The first time I heard Giant Steps I was astonished, so I played it to my very young children on long car journeys so they would grow up to be hip, and possibly also hep, but certainly cats of some kind. After learning to read, the smallest child was equally astonished to learn that this song was performed by John Coltrane, and not Jungle Train as he had previously believed. Anyway, nice work
This is a great story I want this experience for my children
lol that's adorable 😄
i'd still prefer Jungle Train. Reality is often disappointing
thanks for your comment ! are you a musician by chance?
jungle train made me giggle
Your bassist is insane. This whole band is insane. I love this music, don't ever stop!
kinda look like andrew tate though
@@lucastamenov9615 don't offend this great bass player like that
@@antonchigurh2514
Seriously. Those are fighting words. NEVER insult someone else like that. 🤦♂️
He's really giving that bass an intense workout!
When the world is running down and things look kinda bleak, the New Jazz Underground picks it all back up and gives the world much hope. I love you all and thank you for carrying on the tradition. Jazz is in good hands, y'all. It sure is.
In September 1982, Coltrane was officially canonized as a saint by the AOC. [NPR] 3:33
It better be in good hands, we're gonna lose Wayne Shorter soon :(
PS love the drum sound
"When the world is running down... You make the best of what's still around!"

These guys are brilliant!
(Me)
Sounds like a Vice article
2:20 is my favorite part of the recording and the essence of jazz. Abdias hits a "wrong" note (it sounded fine but didn't technically fit the chord) and Eric within seconds voices the note in the next chord to make it seem correct. Just incredible playing.
A lot of critics just hear something different so they figure it can't be very good Pepper Adams🎷
ive seen stuff like that. incredible. truly
For a second I was wondering why you were mentioning a knock-off shoe brand 😭😭
Yeah u right this isn’t music… this shit is art man, you guys make real masterpieces

Incredible work! This is one of those tunes where every instrument plays an extremely vital role. If you took just one away it would sound completely off.
here before all the "licc" comments show up. burning!
we're inevitable
¡presente!!!
Love the part where TJ is all ‘babidibabidibabidi’, and Abdi is killing it with those lines. Seabass holding it down, and you know it’s for real when he gets loosey goosey. Eric is great spreading butter on hot biscuits and claw-hammering out core chords and melodies
Did ChatGPT write that comment? 😅

@rubbr I dunno, claw hammer is a style of playing the banjo

Please add this pianist to your group. He's too good to leave out. Never seen someone so in touch with Monk's rhythm feel!
what do you mean monks rhythm feel?
@@colejohnsondrums monk has a very distinct rhythmic feel on the piano and elew captures the Spirit of it well.
"this pianist"... the ignorance and the disrespect man. Eric Lewis aka ELEW, this guy is one of the top piano players in the world.
@Lluc's Things
Respect was already demonstrated in the substance of the comment, in case your head was too far up your snob ass to notice.
@@drllucget out of your own ass. Instead of heaping praise on a known name he instead voiced genuine appreciation naturally without knowing his identity. There’s nothing more pure then that and that speaks far more respect then your pretentious sorry ass ever will.
This is impressive beyond belief which really puts in to context how far ahead Coltrane was and how his speed and phrasing would still put him on the mt Rushmore of jazz if he was coming up in todays scene
What a *glorious* version! I thought there'd be no topping the piano lead-in, but it only heated up from there! BTW, my son sent me this link. Giant Steps on my Dad's record player is a signal childhood memory of mine. This stuff runs through our very veins, and folks like you keep it warm and fresh.
I'm a bass player, I play Jazz sometimes and Giant Steps was always the biggest step for me to surpass lol
the improvisation and rhythm are ridiculously difficult ...big ups to the big man in bass

Hallelujah this will be good!!! Can't wait such a solid group.
I thought i would never see Elew play traditional jazz again, when he decided to do his own things. Breaking out of typical jazz pianist style. You guys have great chemistry together. 🎉
These cats are moving up! I've been following from the start. It's great to see to the setup, but the talent is really what makes this group magic🎷
This should warm the hearts of every jazz head out there. Amazing musicianship from these young artists. Much respect to all of you for your talent and for keeping real music alive.
This is such beautiful playing all around, bravo! I play in a combo under Mark Sherman at the New York Jazz Workshop every Monday. A couple of weeks ago there was a group in there right before us, and it turns out it was you! Now I wish I had gotten there earlier to listen through the door for a while! Count me as your newest fan!!!
5:24-5:35 got me screeching omg that little transition solo is so satisfying
This is amazing. I honestly hate giant steps lol but this is a great version worth listening to. Love your guys’ stuff great playing.
Not the random youtube video of a guy doing Giant Steps in 13/8
Mucha fuerza y swing!Disfruto mucho su musica!La intro de piano es tremenda!Saludos desde Argentina!
love the drummer's expression. like dude's the most chillest guy in the world.
Great job guys, sounds incredible, Trane would be proud

A song played for me by my father for my whole life, this is the stuff I grew up on and I have always appreciated that. this song means the world to me, you guys did a great job covering it
That was one of the coolest piano solos I’ve ever heard over this song
You guys are so good man, I can listen to you for hours. Keep it up!
I love this.... there are actually some young men that are still interested in playing REAL MUSIC!! Keep it up young lions!!👋👋👋👋 Grew up listening to Peterson....MIles...Trane...Coleman...Evans....Stitt....Mitchell....Diz...Parker....and the list goes on! My dad influenced my music taste and cultivated in me a love and great appreciation for jazz. NICE WORK! Going your website NOW!
Great piano solo! I wish I could listen to Coltrane´s solo and yours in the same take
Just received your t-shirt, looks so good ! Gonna rep you in Montreal until you come and play here !
much love !!
Fire! Your pianist gets it -well, you all got it- that's just the BEST play of Steps I heard in a looooong time. Bravo.
Gigantyczne kroki, drodzy państwo
Best version I’ve heard. Seriously. Also, the title of the video conveys that you understand this piece completely.
After a long 12 hours shift, this take and a pizza just put me back on the track... Thanks for the great work and years of practice. much love
Love you guys. Tried to buy a shirt but kept getting an error message
sorry working on it right now.. seem to be a problem with our host squarespace
2:38-2:45 that line by the saxophone perfectly sums up his improvisation before and also logically indicates someone else is about to tear shit up. fucking amazing!
The only people who say giant steps isn’t music are ppl who can’t play dominant chords like trane 😂 also that drummer is so tippin 🔥🔥🔥
Funny that with all that great playing, I was thinking the whole time: "MAN, that stick definition on the ride is TASTY!" 👍
I was thinking how he got that snare drum sound 🤔🤔
I think part of it is that it's a really dry ride. It's got ring to it, but very little shimmer.

I love it so much. Do you guys tour? Ever come to Texas? Houston would love y'all.

This is my first time ever hearing y’all and gotdamn do y’all have something special going on. Keep that shit up, this was insane!
So easy, I could play it in my sleep. In fact I just did it last night. Had a dream where I was playing Giant Steps on a trombone. Now that I think about it, I couldn’t even get the chord changes then…
Shirt ordered, but I'm not washing it until y'all hit New Orleans. It's gonna be stank.

I like this version more than the original I think. Sax guy is playing it way more chill than john coltrane

So when you next ponder something, ask yourself “Does it swing?” If the answer is “no” then it means nothing.

Good lord! I thought the title was click bait. So glad I clicked anyway! The entire band is a 11/10!
I don't know why, but I straight up didn't like jazz before I heard this song. It unlocked something in my brain. I've listened almost exclusively to jazz for nearly 20 years now.
You dudes ALWAYS bring a smile to my face. Gratitude.
It's such a soothing, yet energizing piece, and you cats play it to virtuosic perfection!!

great Two Fisted Intro! After years of Bach and no luck, GS cracked That Nut for me and See the Same here. Far as I can see, you all in the Clouds, not Underground at all. cheers! All around!
I bought you guys plane tickets to Madrid. Abdias, call me back when you finish lunch.
For their names click> 'Show More' above.. For they all certainly deserve recognition. This is top flight stuff !!
If this was the first Coltrane piece I'd ever heard I would have been a fan.
In 1970 I jammed with some high school buddies and the guitarist was absolutely crazy about Coltrane but what I heard on the LP was cacophony. There was no melody that could be transcribed. In my view the chaos of the 60's was expressed through the music. I thought Coltrane couldn't touch Charlie Parker.
The Jazz age was 100 years ago and it still sounds fresh and vital.
You're right, the way you guys play it (just kidding, but since you had a clickbait title, I added a clickbait comment agreeing with you). Back when I was just learning to play, I could play along with John's entire solo. This is actually an incredibly easy tune, wrongfully feared.
You're right, that's not music. It does not sound like "Despacito" 🙃
Just kidding, I love Giant Steps and your version is great.
So much better than flashing gang symbols, waving guns, and showing off your money! Pick up an instrument young men and women. Focus on your craft instead of killing people😠🤦
Yall are fuckin unreal this was an insane cover; I mean even just covering Giant Steps is insane.
Thank you for saying it! Mathematic Jazz 😂 y’all killin the game 💯 🫡
Amazing. Hear the greats in his work. Trane. Rollins, and more in his own way. Giant Steps is a bxxxx to play. I never managed it.
Love all the Dear John quotes. Awesome playing all round, love you guys
The first 40 seconds of counterpoint and theory is BONKERS
Cats. Seems like Kenny Kirkland on piano. John Coltrane himself on saxophone. Drummer and bassist both solid.
You guys took a very challenging tune and made it sound very musical and approachable. This is not only deeply listenable and enjoyable but downright groovin. I really like the feeling. Nice job by the tenor player using approach notes and other things to smooth out the modal shifts. Just sounds relaxed and pleasant, not as jarring and chaotic as when folks often play this tune
great! keep at it ! pianist reminds me of lennie tristano ?...mixed with herbie hancock and bill evans
