    pro tip for gathering thicker fabric in future - instead of basting (loose straight stitching) down the thing you want to gather, do a wide zigzag stitch over a piece of cord/embroidery floss/twine (making sure that you don't accidentally sew the twine down)!

      or what i usually do is set stitch length to the longest it can go and then i set my tension all the way up. machine will automatically gather it for you. just make sure you have a long thread at the beginning and end so you can adjust

    I recently Rit- dyed something black same way you did and it turned out light grey, so instead I tried again using the stovetop method and then using the colorstay dye fixative and now it’s solid black :) so I’d highly recommend
    Although my stitching stayed white too but I don’t mind it either hah

    Maybe interfacing, or using bias tape on a shredding hem would work? Giving structure to what's left, or creating a new more solid edge especially if you're putting lace over it anyway seem like the best options.

    If you want the shirt to end up black try using something with tannin to help fix the dye, it’s a great non-toxic mordant! Not sure if that was the intention with the salt bc a lot of people mistake it for a fixative but it’s definitely good to get an even color! Hope this helps!

    you can use thin iron on interfacing on shredding fabric and then darn over it :) its not perfect but its especially undetectable on lace and ive used it to restore loads of things (esp my friends flouncy thin festival pants :,) those things always rip and fray)

    So I think what might have happened with the dye is that it was made of two pigments, a green one and a purple one. Green and purple are opposites so when combined would make grey/black.
    The green washed away when you rinsed; the purple stayed and dyed the fabric…
    I’ve noticed when writing on my skin with black marker pen when I wash it the water turns blue/green but the stain left behind will be orangey red ..
    Could be what happened?

  • @Lucy-lz8fn
    @Lucy-lz8fn 6 місяців тому

    For ruffles on thicker fabric i like to use a piece of string and a zigzag stitch - place the string where you would like the ruffles, then sew over it with a really wide stitch without actually sewing the string (you just kind of frame it with the stitch, idk how to explain differently), then use the string to pull and create ruffles 😊

  • @MazHem
    @MazHem 7 місяців тому

    Green + Purple = grey (they're complimentary colours) so if you have dark shades of green + purple = black, so the green washing out was the dye not fixing. It's a good idea to boil it a bit and make sure that you keep it in there overnight if you didn't leave it in that long.
    Additionally the reason the stitches don't dye is because typically polyester thread is used for stitching rather than cotton, if you use a polyester dye you will be able to dye them, there's some polycotton dyes which may be useful for you, but generally you'll want to use cotton for the main fabric so it can be a bit expensive if you want it all one colour. (Or at least the cost of two dyes).
    Also generally 1kg of fabric is like about 1 pair of jeans or 4 t-shirts

    To fix the fraying of the lace, you might be able to utilize seam tape in that endeavor. I also just did a ton of clothing dying a week ago and used a warm water method because the fabric I was dying could not handle hot water. You just have to soak the item in regular warm water before you put it in the dye bath. I also kept the items in the dye bath for a very long time since I wasn't using hot water. I haven't laundered the items yet, but the colors look fantastic so far. 😊

    Wowow, this is your best thrift flip yet! Watching you dye that top was quite a doozy though, since I've done it a few times (would highly recommend getting one of those five gallon buckets from any hardware store if it's something you're gonna do regularly though, since it makes things real easy) and have a bottle of that same dye waiting in the wings. I really loved the chair and the bag, but this is a good reminder to tackle my pile (though I can't sew, so gonna finally try to get things tailored.)

    Major inspo for me tackling my alteration pile! Also for fraying fabric you could try 'fray stop' - it's a special fabric glue designed to reduce fraying and you just apply a strip of it to the raw edge. Then you can hem it. (Awesome for those without an overlocker like myself) ❤️

    Yaaaaaaaaaay for another tote bag diy!! It turned out so fun. I am once again tempted to try my hand in making one myself.
    Hand sanding with sheer willpower sounded way too familiar... I used to spend so much time doing just that with whatever cool details I decided to come up with in my woodwork at school :D
    I actually think you might have been better off without an electronic sander after all, there were so many curved surfaces and different details that you would have ended up having to buy lots of different sanding bits for the machine and still potentially ended up doing some by hand. Also I learned the hard way that hand sanding is sometimes better, because you have more control and will not accidentally make a dent in your perfect curved shape...
    For the larger straight surfaces on the other hand, instead of just holding the sanding paper in your hand, my tip would have been to attach the paper on a block of wood or something similar with a straight surface. That way you can just hold on to the block and the result should be decent.

    Great DIY’s!!! I love these types of videos. I think it shows people how to not give up on pieces too quickly. So thanks for putting this out there! Love your videos and style! It might help to put some antifray glue on the nightgown. It dries hard, so if you haven’t used it before, only use a little. I used this on some lace I was upcycling to prevent fraying after I cut it. It worked great and made it much sturdier to stitch through, but I didn’t like the feeling of a lot of it against my skin. Please ignore if you find a better solution 💜

    BURNING THE EDGE WITH A LIGHTER HELPS WITH FRAYING AS IT MELTE THE FABRIC TOGETHER

    More thoughts on fraying fabric: if the fraying is extensive, you may find it works/looks better to skip the fray stop and to patch from underneath instead. Find some fabric that is a similar weight or even lighter (such as netting). Patch to your original frayed fabric with stitches that are tiny on the right size (so they're less visible) and long on the wrong side (so you get through the patching faster). If the frayed part of the fabric is visible, you might do a satin stitch over it to neaten that up.

    I dye a lot & some things do not dye darker. You might be able to get the tunic darker with more dye (meaning using more at once) for saturation, but it may still be a dark gray.

    We have built-in storage next to our leaded glass sliding doors (I live in a 1930's style Dutch apartment and yes I'm obsessed with it lol). There's 4 built in shelving units/cupboards and I've dedicated 2 to my crafting/art supplies 😅 so uhhh yes it's totally fine to save and salvage usable materials!

    This is inspiring me to tackle my flip and to-be-altered pile! My birthday is December 8th so the idea of a patchwork bag is definitely intriguing too haha

    The patchwork tote is giving sensory quilt (like those quilts with little doodads to mess with, like yarn to braid or little scratchy bits and stuff). Super specific and weird, but I mean this as a compliment. Kathleen is a lucky lady!!
    I’m also obsessed with those pants that you took in!!!! So excited to see how you style them. Is it just me or would they maybe go well with your new purple tunic??

    Watching thrift flip videos is one of my faves, but I’m such a coward when it comes to me actually trying to diy something 😅 anyone else a former gifted kid who’s afraid to fail lol (actually not funny but yanno)
    I LOVE the first tee with the repainted flowers, the floral vest and the dark velvety pants!

    Soak your clothes in regular vinegar. Rinse. Wash as usual but put a cup of hydrogen peroxide in your wash water. Should take smells out. If there are pit stains pour hydrogen peroxide directly onto it let it sit for half he then wash.
