This classic video - originally titled as "The Truth About Taxes" - is a 1940 campaign film for United States presidential candidate Wendell Willkie which argues that President Roosevelt’s New Deal policies waste money and weaken the nation. the film encourages more spending on national defense, discusses the national debt and deplores the hiring of many new government workers. Although not mentioned by name, it also warns against Roosevelt’s lust for power (a third presidential term). The film was produced by the Republican National Committee.
Wendell Willkie appears in the film at 9:55
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
Wendell Willkie:
Wendell Lewis Willkie (1892 - 1944) was an American lawyer and corporate executive, and the 1940 Republican nominee for President. The Republican Party tapped Willkie to run against President Franklin D. Roosevelt, even though Willkie was a former Democrat. To capitalize on strong isolationist sentiment in the country, Willkie`s principal campaign theme was opposition to U.S. involvement in World War 2. Another of his major campaign strategies was to stand against the New Deal, arguing that it was inefficient and wasteful. In the end, however, the president beat Willkie. On election day, FDR received 27 million votes to Willkie's 22 million, and in the Electoral College, Roosevelt buried Willkie 449 to 82. Roosevelt won an unprecedented third term, taking 38 of the 48 states.

New Deal:
The New Deal was a domestic program of the administration of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt between 1933 and 1939, which took action to bring about immediate economic relief as well as reforms in industry, agriculture, finance, waterpower, labour, and housing, vastly increasing the scope of the federal government’s activities. The term was taken from Roosevelt’s speech accepting the Democratic nomination for the presidency on July 2, 1932. Reacting to the ineffectiveness of the administration of President Herbert Hoover in meeting the consequences of the Great Depression, American voters the following November overwhelmingly voted in favour of the Democratic promise of a “new deal” for the “forgotten man.” Opposed to the traditional American political philosophy of laissez-faire, the New Deal generally embraced the concept of a government-regulated economy aimed at achieving a balance between conflicting economic interests.

Wonder what would people from the. Would think about us taxing people now
@@chickendinner9255 I'm pretty sure their foreheads would get slapped by their hands.....
Definitely!
The only problem is that the people never get to see where the money actually goes.
We see. It goes out of the country
Watching this in 2021! The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Same corrupted politicians.
The more we stay the same, continue to comply without pushback and questions asked, the more likely nothing changes on our behalf. Noncompliance is key. Knowledge about what you're fighting against is also key to the act of noncompliance.

It's almost as if there is a small group of people that want to keep the US in debt
Seems like we're not making any progress on decreasing bureaucracy and national debt
The failure to decrease the national debt might have something to do with four decades of slashing tax obligations while failing to properly fund the IRS.
Why woulf organized crime syndicates ("government") ever want to reduce their control over the lives & funds of their property ("citizens")?
There's 0 incentive for them to do anything besides bleed the masses dry while they fight among themselves about artificial culture war nonsense.
@@mactheknife7049Hear, hear! Every Republican Presidential administration since 1980, despite what they say, has greatly increased the nat'l deficit, through irresponsible borrowing & spending to make up for generous to massive tax cuts for the wealthy (while increasing taxes on the working poor, and cruelly slashing public assistance programs). And every Democratic administration has substantially decreased the deficit, in some cases leaving huge surpluses as well. Look it up, people. The data tells all.
You know how Republicans are always screaming "Tax & spend!" about the Democrats? A truthful motto woul be: 'Republicans borrow & spend, and Democrats clean up the mess they leave behind'.
What hasn't changed is Republican lies, nor the IQ of the people who keep on believing the lies over & over again. Neither Republican politicians nor their voters seem capable of learning the positive lessons of experience...

Only 3 months???? "Only" $40 billion national debt? Wow those were the days.
Add everything up from 1940 to today and add current taxes and you get almost $500 Billion in Federal taxes especially on gasoline alone.

Wow. Times never change. California.....where do the fuel taxes go....not to the roads..... Where do the Lottery shares go??? Not to the schools..... And don't get started on the Brown Doggle called the high speed train!!! And then they want money for a homeless problem. That money is there already there as well. Try looking at overpaid government workers pensions!! This video still hits home. BTW... Don't get started on rich not paying their fair share.... The top 5% pay 90% of the taxes.
Wow. It is never the rich who arent dodging or paying criminally low capital gains taxes. Cool story.
Golly gee, hightower!!! The rich sure do need that extra yacht and all that hoarded wealth to pass on to worthless heirs. It is a CRIME to see them suffer so from extortionate *taxes* (heresy to even mention the word)!!!! Golly, perhaps the top 5 percent should own 100% of all property. Perhaps there should be no democracy for the 95% rabble as a compensation for all these taxes. Our holy republicans will deliver!!! "God" bless em.
Golly!!!
Golly. Gee
Amazing: Franklin D. Roosevelt
If the US had to control debt and pay for road projects. gas tax would need to be raised to 0.45 per gallon. Also the US would have to abolish 0% interest rates and institute a 5% interest rate and a cap on interest rates for consumer home loans at 11% just to replenish the treasury department. The US would need to have a recharging tax on electric vehicles. Also would have to allow Oil and Gas drilling and with the higher gas tax less people would be driving and relying on using planes, trains and buses for long distance trips. Also some cuts to foreign aid would happen.
Better yet, just cut ALL of the foreign aid. We could afford to live here if we weren't spending billions overseas.
I think you mean that gas tax would need to be lowered to 0.45 per gallon.
