You are so completely right about fitting. Nothing is more frustrating than spending precious time on enthusiastically sewing a garment you can’t wear at the end.
Mimi be glad you are not in LA now the fires are out of control! My cousin has to evacuate. Love your channel and I used to sew my Mom was a seamstress. I feel like I have to start over I'm in my 60s and want to get better quality clothes that FIT properly.
@ I’m 71 and I feel the same way. My mom taught me how to sew, but she didn’t pre-wash her fabric. I wonder if most sewist in the 40s prewashed their fabric before sewing.
Miss Mimi G - I have been following you for quite a few years now and it is so cool to know about all your new roles and sewing adventures. I Still love your sewing rooms when you had it in your basement! I loved that you talked about prewashing fabric and fit. I have been in the intimates industry for 25 years this year and developing bras for plus size women is so difficult and extremely crucial and it is very hard to do on your own. But I know if you want to figure it out people can. Fitting apparel is difficult when you got curves and I am also glad you discussed measuring yourself , as we all fluctuate in weight. Thank you for all the knowledge you share. Its amazing and i wish you so much success!
Your plans are all amazing you know what suits you and are lucky you have a husband who’s is interested in dressmaking I have watched some of his sew a longs he explains everything so clearly can’t wait to see your makes take care
I’m excited about M8556 & M8558 those are my top 2 I have to purchase and make. I’m so happy for you girl. I have been watching you from the beginning, omg. I drafted and made your pencil skirt with the pockets and button on the side, I also did the fish tail skirt as well, and so much more. Yes I was buying every look book you put out( can u bring that back? I loved your look books). Yes iI was buying every pattern from every look book outfit that you featured, that I liked. You got me into sewing. Thank you for teaching us how to buy it, make it, mix it and ROCK IT!!!!!! Continue to increase honey. You deserve it it all. 😍🥰🥰 ❤ 🌹 🌹
Thanks Mimi for sharing your plans. I need to get motivated to make some plan I lost my sewjo and I need to get back into it. I love the leopard print and linen. Have a blessed day 🥰
I’m looking forward to seeing the upcoming projects. Yes Mimi with leopard print denim. I just got a leopard print crepe. Enjoying the videos. Keep them coming! 💜
I tell people this all the time, sewing is one skill and fitting is another skill,,,,but when you able to marry the both?? Absolute heaven! Love your planned makes!! ( I love the skirt pattern!!)
Yay!! finally, the 70's style again!! The best ever...sadly, I'm too old to rock this one, lol! My granddaughters, however, would look great in that 1st one top/skirt.
I’ve been watching your videos for years now and every time I watch them it makes me want to quit my job and sew for the rest of my life. I am a moderately good sewer, but I would still quit my job.😃🥰
Love love this video!!! Thanks Mimi…..I had a few lol moments but more importantly you continue to inspire me to continue sewing even though I am in recovery from my fourth shoulder op. 2025 is stacking up to be a good sewing year.
Thank you for making that point about draping. I just made a holiday dress out of brocade, forgetting that the original pattern called for linen. When I tell you I had the worst time getting one of the shoulders to behave.. And the buttons to lie properly on the bodice of the dress... Lesson learned.
Can't wait to get these patterns. Love your fabrics. Thank you for all the tips. I teach sewing at my Library and the first thing I say is get your measurements then, it's wash your fabrics. Lol ! I felt like you were giving me a one on one tutorial! Love you❣️
Thanks for sharing the patterns and your fitting tips, 'cause I'm not good at that.......maybe that's why I make a lot of bags 🤔......looking to sewing more tho...... have a good one
You can soften any fabric with using regular coke instead of soap in the washing machine. It won’t be sticky or stained. I will soften it. I would pour it directly into the tub
So Mimi, do you do a mock-up before you sew? I'm a member of your sewing academy, but I've been so busy that I've not been on it for a while now. But I really want to learn how to get the pattern to fit my body. So I'm wondering, do you do mock-up?
I do! If I have never made the pattern before and it looks like it's fiddly to fit because of many details, seam lines etc. I will do a test muslin first.
13:10 Prewash: Check. I always prewash clothes that are not dry clean. Always prewash at least at the level you are going to actually wash them later. I normally hand wash and line dry. But, for my precut fabric, I machine wash and line dry before I start cutting.
Hi Mimi, will cut the leopard print denim before you wash it…I was just thinking that all 6 yards is going to be super heavy in the washing mashing if you didn’t cut it per pattern yardage.
I’m wondering if you first make the pattern in muslin to get the fit right. I have never made a muslin but I adjust patterns by pinning the parts together & trying on the paper pattern before cutting the fabric
It depends. I do if its something like a blazer, always on pants, fitted woven garments, things with a lot of details or seemliness that make it tricky to fit.
So excited to see the finished garments! I'm amazed at how quickly you get them done! Any idea where I can find the Denim skirt pattern M8559? I've been looking for something just like it for ages. I've searched for it by the number, but all that comes up is a vintage wedding dress pattern. D:
Great video with very important information. I love your fabric picks. How can I get that jacket pattern? Are Sewit Academy patterns for sale for non students? I see so many of your makes that I adore.
I looked up McCall’s pattern 8553 and there was a craft pattern and a vintage one with that #, but not the one you showed. Can you please direct me to your 8553?
Would love to know what you mean by, “fit as you go”. I thought I had to fit the pattern prior to sewing and if it didn’t turn out, I have to alter the pattern again and sew it a second or third time to maybe get close to a good fit. I sew beautifully but can rarely get anything to fit. Could you please explain your process of “fit as you go”? Thank you!
Oh no love! I always fit as I go, meaning if I am doing a dress or top for example, I will sew the shoulders and side seams and try it on, take in anything I feel needs it or let it out, if needed, then I attach the bottom etc. I never sew a garment start to finish without trying it on in phases as I sew. There are adjustments you can make the pattern before, yes if you know what those are already but I tend to do most of the fitting as I sew.
Mimi, did you know that if you wash your denim in Coca Cola it will soften the denim. It must be REG CocaCola and nothing else. If you use a front loader only need 1 16 oz. If top loader, use 2 16 oz.bottles. It will not stain or hurt your machine. It only softens. No detergent just coke. Then prewash as normal.
I would love to see #8556 as a beautiful casual day dress! Sew stylish; it reminds me, somewhat, of dresses worn by TV moms in the 50s! Where can I purchase Sewing Academy jeans pattern?
Yes I agree, love that dress. Sew It Patterns are exclusive to students but you can join just for the monthly patterns, you dont have to take all the courses to get to them.
Wish you would produce a pants pattern that is for those of us who have a little bigger behind...I buy your Simplicity inspired pants patterns but they don't fit the way yours do in the pattern book photo.
