      @@lillabjornstationery I failed 😩
Seriously though - your point about finishing your stickers and then buying yourself new stickers as a reward was EXACTLY what I needed to hear. I’ve been trying to figure out how to gamify my planning and make it feel like the game aspects actually matter. I’ve decided to try out linking in-game (in-planner?) currency (experience, gold, whatever) to real life rewards that will “level up” my planning.
As you accused me, personally, of, I’ve got a ton of stuff already in my stash. I can unlock it through the game and I bet that will both encourage me to play through the game - which means using my planner - AND to use up the notebooks and stickers and whatever in my stash!

I think this is the way of most trends - start simple, as a very appealing way to solve an actual problem - gain momentum and popularity - aggressively start overselling and overmarketing (though this is certainly affected by influencers) - then the fan base realizes what's going on, gets fed up, and moves on to the next thing (or in some cases goes down back to the original solution if it was a good one)

Love this video. These are things that I realized very early in my planning journey. At first I fell down the rabbit hole of all of the stickers and clips. I quickly realized that not only is it something that I can’t keep up with financially but also physically. I’m just not that creative when it comes to spreads and at the end of the day I was experiencing planner paralysis, where I felt like I couldn’t plan at all because I couldn’t come up with a spread. Miss the whole intention of a planner. 🤦🏾‍♀️ Then I got a hobonichi cousin dupe on Amazon and was hooked. I literally just used it to plan my life. No stickers or washi, just colored pens and the book. Game changer. For 2024 I had my first real hobonichi hon a5 and for 2025 I’m going back to a dupe so that I can try the weeks layout and the a6. Can’t wait and I’m so much happier.

I agree that most people don’t need an expensive name brand planner to get by- unless you know it’s going to work for you. My special little brain benefited massively when I found Hobonichi. Sometimes your brain needs an expensive market item, and it is what it is, haha.

Greatly appreciate the fortification! I'm old now and I see my lifetime history of overdoing--all supplies for a hobby I never even started, etc. In terms of planners, I got all kinds of stickers at the beginning only to find out that I don't like the stickers sold to go with my particular planner. I just make all of my own sheets now for a Happy Planner. I designed them myself. I just like one strip of washi tape on each sheet and maybe a glossy sticker or two for a summary sheet for the month. That's all the variety I need. I definitely am a functional planner type of person.

This came at such a good timing. I’m trying out Hobonichi for next year since I just want to see what is the hype about and there is a cover that I really like. Then I got excited over all the extra covers until I saw the prices and reflected a bit. Why am I willing to buy those bulky covers now when I hated those cheap ring binder type planners with those fake leather thick covers back then? Why do I need a cover for the cover of the planner? Why do I need a pouch specific for the planner when I have multiple bags? So many similar questions which really brought me back to reality. Same with other fellow commenters, I’ve been trying to declutter (even if it means smacking stickers on every page) before I allow myself to buy again. I think a lot of us need to take a step back and really consider if what we’re buying is for display/showing off or if we actually want to use them.

GREAT VIDEO!!! I had a 2024 NO BUY LIST which included notebooks, art supplies and pencil boxes (cases). I will do this annually from now on. I noticed half way though the year that I never used or reached in to my back stock of notebooks at all!
I took about three unused notebooks, made quick belly bands for each saying 'never used, included the type of paper (blank, dotted etc), and free to a good home", I also took any old stickers I had and put them in to little packages (just folded paper or small envelope) and labeled them "Free Stickers" ... dropped them off at one of the free libraries in my city. The first time I did this I also let a note asking if anyone found it helpful or if anyone would be interested in me putting more items like this in the library. I did not expect an answer to be honest BUT, I GOT A FEW! Every one being for it. I spread my donations around to other boxes so not just one area was getting populated with my "problem".

    A good video
When I first joined the planner community I was really tempted to go all out and buy things I knew deep down I wouldn’t use
I made a promise to myself to buy things I know for sure I’m going to use, every time I get the urge to buy something I put it in my shopping cart and leave it for 10 days if I still want it after that and have a use for it I’ll buy it
My biggest struggle is washi tape
And for the planners I found when you limit yourself to 1 or 2 planners you get to enjoy them to the fullest( I wanted multiple weeks for this year but settled on one only and I feel like I’m using it and enjoying it to the max since I’m not spreading myself too thin into multiple planners)

This year I’ve been on a low spend for planner materials so I could use them up. I still allow my self to buy things but mostly I’m using what I have and it’s been so great to use the items I’ve had for years. The reality is stickers and washi tape along with markers have a shelf life and if you don’t use them you won’t get the value of what you payed for them. I think I’m guilty of all of these btw. The other items I might add are: decorative paper clips, fountain pen ink (really goes with your pens), and washi tape (I remember you mentioning stickers but I’m not sure you said washi tape I was doing chores at the same time) the reality is that stickers and washi tape have a shelf life and if you don’t use them they can loose there adhesives or fad (I have some white stickers that are now yellowing) or in the case of washi tape especially get to sticky you can’t get it off the roll. I cycle out colors seasonally, and I do not need to purchase any pens for the next 5 years. I destashed my overstock with friends which was great. “You do not need another notebook.”
*Nods his head in agreement, as his armoire drawer is stuffed with half-used A5 notebooks, and duplicate Midori MD notebooks*
In all honesty, this advice is extremely helpful. Once you find a system of journal layout and visual cues, buy only the stuff that is necessary to achieve that goal. I personally like color coding things, so I’ll use a magenta Tombow brush marker to divide up new days in my daily thoughts notebook, and I use a Pentel sign pen and an Energel to color code my workout sessions in purple. In terms of whether you want a premade planner, or a blank planner that you map out the days yourself, it comes down to whether the cost is worth the convenience of having pages already laid out and structured. I want to commit to using my 2025 planner for the entire year and I already experimented with which layouts I liked best, so getting a premade planner was worth it for me.

Guilty as charged on some of these…especially the pens. My recommendation would be to buy 1 of a type of pen to see if you actually like it (as opposed to everyone on YT saying it’s the “best pen EVAHHH”) and buying the whole set of Uni One’s only to find that you hate them and never use them. Also, no one needs a 3x5 nylon bag for $170. A lot of areas also have meet ups at coffee shops or libraries where people swap craft items like journaling things, yarn, etc. That can be a great place to de-stash and find some fun things that aren’t just sitting around gathering dust. I have a young niece who loves stationery as much as I do, and so she is gifted a lot of things when I realize (like the Uni One’s) that I don’t want them and am not going to use them. You can also donate to a school, a hospital, nursing home, etc, any extra things that you aren’t going to ever use. Or sell them on Mercari (people apparently will pay huge amounts of money for trendy items like Coffee Monsterz Co, etc…I also saw some price gouging of Hobonichi covers on eBay, no surprise there. But, people also find bargains, or you could make some cash back!)

Brilliant video! I write, guilty as charged, of buying new Hobonichi products from the new release. I love them but I don’t *NEED* them.
Also stickers: you gave me guilt by showing your sticker folder as I have multiple folders, both A5 and A6ish full of stickers, countless collections of sticker books from particular companies and artists. If stickers were accepted as currency I’d be insanely rich!
Can’t argue with anything else you said. I enjoy (and keep) many of the expensive purchases but they’re not all necessary.
Finally, you didn’t mention selling things like notebook covers if you have far too many. There are lots of buy and sell Facebook groups for planners journal covers etc, depending on your location, where you can both declutter and get some money back in the bank,by selling leather covers, Hobonichi covers and so on that are still in good condition. I decided when I turned 60 that I would revert back to paper planning, And enjoy it. But I had to do a certain amount of experimentation, in addition to listening to countless videos on layouts and sizes, and the pros and cons of different kinds of bindings.
Who knew, then, that if I used my Levenger punch to make paper for a happy planner worklife divider set that my pages would stick out past the dividers??? (I’m sure someone dead, but they didn’t drive the point home firmly enough, apparently!)
And who knew that just because everyone loves the dot grid and graph paper grid that I would hate them?
Who knew that I would hate the vertical layout?
Who knew that I needed to carry an HP mini size in most of my purses, and that the juniors/half letter size is the biggest thing that I can carry in my biggest purse?
Who knew that setting one disc bound binder on top of a leather one could leave indentation marks?
Just saying, sometimes you only learn by spending money and doing the thing.
But I did think about a few practical things at the beginning. That plastic stickers don’t have any place in a compost pile. No one had to tell me that. No one had to tell me how outrageous the refill products were, which inspired me to go down the rabbit hole of designing my own pages. (Thankful to planner, Annie, who’s simple tutorial on using OneNote to create planner pages gave me the tools to create what I think is the most beautiful minimal spreads I’ve ever seen! ) So I print only what I need. I often print on the back of paper that has been used on one side.
OneNote 2010 has its own charms, and it excels at printing out, just for the next action on my projects and agreements. AND it has its own happy planner, classic size setting that simplifies the printing process. I can either cut down my own paper or ask the local office supply company to do it with whatever weight of paper that I want. Same with HP mini, although I have to enter the measurements. There’s no limit to the cool stuff that I can bind in these disc binders.
    I don’t use stamps.
    I don’t use fancy clips.
    I don’t attach a dingle dangles.
I don’t buy artistic cards to stick in my planner
from fancy-schmancy planner companies, although I enjoy looking at their websites sometimes.
When I come across jumbo sized packaging with clear, acrylic plastic, I harvest it. My favorite creation was a classic sized divider that I put between a two month spread, so that I can turn to it quickly with the top tab that I created and I can read both sides of the two page spread.
I completely agree with you on the colored pen situation. I just happen to have a lot of colored pens left over from homeschooling. Colored markers. Colored pencils for art. All the things. Probably have enough to last me until I die with some left over. But that didn’t stop me from getting beautiful muted markers on Amazon because I don’t want those glaring primary and neon color staring at me from my planners.
I’m scrutinizing those colored markers and trying to find someone who can benefit from them now.
So I decided that the thing I love the most about this planning thing is a mix of practicality and aesthetics. So, there are certain planners. I carry with me to go with my outfit look good in my tote or my purse. They are “notebooks” mostly, because I am taking notes and learning things wherever I go.
Sometimes I put planner pages into whichever notebook I’m carrying, for my own convenience.
The leather ones and ones covered with fabric are my dressiest ones.
My plastic laminated covers can be used on the go. I’m not worried that they’re gonna take a little abuse inside of my purse.
A cream colored soft folio from Levenger with copper aluminum discs has gorgeous DIY dividers that I made using photographs in brown, Cream, black, beige. Striking. That sits on a desk I use for studying a lot. I can write in it as I study.
The gray linen Junior with smoky, dark gray aluminum discs goes with me to anything professional.
The rose gold leather junior from Tul with discs and sticky notes from Levenger’s modern collection Is really nice with a number of my outfits, and goes with me when I want to take notes somewhere.
The notes in different sizes get transferred to either a standard letter or a classic size planner. They have dividers I have labeled with different topics that I collect notes on. Periodically I go through to distill them.
The clearance aisle at JoAnn is a clear threat to my pocketbook, but there is a wealth of undated, planners and blank notebooks that I have sampled.
The fake leather beige classic cover from HP with silver aluminum rings looks tres chic and tres expensive. It goes with just about everything.
I have mood boards on my computer, showing what kind of dividers and artwork I would put in two different disc binders if I ever got them in other delicious colors. My enjoyment may begin and end with the mood board, it’s a favorite hobby. that one definitely saves on materials!

I definitely overspend. In generally I overspend spend when it comes to all things stationary. One other reason for the overspend is readying for when I am retired and no longer will have the income to purchase these things. What I know will be wasted is some of my pens and highlighters. I am sure some will dry out before I get to them. But all my covers and notebooks should last me years into retirement.

i appreciate this video so much! i was wondering, though, what do you think about pencil boards? i was thinking of getting one, but i'm not really sure if it's an absolute must

I need something to support my writing, thus I have a few pencil boards for my Hobonichis, but also using postcards (A6) which have entered my house, and sometimes random fun self-cut boards. So if you are not sure, test with whatever you have at home first. If they don't help with the writing experience, they would end up just as cute extras, or bookmarks :)

This is an awesome question! I started out in my Hobonichi without a pencil board and got by just fine with a postcard (as the other commenter mentioned). Eventually, I did start purchasing pencil boards, and I do use them every day! They really are no different than a piece of card stock, but if you would also appreciate having a ruler with you (some pencil boards do have ruler markings), then I say go for it! I think pencil boards are a pretty great accessory 😊 💖

@lillabjornco thanks! It's funny because right after that you say "you don't need more stickers" I laughed at the screen! I thought "YOU may not need more stickers, but I definitely need Gromit, Shaun and Timmy stickers STAT, planner-friend!"

It was purchased from ABIGALECrafts on Etsy. I can't find the link, so it's possible she doesn't sell this style anymore, but she has lots of great other ones! 😇❣

I come as a friend, I come as a friend! I don't know how to tiptoe around this, or if I Even need to, so I'm just going to ask point blank like if I were with my friends hanging out. I plan. I think. Dog- Vet, 12PM. Take mom to airport- 10AM. Credit Card Due- 28th of the Month.. Am I missing something with stickers and fancy pens and everything else other planners use? To me, it's a book where I write down things I have to do. I'm...confused I guess is the best phrase.. Is everyone else like some super-planner novelist and I'm just boring? LOL

Haha this comment made me chuckle! Hi friend 👋😊 There is no correct way to use a planner, and it sounds like you have a really good system right now! Some planners like to purchase accessories (washi, stickers, pens), to motivate them to plan, or just for aesthetic! I personally have more fun planning when I can decorate it with cute things 🥰

I love stickers, but I don’t know how anyone affords multiple sticker books, like RR or HP. They can run $30 a book!

Just wanted to share, as I kept eyeing up the hobonichis, but found a cheaper option instead! I got a tomoe river paper journal on Amazon for around £15 and I’ve really enjoyed it. Just incase anyone wants to try the paper or something, worth trying the cheaper option first!

What a brilliant idea! Paper is one of the main selling points of the Hobonichi, so trying it in advance is such a great idea, thanks for sharing 😄😄
