That's too funny haha! Yes, I have been a fan of theirs (and Coffee Monsterz Co) for a while 😇 Just like you, it totally depends on the mood I'm in, but my love for ducks is year-round 😆 YES! Midori and Marks Maste Scandinavian patterns + neutral/pastel colours is stunning 😍 That reminds me, I think you may have asked about the autumn Tombow colours from one of my other videos (if that wasn't you, oopsie) they are 837, 027, and N52! The journal paper far exceeded my expectations; like, better than Leuchtturm exceeded 😮 The glitter coating does not come off of the washi, it's actually like it's integrated into the washi tape itself instead of being an addition ☺

@@lillabjornco I think I did ask about the Tombow colors, lol, thank you!! That was very nice paper and it made the inks of all the pens look so rich and have such depth! Also, nearly no ghosting (and Leuchtturm is terrible with the ghosting…and if it were smooth and enjoyable to write on like Midori or TRP or other thinner papers, I wouldn’t mind the ghosting…but I’m not a fan of the feel of the pen to the paper. I’m curious what paper they use for their journals? That’s amazing that they can embed the glitter into it so it’s not sprinkling glitter everywhere…I imagine that is not cheap to do! I’ve heard a lot of people talk about the interesting texture and feel of their washis that are thick like that. I hadn’t seen their washi stickers before, and I really like them a LOT! The more subtle color and the matte texture is really appealing. (I do not need more stickers. I do not need more stickers. I do not need more stickers…ohhhmmmmmm. Okay, all is good. Aww, I love ducks, too. I’m a total sucker for any kind of cute bear, especially classic (i.e., not Disney) Pooh and pigs. Pigs are just cute! That sticker set would be great for January or February when the holidays are over…and it’s grey and cold and yucky outside, and all you want is some color!!!!

Ah yes the PaperTess B5 managers notebooks uses Cosmo Air Light paper instead of TRP, so it would be unaffected 😇

Unfortunately, these bad batches affect every Tomoe River Paper product (including Hobonichi, Sterling Ink, Aura Estelle, PaperTess Designs, etc.)

It was discontinued because of a switch in manufacturers. The original manufacturer, Tomoewaga, stopped production because of the cost of machinery upkeep (amongst other production challenged). Sanzen is the new manufacturer, and their paper was first released this year 2024. Although it was not as good as the old TRP, it was still resistant to bleed through and feathering. The newest release of TRP-S paper for 2025 has all of these new problems (feathering, bleed through). So, it sounds like you have a lovely batch of the Tomoewaga TRP! Keep it safe 😉

@@lillabjornco Thanks for the reply. That makes sense, cost of upkeep is a big factor. Very sad tho. I just got thr 2025 Hobonichi Techo and opened it to check, the pages feel like regular paper as opposed to the sort of 'onion skin' feel of the original TR. I will save my original TR for special calligraphy projects. I wish I had bought more at the time. Never expected all of this to happen :(

@@Coasterdude02149 'Onion skin' is such a creative an accurate way to put it! I know your impulse is to save the paper for something special, but don't forget to enjoy it! Anything you write is worthy of the good paper 😇💞 I'm hoping to test more inks to see which ones do okay with the new paper -- so far De Atramentis Document ink and Platinum Carbon ink seem to be doing okay!

Tomoe river paper was created with fountain pen users in mind, and has been the gold standard for years so it's disappointing this is no longer the case 😔They switched manufacturers from Tomoewaga to Sanzen due to the cost of machinery upkeep. However, this switch happened a while ago, and the new paper TRP-S was released at the start of 2024. The new paper TRP-S performed just fine in 2024 (what you'd expect from a manufacturer change), but for 2025 (same manufacturer), there is loads of bleed through and feathering. That's why people are so upset 😪

Yes, I totally agree with you! I am trying to be very mindful and careful about which companies and products I support. One thing that I can appreciate about Journalsay that I haven't seen elsewhere is they have an "Intellectual Property Rights" section on their website. So, if they violate your ip rights, you can submit a claim. I know they should never do it in the first place, but at least they are open to removing products... @@lillabjornco They may have that disclaimer/how to claim a right because they aren’t making the products, they’re buying them up from other sources so they may not be aware if they are selling copyrighted materials. I appreciate that! I have a friend who has a diamond painting UA-cam channel, and there was a big to do a few years ago because people weren’t aware that the images from the “Ali Express Companies” contained stolen art work. So there was a push to reduce that and explain how people can do reverse image searches, etc. Also, companies that made a quality product that the person liked, if they found stolen artwork, they would usually email the company (because they have a sponsorship agreement with them) asking them to remove that artwork, and they generally complied. This is a lot easier to do for a poster sized image of a familiar piece of artwork, or just a few different paintings you’re looking to buy. To be able to do that with all of the different washi, stickers, etc would be incredibly difficult (unless it was something overt like a ripoff of Eric’s Small Things or Coffee Monsterz that a lot of people are familiar with.) So, at least they’re trying! The thing that bugged me the most about Stationery Pal is that they pull you in with low prices, and you’ve got $50 or $60 worth of stuff, and then they hit you with $40 in shipping…and there is no amount you can buy that gets you free shipping. I even had a free shipping code from a UA-camr who had literally put out the video 3-4 days earlier and it wouldn’t recognize it. I went ahead and got it anyway to see what the quality was like…and it was a mix of the nice name brand stuff I got and a lot of Ali Express/Nameless Amazon stuff, for JetPens prices if you include the shipping. So, nope on them for me. (I know shipping is costly in US/Canada/EU/UK, but China’s government subsidizes all shipping out of the country for retailers, so you aren’t paying a fair rate for shipping…because it isn’t costing them anything.) Because of all of that, I decided to just support small businesses like JetPens and similar or independent local stores when I’m able. I hardly have a shortage of stickers and washi (but, I mean…it’s like shoes…you always need more, right? 😁)

@@mollymollie6048 Shipping is always such a pain!! I had no idea that shipping in China is subsidized, that just makes me more upset haha! I had the same thing happen -- huge StationeryPal cart, got hit with such high shipping that I didn't proceed with my order. I absolutely adore JetPens, but their shipping in pretty brutal too (although I know it's warranted). Additionally, I have been hit with customs every time I order from them 🥲 So now I do one order a year and suck it up haha! I am hoping to support small businesses exclusively, especially after hearing how some of these cheaper products from China contain BPA and other toxic things you don't want to be handling 😬 I'll use up what I have, but then hopefully purchase from smaller shops ☺☺

@@lillabjornco Fortunately for me, JetPens shipping is free over $35 which is very reasonable these days! Yeah, I’m doing a lot better with shopping and really looking at labels and going for quality items from reliable places as much as I’m able to (or able to have the information about.) Nothing is perfect, but some things can be more easily avoided than others. The subsidized shipping and paying dirt wages in China has created the ability for them to undersell products so much here. My mother always said “you get what you pay for” and often it’s true. So, as I’m able, I will pay for a better quality item that will last vs a cheap one. It also helps reduce the impulse shopping!! The toxic stuff is very scary (not that we don’t have our own pollution problems, but most of the scariest stuff they used to sell has been outlawed finally…not as well, imo, as the EU, but better than it was.) I’ve also heard people living out of the US having their JetPens and other stationery packages looked at by customs. One person discovered it was due to a few gel pen ink refills he added to his purchase (maybe they thought it was a strange liquid?) I know here prisoners get all of their mail photocopied and they are given the photocopied version of the letter because people were soaking the paper in drugs to smuggle them in to the prisoners. So maybe they look at the paper, too, idk? 🤷‍♀️

This has to be one of my favourite comments because YES! The whole reason why I'm struggling is because my 2025 Sanzen is bleeding awfully compared to my 2024 Sanzen (both Sanzen!!). I understand that changing manufacturers meant kissing the Tomoegawa paper goodbye, but there is no reason why the 2025 Sanzen paper should be this awful compared to last year's. Ugh 😆😆

@@prettyandsadiddy im right there with you, I was thrilled with my Sanzen replacement last year with Hobonichi, I was even regretting stocking up on the OG TR notebooks because I was so in love with the NEW Sanzen for the 2024 launches…. Not a single page in my 2024 Hobonichi has given me issues at all. And the FIRST page I try from the 2025 release of Sanzen TR paper products is even worse than the $2 packs of mead notebook leaf paper. (of course if anyone is following this thread along, you know I bought Sterling Ink this year rather than Hobo but it shouldnt matter)

I can’t speak to other companies but I know I’ve communicated with Sanzen thru my manufacturer about their paper. Especially their new 68gsm TRP which was an epic fail. I’ve also been looking into and will continue looking into alternative paper and continue to test Sanzen 52gsm paper as well to ensure the quality is good. I don’t want to sell an inferior product.

I totally understand that TRP-S can not be the same as TRP, I do however wish that the 2025 TRP-S was the same as the 2024 TRP-S. Considering they're both Sanzen, I don't see why it couldn't be. The feathering and bleed through from 2024 to 2025 has made the paper significantly harder to use (both Sanzen).

@@lillabjornco Hobonichi just released a statement addressing this issue (while at the same time not). To summarize, the paper is working as intended. Personally on the fence with their response. Quite a lot of drama from them this year.

Rhodia is probably my all time favorite paper, and it works wonderfully with fountain pens, gel pens, markers, etc. I believe Clairefontaine owns the Rhodia brand and is the producer of the paper. As far as other paper from Japanese manufacturers, I have a soft ring Kokuyo Campus and soft ring Kokuyo Soofa notebook, and both handle pens really well, and they are using Kokuyo Standard Campus Paper. I had heard that there may be problems with the Midori Hibino as well? I’m not sure, but it is absolutely lovely to hold and feel (I didn’t buy it so wasn’t able to do pen tests.)

@@lillabjornco I don’t have the Web Notebook from Rhodia, I have a ton of their notepads, both large and small that all use the regular Rhodia white paper with blue grid lines (They do make lined and dot grid, but I’m not sure if they do in every style.) I have the Rhodia goalbook which has cream (like you use the darkest MD cream correction tape with it) paper that is 90gsm Clairefontaine vs “regular” Rhodia notebooks that use “80 gsm superfine coated vellum.” Strangely, the lighter GSM notebook’s paper feels thicker (probably because of the coating.) The goalbook I have appears to be the same paper and cover. My paper test section showed no bleed through except with a Sharpie permanent pen (duh) and mild (much less than TRP) ghosting. Notably, Mildliners didn’t smear much of anything…definitely not Energels (I know we both like those.) It doesn’t dent as much. No issues with fountain pens (although I like F (Japanese) and EF (German) nibs and it’s all I have.) The cover is nice, the paper quality is Rhodia good, but it is cream if that bothers you. As far as structure, mine lays flat (A5) has a nice elastic holding the cover together, a pen loop you can use, and a sturdy cover that doesn’t need a cover on top of it (unless you wanted it to be pristine.) So, I would definitely highly recommend it in terms of paper quality with pens and just overall structural quality. (I think they have a planner, also…if you check their site.) I have bought a variety of notepads from them for many years and have never had a quality issue with any of their products. Fountain pens absolutely glide on it…ahhhhhh. All the pens glide so nicely (and it doesn’t take forever to dry, doesn’t feather, etc.)

@@lillabjornco You’re very welcome!! I just made sure to add that it is definitely cream because some people want white (especially for a Bujo.) I say go for it! They come in so many pretty colors, too! Mine is a sunny, warm yellow. Definitely show it in a video if you get it to see if you like it or not. Fortunately, they aren’t outrageously expensive. Oh, my goalbook is dot grid and I think the web notebook also comes in dot grid. Lol, I think my ears perk up whenever I hear someone say Energel…they are my favorite and it seems like so many people just get the Sarasa and don’t even try the Energel. Both are excellent, but I like the Energel over the Sarasa ink, and I like the Energel’s thicker diameter for holding and writing for a long time. I know some people make “Frankenpens” with Energel ink in Sarasa body’s or vice versa depending on what they prefer! And, I love my needle tip and I rarely see a Sarasa with a needle tip (maybe because I haven’t looked, but on the ones I do have, I looked and it was conical only.)

The paper is not cheap. As someone manufacturing planners and notebooks it’s a very expensive endeavor.
