This! It`s not a performance, the empathy is actually not there. It`s a lack of empathy born out of anger and pain. I truly feel completely cold about this. I feel pretty sorry for the shooter though, who got so desperate about the situation that he was willing to throw his life away to do this.
Weird how needing to become numb to abuses that everyone knows are wrong but nobody can do anything about might lead to continued numbness or even relief when something, anything, however problematic, is done that makes “do something” sound like less of a naive idea.
Pretty sad to see all the people grieving loved ones in the (far too many) comments I've read over the days, reduced to 'performative' and 'edge-lords.'
This kind of rhetoric about the shooter and his motivations remind me of the way the media as well as people in general used to talk about the suffragette movement. They had to resort to violence and they were vilified by the media at the time but it was the violence that got them what they wanted and we look back on that violence and see it as not only necessary but also fundamental to their struggle. Violence happens when people are left with no choice. And violence against a system of oppression is definitely valid, especially when the morally good and legal means have been corrupted to the benefit of the system of oppression. The CEO, despite being a human being, is one of the heads of that system. Time and time again the lower classes have to resort to violence to fight for what amounts to basic humans rights and it is time we drop this facade of moral centrism where "nothing can justify the shooter's actions". It is harmful and only benefits the oppressors.
I’d like to recommend reading “Why Civil Resistance Works” by Erica Chenoweth. I’d also like to suggest that the reason media outlets are all taking this tone is because they have a responsibility not to promote violence. Whether you think it’s justified or not, members of the media have an ethical responsibility not to celebrate, glorify or promote violence. Also, the shooter’s intention might’ve been about the oppressive healthcare system, but that was targeted political violence against a single individual. Think about what it would mean if they were endorsing the shooter’s actions. That’s not the way to fight oppression.

The problem with a public option rather than single-payer public health insurance is that doctors and other providers have the prerogative to refuse to see patients based on what kind of insurance they have. I had always thought that Medicare was very much like the public health care coverage I have in Ontario, Canada, but a few years ago I found out that doctors can choose to not accept Medicare patients, which if f-ing appalling.
The reason doctors choose not to take certain health plans is because they are administratively or financially unviable. Would you take a job that paid you $20/hour but cost you $200/day to get to? I work in a clinic that is primarily Medicare and Medicaid and we are having to discontinue a lot of services because reimbursement for them is so low that it will cost us money to provide them.

"We should take him up on that." WTF are you talking about ? He isn't serious about any of that s**t he said. He is doing an interview with someone who reads as a bit moderate. So he is trying to moderate his rhetoric IN THIS INTERVIEW ! That's all. He doesn't mean any of it. He's an empty mirror who feels most comfortable in the company of people who have worse character and intentions than he does. They make him feel better about his own abhorrence. And he doesn't care about what he gives them power to do. He only want the facade of public accolades and to feel secure that he will never face any penalty for any wrong doing ever again. 'Murica gave him his wish. Now watch as he sets the tRump family up as national royalty in perpetuity. We will NEVER get rid of this stain.
To the point about providers charging a lot: the reason they have to is rhe insurance companies will say something along the lines of "we will pay you 15% of the listed price for this service" so the providers have to raise the cost of the service to astronomical levels just to make a reasonable amount of money. This completely screws over people who want to pay out of pocket or dont have insurance but it is the game that has to be played. As providers we have to spend as much or more time on dealing with how to get paid by insurance as we do how to actually help the patient. This is why there is a rise in self-pay, no insurance accepted clinics across the country.
Im sorry John, but bloodhounds are almost never the attack dogs. I'll admit that my first thoughts about the shooting basically amounted to malicious glee. The euphoria of that came down after a couple of days. This was not because suddenly I felt particularly sad for the man who apparently increased UH's profits by ~30% over the last few years by using AI to increase their denial numbers. After my thoughts on the event settled a bit, I realized that I mostly felt incredibly sad. I'm sad that people had to witness the assassination. I'm sad that the gathering in the hotel went on as planned after the shooting. I'm sad that Mr. Mangione was in such a hopeless position through no fault of his own that he believed (quite correctly IMO) that this was his only path to receive any kind of recompense. I'm sad that while he will likely spend the rest of his life in prison, no one at UH will face any consequences for their collective actions. I'm sad that politicians will use internet squabbling as an excuse to further ignore the deplorable state of the US healthcare system. That CEO can go eff himself. I don't give a flip about him. The other executives should be scared. They would not be in this position if they had not made billions off the backs of sick people. I'm not angry at Lovett, though. He's trying to turn the conversation away from further violence and toward actually fixing systemic issues. I'm just not sure there's a way to balance having a lack of empathy for insurance executives as well as condemnation for the murder without pissing someone off.
I'm really going to miss What a Weekday. It's more about the reactions, or lack thereof, from the staff members on the couch. It's off topic but I think it's interesting that the Die Hard franchise is having a mini-renaissance among zoomers who like "old movies" but the same absolutely cannot happen for the Lethal Weapon franchise because the first movie in the series features some truly offensive homophobia and the 4th film (which is the best one) deploys offensive Asian stereotypes for comedic effect. Zoomer content creators aren't touching that minefield with a ten foot pole. The message is that if you want your art to last then you have to reject bigotry.

10:55 "they were invited in...", Yeah, that line gets me every time. Let me guess? When exactly were they invited in? Was it before or after they broke the windows & climbed in? Or was it whilst the cops were outside holding the line, shortly before all hell broke loose & the line was attacked. They could not have possibly meant when the cops lured them toward a different direction in order to safely get the congressional leaders & their staff to a safe locale. After all, by then the insurrectionists were already in the building. Invitations to enter, are not usually given after the invitees have already been wondering the halls spreading feces upon the walls or chasing the occupants (in this case the cops) around for a bit. So again I ask, when exactly were these insurrectionists invited inside the building?

Ins doesn't just screw its customers, it screws paying the providers as well.. I can't find a decent therapist for my son because none of them take insurance anymore due to not getting paid in a timely manner.
If we dropped the senior gap and saved lowered the cost of coverage. Does anyone think we would see that, or would the saved funds go into the shareholders pockets while we continue to die.
Damn I really like the weekday ones
I obviously don’t condone murder. Yet I’m actually more shocked that we have not seen something like this before now.
Let’s just hope he doesn’t die. JD Vance is actually competent and we do not need that.
OH NO!!! You’re ending what a Week Day. 😢
Im sorry John, but bloodhounds are almost never the attack dogs. Bloodhounds are the wrinkly pups that you bring out for community events cause they specifically aren't attack dogs so people can per them. They're the dogs they use to sniff out a missing child because the dog is not trained to attack.
It's not about the money.... it's about sending a message.
It might have been about monopoly money.
I am Robert Paulson.
Lovett, mama mia that's a spicy racism!
People policing reactions to the uhc murder have excellent insurance and dont worry about things like cancer bankrupting you and your family or insurance denying life-saving care for a child.
Democrats gave him ALLLLLLL THE MONEY He wanted for his wall and he STILL DID NOT TAKE THE DEAL . At the time ( Chuck SHUMER , stated , “it’s difficult to make a deal with jello “”
Why the obsession with Medicare? What about universal health care? Medicare is not inexpensive for the patient.
Expansion of a familiar sounding program triggers fewer cries of "Marxism!"
Universal sounds like something for nothing; Didn't Earn It.
As someone on Medicaid, it literally better than any insurance I’ve paid for. I had a tumor removed from my head and paid zero dollars
@ So glad such a serious medical condition was paid for! I hope you are recovering. Other countries can’t believe what Americans pay for health care-and this is the richest country in the world. Our priorities are in the wrong place. My husband and I transitioned from ACA to Medicare and pay more on Medicare now that we are older? How does that make sense? A simpler universal system for all would be much cheaper for everyone-business, government, providers, patients. But maybe I’m the crazy one. Hmmmm, maybe we spend way too much on the military-are we up to $3B a day yet?
I remember those DDT spray tank trucks coming through my neighborhood. Our mothers made us stay inside for a full hour before we went back out to run and play and roll around in the DDT. I wonder why we all have allergies & asthma, skin & lung conditions & cancer?
I was fascinated by mutant dandelions, up to six flower heads stuck together on a fluted, fused stalk.
The government assured us it was perfectly safe! I live on an EPA Superfund site. And I know I'm not the only one.
@@Roberta-q1q omg
Some staffers appear on Lovette or Leave it, but that's usually only when something goes wrong. All Crooked shows need Sarah, Halle, and Kendra sitting nearby looking unimpressed with the proceedings.
I’m going to miss the Weekday shows! Love your cozy, funny, and smart group chats
18:56 Somebody please explain to Eric Adams that those are not original Monopoly rules, and that the cool kids these days are playing purist Monopoly which was meant to evoke hopelessness in the Capitalist system 😆🤟
Awwwww… I’ll miss this show!
Bro should have played as Mario.
Aww, I will miss What A Weekday. I look forward to the mix of humor, conversation and earnest thought. How about you don’t write any jokes for WAW, but just chat once a week?
nose is not "nee" but like the "e" ending in cafe (not "caf-AY").
"Nervous Gentleman's Quarterly" for the win
Pardon him Joe
Pardon Who, Lovett?
You didn't remember the pronunciation le nez . I'm sorry Lovett
He's being true to Google Translate, as he said.
But Google Translate is objectively wrong. (Should sound like 'nay')
@sirspate wow I thought Google translate would be better than that.
Just an aside really. I’m English, I live in France, I’m 71, I pay 60€ a month into the healthcare system and everything is covered.
Thirsting over The Adjuster IS gay rights.
Nooo! What a Week-day was my favourite! Unadulterated Lovett wisdom each week was great! Going to be sad to see it go. 😢😢
Welcome back!! ❤️ Glad you’re feeling better.
STOP THE BS JON
No bigger waste of time than telling Donald Trump ' You can't just do anything you want." He believes he pretty much can. And the Supreme Court pretty much agrees with him.
Sarah, I didn't know about itemized medical bills, so thank you for that.
“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." ― John F. Kennedy
Joe W. Posits: I think people are "thirsting" for Luigi The Assasin because of his unavoidable "Chalamet Eyes!"
[I actually started thinking about this as soon as I saw the 1st images of him - from the Ceiling-Cam at the Hostel - taken after the desk clerk flirted with him and convinced him to lower his mask!]
Oh, google translate missed this one 😬
"le nez" is pronounced more closley to "le NAY" (with the "ay" part being very short).
Love ya, Lovett! Bisous 😘
The exception for jurisdiction in the 14th amendment is primarily directed to members of native tribes.
For what THEY did... honestly... THEY should get a Presidential Medal of Honor.
I love the side plot of encouraging everyone to go see Conclave. Great movie. Joining the chorus,
But this is the best format.
Jon, can you just read what Trump said? I'm trying to avoid hearing or seeing him as much as possible.
First, mass deportation is impossible. He wants the headline, not the reality.
Are they making fun of Conclave? I can't tell, but I hope not because it is a fucking brilliant film. I wouldn't have predicted that I would be riveted by a movie about choosing a new pope, but I was.
Stop misquoting support for THEIR insurance as support for the private. People overwhelmingly support more coverage.
I tried to compare Obamacare to my private insurance. I was not allowed to even look at what was available. How do you expect us to be on board when it isn’t transparent? I might have liked it better. I just couldn’t take the risk to cancel my insurance and then hope I could find something equal or better online.
I attended a ceremony on Veterans' Day where the incoming GOP representative lauded 9/11 as an event that unified the Nation. There was no mention of J6.
Le nez is pronounced “nay.” I hope I’m at least the tenth person commenting on this.
Noooooo I’m so sad you won’t be doing these anymore. I started to like the weekday shows more than the Saturday ones because I love hearing from the girls (especially Halle)!
Sweet conversation, as always☮️💜✨💕
Slow start, but Halle carried the show on her shoulders until John got up to speed with the heartfelt speech. Really appreciated the inside baseball on the healthcare fight.
Eat the rich
Do you think Ariana is doing someone on, or from the Tonight Show? She’s on there more than most.
Wasn't leaded gasoline removed in like the 70s?
Per Google, The final phase- out of leaded gasoline for on-road vehicles occurred in 1996. Leaded fuel can still be used in specific applications like aircraft, racing cars, and farm equipment.
If Trump will allow Kristen Welker to interview him more than once, you can assume she is going to hold water and not confront him at all. They know he will be able to talk himself out of any question and get no pushback.
He leaves an out and doesnt care about law because... HE'S A BUSINESS MAB 🤗 Not a leader
Empathy is either naturally in you, or not
I didn't hear Trump say chlorine I heard him say 'flourine' which is a highly toxic gas. Much better to make fun of.
You know whom I'm willing to bet wasn't a US citizen when their child was born?
Kash Patel's parents.
Thought you were going for Melania Trump, naturalized July 28, 2006.
Barron Trump was born March 20, 2006.
Barron's dad is a US citizen (oh, well), but Barron might be considered an anchor baby to his mother.
In TX, red states, kids, families don't qualify for medicaid and can't afford ins for their kids because it's affordable for the employee but not their kids
Is this the real life Bohemian Rhapsody? Mama Mia! Also nice 7 minute rant!
can the girls sit at the table
Oh sweet summer child 😂
"Nez" ("nose" in French) doesnt' have a complicated pronunciation. It is pronounced pretty much exactly the same as the English word "Nay", but is "clipped" shorter at its end than the long "A"- sound in English, such that it doesn't end in a "glide" (or sustained "eee" sound), such as we can hear rather clearly, for example, at the end of the words "day" or "today",
To me, it sounds a lot like the way my adult offspring say "Meh"
Perfect Strangers theme ftw!
Can’t change the 14th Amendment.
God, Jon. I'm too fragile for truth tonight
