different
I crack up so much from your thumbnails

What was that transition song.
Do a reaction of last expanse book and thoughts on show getting cancelled again
It wasn't cancelled 🙄 they decided to end it due to a variety of factors
Ow the edge

ffs, looking at the synopsis on wikipedia it really looks like a mangled Harlequin's Back.
Guess I'll give this a read, and watch the spoilers section in a while

Interesting
I like Brom's book. Since it is the season please check out Krampus. Though I like Lost Gods more.
