      That’s awesome! We checked off NJ Section 1 last week and are planning to do Section 2 in a couple of weeks. Maybe we’ll see you on the trail! 😄 Let us know how it goes for you. Best of luck and be safe!

      Hey thanks for commenting! Glad you enjoyed NJ. We love our state! So many of the thru-hikers we encountered were surprisingly impressed with NJ. We tend to get a bad rap sometimes.

      Yeah, definitely get out there and enjoy. We’ve been delayed getting started for a couple weeks now due to weather. Seems Jersey weather has been awesome during the week and crummy on the weekends. We have a friend that wants to join us but he works so the weekend is better for him. I think we’re just gonna have to go rain or shine now.

    Great video!! There is no parking weekends in section 5 at Crater Lake or on Blue Mt Rd where the AT crosses during the summer, we had found out the hard way. Taken from the DWG website: "Crater Lake, including Skyline Drive and the upper section of Blue Mountain Lakes Road, will re-open to vehicles daily until late-May when it will be closed to vehicles Friday evenings through Monday afternoons until mid-October. The road will remain closed to vehicles on federal holidays that fall on Mondays."

    Thanks for the video. I’m going to attempt the Jersey section of the AT, Sept 6-9th. Any thoughts on which direction SOBO/NOBO?

      Hi Mickey, we're glad you found our video helpful in planning your hike through NJ. We've been posting trail videos from each section to show what it's like out there. So far, we've uploaded from sections 1-4 and we just hiked Section 5 yesterday so stay tuned for that upload soon. SOBO has certainly worked out well for us. The northern half of the trail is definitely easier and gave us a chance to build up stamina before tackling the more challenging southern half. High Point south to Del Water Gap is all along the Kittatinny Mountain range and involves a lot of elevation changes and rocky trail. Whereas north of High Point there's more flat walking than there is elevation changes. There's' definitely ups and downs there but the majority is easy walking through fields, roadways and of course the boardwalk. If you're looking to hike it straight through, just plan it well. Camping is only allowed along the trail within Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area which encompasses all of Section 6 and the southern 10 miles of Section 5. The rest of the trail passes through state forests, parks and residential areas so camping is only allowed at the official AT shelters. There are no viable water sources in the Pochuck Mountain area except for a state-owned house that has a water spigot and it's currently out of service for repair (see the ATC website for updates). So, make sure to have enough water to get through that section. You might be tempted to pull from some of the streams there, but it's not recommended. You're never very far from civilization on the northern end and you'll cross over many well-traveled roads. The southern half can be very remote for long stretches and although there are many side trails that branch off the AT, those can be a few miles long before you reach a road. The only area we've had trouble with cell service has been from Crater Lake south to Millbrook Road (we have Verizon). I imagine the northern most area of Section 6 is probably spotty as well, but below that should be fine. Best of luck on your hike and be safe. Definitely let us know how it goes and if you find any information out there that would be helpful to others, please post it here.

    Could you recommend any footwear? Would bringing a tent for those willing to push through be a good option? Thanks

    • @krohikinghappens
      @krohikinghappens  Місяць тому +1

      @@onsturn Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. A sturdy pair of hiking boots for sure. Ro and I both have Merrell, but there are other good brands as well. We prefer the high-top style that provides more support to prevent rolling your ankle on rocky trail sections. A tent is a good idea if you spend the night on the trail. In NJ, camping is only allowed at the shelters except when you’re in Delaware Water Gap area there is the backpackers campsite. There is also camping at the Mohican Center but you need reservations and there is a fee. You can sleep in the shelters with a sleeping bag, but space is limited and you might have to share it with other hikers. The shelters are technically lean-to’s with an open side so you’re exposed to the elements. Remember to store your food in the bear boxes. Remember there’s no good water source through the Pochuck Mountain area so plan accordingly there. Good luck and happy hiking!

    Any plans for doing this in Pennsylvania?

    • @krohikinghappens
      @krohikinghappens  3 місяці тому

      Yes, Pennsylvania is down the road a bit yet though. I’ve started some of the research. Right now we’re working on completing our Connecticut hikes this summer. We’ve only been able to do one hike so far due to scheduling conflicts and weather delays. We were actually planning to be in Connecticut today in fact, but we canceled due to the storm forecasts. ☹️ When are you looking to hike Pennsylvania?

    • @Mosshikes
      @Mosshikes 3 місяці тому

      @krohikinghappens500 I've completed from Mason Dixon line to Port Clinton/Hamburg Reservoir. . About 70% done. The northeast section is a challenge. Not as many road crossings, and long rocky dry stretches. You can see how I did PA so far on my channel. @mosshikes.

      @@Mosshikes How far are you planning on going this hiking season? We are trying to just do one state a season. We started with NJ last year since we live here. CT this year and NY next year. With four in our group, it's a challenge just getting everyone to agree on a hiking date! Ro doesn't want to camp so we're planning it as day trips right now. I think we can do MD through CT that way. After that, I'm going to have to convince her to camp if we want to take on the larger states.
