Great tutorial, the best I've seen on Steps but this lesson should be considered used in all tunes at least in part. Excellent video!

Always appreciate your awesome content! Your tutorials are so logical and easily digestible. When I first was introduced to Giant Steps, I remember pounding out that left hand baseline over and over and then trying to rip through the 1-2-3-5 right hand pattern. My family was impressed... until an hour later. 😄

MAN I like you for explaining fingering because I think that's the main thing in understanding jazz piano. Many of us beginners don't know where to place our fingers or how to use our fingers when we learn tunes and improvisations. I think if you continue teaching fingering you'll be the best teacher of jazz on youtube, and that being said you are actually one of the best jazz piano teachers. Thanks.

I agree with Rick Morales Best ‘Giant Steps’ tutorial I’ve seen! So quick question... how do you resolve the “bad finger” while on stage? I tend to use some form of chromaticism until I catch a sweet note but if you have other suggestions feel free to share a couple ✊🏾🎹😷

Im a Syracuse NY guitarist.. I don’t play out much anymore.. but working on giant steps is always a daily practice for me. It took a while to get the chord movement for me on guitar. Reworked the voicing a bunch and finally settled on a chord melody with the top melody note in my voicing.. it’s always great to see you’re genius in some of these more difficult progressions. Transcribing the solo is my next feat.. only 8 left pages to go :)

Dang! I've been working on this tune since May and your vid has never come up in either a search or "the Feed". It's very cool that we independently came up with similar ideas: No. 6 the Continuous Scale, No. 11 the Continuous Pattern (I call this Position Playing). For No. 11, I chose the first pattern from Hanon since I already knew it in all 12, and I wanted to break away from the strictly Diatonic nature of Hanon. It also has a Hyper-Pentatonic aspect. I play this Pattern over these changes (Now) starting on the 5th, then the Root, and then the 3rd, staying in position and changing the notes to fit the chord, just like you, However during the Two-Five Ones, I play it Ascending Like Hanon to the B section and then play in that position till the 2-5-1's and then descend. It's not easy because wanky sounding notes come up so you have to make decisions. I found this simple idea to be the most remarkable Idea Generating Machine in all of Music. I did try out a lot of patterns from Hanon but found that new pattern Ideas would just come up whenever, that were more Modern, so I've had to start keeping a Notebook of ideas to work out. I Work on the left hand with chord tones but in ascending intervals like Root, Root to 3rd, Root down a 4th (Root-5), Root up a 5th, Root down a 6th (Root 3rd) then Root 7th, and I play these with just the Middle finger so I can Learn to Judge distances without looking at the Keys. I found that Idea No. 11 is the easiest and most fun for me. Here's a link to one of my humble efforts (the Title is Toung in Cheek so to speak): ua-cam.com/video/yNUf7jOivas/v-deo.html
You might dig it, no one else seems to be on the same page. Cheers JtC

Been trying to follow my heart for 15 years and become a jazz pianist. Ive got the heart, I’ve got the soul, I’ve got the rhythm, I’ve got the ear and the creativity.. unfortunately Ive also got the ADD, the brain freeze and the memory of a goldfish 😞. Its pretty depressing.. my soul needs to soar but is trapped behind a brain that wont function on the level .. Ive come to the conclusion that my cognitive function is too slow and my fingers are too fast and impatient.. I could sit here with Noah for weeks (which i have) and still not be able to play fluently in a freestyle form..Sure i can sit here and memorize note for note what he’s playing but every time i seem to totally forget all I learned in just a week or 2 away from the piano. I wish there was a masterclass on how to flow cognitively, how to focus well, be completely receptive when learning and retain that knowledge in long term storage. I guess i need a miracle.. How do you help the scarecrow find a brain? Is there a book? 😂

Hey! Believe it or not, I have had many students who have expressed to me very similar problems as what you are describing that you are facing. In 99% of cases, my experience was that the students were learning things in the wrong order or using methods that didn’t really solidify the material cognitively as you were describing. First of all I would highly recommend a book called Effortless Mastery, by Kenny Werner. He talks a lot about the mental patterns that stop us from achieving our full potential. I also do very much believe in the methodology in my Jazz Piano Secrets course which uses what I like to call the Neo Jazz Piano Method. It is similar in some ways to the method I described in this video, but in the course it is much more detailed and has clear weekly objectives. If you’re interested in learning more or talking about a more personal approach for you, there is a link in the description of this video that you can use to set up a free call with one of the wonderful people I work with.
Most importantly, continue to believe in yourself! So far, I have never encountered a student who couldn’t make incredible progress once they were set on the right path with the right guidance!

@@NoahKellman Thanks for your input Noah! I think what your saying about wrong methods or the order in which im learning things is definitely a factor.. Also when you say “believe in yourself”, you know that may be a big determining factor as well. How does one teach or learn that? all i can do is keep trying. Im going to check out effortless mastery now. I’ll start there and then move to your piano secrets course. Thanks for your gift brother

Why not study Dear John the contract on Giant Steps by Frederic Hubbard..to play over this after the Head..Added as a Special...it is very melodic and IT sounds Parkerian too as if Hubbard asked Coltrane to conform this beatiful Theme in a Parkerishisch Birdisch like style...also changes like Ebm7 Ab7 Bm7 E7 are Great as a sub over Bmaj7 D7 Gmaj7- Bb7 from Fm7 we could slip all dominante and play Gm7 for Ebmaj7 and Am7 - Bm7 instead of Ii V I in Gmaj...etc...

Super thoughtful content but what doesnt make sense is why it doesnt show in your intro of your video. Your playing sounded robotic and not melodic. No rolls, triplets, etc. just trying to play within the scale and hit the “right” notes

Sometimes you have to call those notes as people can understand. Db, or Gb on a loud set being called out are tough to hear unless you're good at lip reading. So simply F# and C# easier for me to hear quickly. IT AINT WRONG!!!
