You're a really good teacher! I've tried to follow others on UA-cam but they take so long or get way off track...etc. THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge & valuable instruction! ❤️🎯🙌🏽‼️
Thank you so much for doing more of these beginner style videos. I have been so discouraged by sewing patterns that I gave up on sewing. This is giving me the confidence to get back into sewing.
Love this lesson. You are a good teacher. All your is appreciated. Thank you. Love you Mimi. I have been following you for years. Glad you are back. I missed you.
I am really thankful for finished garment measurements on the back of the patterns. It makes me a bit nervous though to sometimes go down 3 sizes (when the dress or top is very full) because I like fitted tops/ dresses on my curvy body with big breasts.Too much fabric on top makes me look bigger than I am. Very helpful tips for beginners and people further along in their sewing journey!
I'm curvy with small breast and I agree, especially with dresses. The top half of my body would be swimming in all the extra fabric. I'm also learning with knits I can still go down a size from the finished measurements to get a nice fitted snatch.
THANK you!!!!! i am enjoying your videos a lot here recently. i’ve not sewn garments in a while so refreshers have been great BUT the measurements info is fantastic. i’ve struggled w sizing forever and you made some good points. thank you for your time in creating great info!!
Thank you for the great video! I'd love to see one on grading between sizes, trousers not fitting (waist vs hips) is one of the main reasons I am learning to sew :)
Thank you for the videos. I would like to learn about how to enlarge sleeves. My biceps are larger than a lot of the patterns. I tried to make them larger but then the bodice arm hole gets messed up.
That would be a great one. I also have larger biceps and most ready madeblouses for me are too tight and a larger size us usually to large in the bust area.
Thank you so much for clarifying how you choose a size. I do wish that there was less design easein the patterns becuase sizing down 2 sizes from what the body measurement chart tells us is our size is very confusing for new sewists. It is also very frustrating for sewists who think they are the smallest size in the larger envelope, and for larger folks who appear to excluded but perhaps aren't.
As I’ve had a double mastectomy without reconstruction none of my clothes now fit I don’t know how to go forward and what would be a good pattern to start off with please help me I’m living in my pjs at the moment two weeks post op
This was a really helpful video, especially how to measure properly. I think my fitting issues have been following the body measurements rather than the finished ones...but then why provide a size based on the body measurements at all? Just curious?
Thank you for taking time to create these videos for us (new to the sewing game) it really helps to hear and see what is causing the fit NOT 2 FIT 😅 TGIF
I absolutely adore your pattern S8889. I have had to do so many adjustments to it, but one thing I did do is make a muslin first. Now I can make so many different looks with it. I added a zipper to one pair and the buttons to another, without the cuffs or side pockets.
This was very helpful Mimi!! I have sewn over the years on and off but I’m fairly new to working with patterns. Since purchasing patterns last year I never paid attention to the “finished garment ease” at the bottom just the bust, waist & hip measurements up top. Thank you for these great tips.
I completely agree that you should always make a muslin! I have made a bodice of similar fit by the same maker and required a different size. I would have been so sad if I had just used the pretty fabric and made the bodice on a size too small and not enough fabric left for the project. Little tip also from my sewing: I trace all my patterns so it is ok if the size is wrong for me.
Hi Mimi, thanks for these videos. I appreciate having the finished garment measurements on the pattern envelope however I’m wondering why it also doesn’t have the recommended amount of ease for the style of garment. A lot of knitting patterns have both and it’s very helpful.
Gracias por estos consejos. Muy buenos! La holgura o facilidad del Diseño es importante. Cuando un patron no lo trae indicado, lo que hago es medir directamente de las piezas del patron y así me hago una idea de cual talla cortar y coser.
Thank you for making/posting this video. It really is so helpful. I was very discouraged because my end result never fit properly. I have wasted so much money on fabric (and time). I am now motivated to start sewing again. If you need any more ideas for videos my suggestion would be A fitting series..how to fit pants, top etc( with pants on top of the list😉). Thank you for your time. Fitting Academy 😮
Wow! What a very useful video on choosing size and finish garment. QUESTION- Would you be able to talk about choosing size with a knit garment, since most of them has negative easy (what my mom is saying but I dont understand it) I would love to understand better and how to figure out a knit pattern. Thank you for taking the time on your very busy schedule for explaining all of the sewing tricks that you have.👏👏❣
Thank you Mimi, this was very helpful. One thing that I did learn in sewing was to measure your bust with your bra on (atleast your favorite or the one you'd wear on a regular/daily basis).some women tend to wear on a daily basis extremely padded bras so at the end of the day the measurements will need to be bigger. If they are taken in the natural, the breast are smaller as you said gravity takes over. If you cut at those measurements and your garment has front buttons, well then you'll end up with a pickaboo garment, not so flattering.
Thank you this is needed information. I appretiate you showing us on your own body, Hi five. However can you do an explination on patterns that dont have so much design ease..like most patterns. for example I wear a size 26 petit pants at Lane and Bryant but on the big 5 the finish garmet size mesurement for my hips is a size 38. this was nice because I could make a size 22 pattern in this dress but in Simplicity I have make the size 38 to fit my hips and grade I guess to fit my bust with is a 46? the issue for me as a fairly new sewist is What size to buy and why is it so vastly differnt from retail and evern garment to garment. You know we woman have a whole thing about "What size we are" gurl! I crochet and knit so I'm good on mesuring and making the size that fits the my mesurement at the time but sewing patterns in 2D to a garment that fits me is challenging enough with out all the size diffence from one pattern to the next in the same company. HELP a 61 year old plus size petit newbie out Sis!
Mimi, great video. I would love to see how you fit pants for yourself. Do you always use the same adjustments? Do you grade out from waist to hips on pants? I always find that I have to add just a little bit of length on the back side to cover the booty. I don’t have a whole lot of booty, but enough to know I need to adjust the pattern a bit. hehehe
love these tips! i know you recommended the fitting for plus size book for enlarging patterns. does any of the other books you recommended on your channel discuss gradually fading between two sizes? edit: i see you linked a pdf, thanks!! i am on day 2 of sew it academy and ordering books!
I am making your jeans S8655 and it calls for stretch demin. How much stretch is needed in the denim I attempted to make these pants earlier but they are not fitting me correctly
Thanks, Mimi, these lessons are so very helpful. But I have a question. I see why you moved into the size 39 1/2, because it gives you 2 1/2 inches of ease. But how do you know that 2 1/2 inches is sufficient? Maybe it's 3 inches you need. I guess my confusion is much ease is sufficient to where the garment matches the photo. What is too much or too little?
Hi Mimi. Thank you for sharing these important sewing tips and being realistic too. My goal is to sew - Mimi G - Simplicity S9463 - Style B. I always Iook forward to your videos.
The multisize patterns are very good, but the collections should overlap: eg. 6 to 14, then 14 to 32. I am right on the edge of Simplicity's collection of sizes so I don't have the benefit of the other sizes.
You're a really good teacher! I've tried to follow others on UA-cam but they take so long or get way off track...etc. THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge & valuable instruction! ❤️🎯🙌🏽‼️
Thank you so very much for posting so much lately!!! It really helps keep me motivated and I love learning!
Taking "Design Ease" into account when selecting a size is an idea new to me. Thank you, Mimi.
YES.....the tips are helping us! Thank you. How to GRADE between sizes would be fantastic.
Yes, a video on grading between sizes would be wonderful! 🙏🏻

I have the same bodice type. Do you do an FBA when you go down in size? I'm never quite sure when to do that.
I'm curvy with small breast and I agree, especially with dresses. The top half of my body would be swimming in all the extra fabric. I'm also learning with knits I can still go down a size from the finished measurements to get a nice fitted snatch.
Finished garment measurement tip is super helpful
Thank you for a very informative session. Looking forward to the grading between sizes and finished garment measurements and ease video.

I got 3 of your patterns. Omg I’m sooooo nervous but Im going to try. 😅
Mimi's patterns are pretty easy to follow and so cute. My 1st pattern I made without help came out so good.
Thank you Mimi G this was very helpful!

I would love for you to do a grading video. My stomach bigger than my belly and a smaller from hips.

I have narrow shoulders. My bust is 38. If I sew a 16 it’s way too big above the apex. I have large biceps too.

Hi MI MI I have a problem with measuring help please!!!
The ease is where I always make mistakes.
The multisize patterns are very good, but the collections should overlap: eg. 6 to 14, then 14 to 32.
I am right on the edge of Simplicity's collection of sizes so I don't have the benefit of the other sizes.
Note to self- always look at the finished garment measurement.

Very interesting and informative video..great tips ❤❤❤❤
