I'm going back to Azeroth for my next video!
You know, you'd think that prolonged exposure to something would always build up a form of a immunity to it - this wasn't the case with Der Riese. The constant, Silent Hill-esque sound effects as I was noclipping around the map really built up in my mind over the last few weeks, and it really started to creep me out towards the end.

Sound design is extremely underrated but crucial to immersion. The Killing Floor games have an entirely different level of horror with the music off. Or even back on Azeroth, see what a shallow experience it is playing with in-game sound disabled.

@@Troopertroll Tirisfal and Silverpine haunt me to this day. Walking 10 meters of the road as a newbie lvl 12 undead warlock, turning a corner around a pinetree and suddenly standing face to face with a 4 meter tall, lvl 22 elite Son of Arugal...
      Pants status: Shitted!
      Music and Sounddesign: Peak!

Already an interesting divergence and display that you can do variety and not just WoW stuff. Never gonna regret that sub. Thank you

Came for Verigans Fist, stayed for very chill analysis of gaming stories. Nice video. The audio was a little low, but still understandable.
    Gonna keep sticking around.

Never expected to be so pumped to learn about something I might not care about otherwise. I really enjoy your editing, performance, and authorial voice.

Wonderful video! I was never a CoD person, but I always love when map designers are so clearly invested in something and do a bunch of esoteric shit. Obscure esoteric shit is perhaps my favorite part of gaming, thanks to all of the weird old rumors that used to fly in the Classic WoW days about hidden secrets, some real some not. Ah, the days before data mining.

I remember my friends asking how I unlocked "Five" in the first Black Ops, because already by then nobody played fps campaigns anymore. I don't like endless wave game modes that you can't win, but that one had a very special harmony of environmental storytelling, gameplay, claustrophobia, and comedy.

I've been playing quite a bit of BO3 Zombies with friends recently, and I have to say, surviving for the sake of surviving doesn't entertain me like it used to back in the day. I suppose that's why it got increasingly story-heavy over time. Still great fun though - Der Riese really was special.

I just want to say, I found your first video last night and really enjoyed it. I've only played WoW sporadically over the years, and never for very long at any one time, but I enjoyed the format and your presentation of the story quite a lot and couldn't help but smile at all of the cheeky little references to other games, either in the visuals with the Halo inspired title cards, the short clip of CoD Zombies, or the music of Age of Mythology and Oblivion playing at one point. So, I subscribed.
And the very next day you put out a video on Der Riese and you open with a song from Marathon. Suffice to say, I don't regret my subscription one bit.

      @Veriganic  Рік тому +2

Glad you liked it! And I'm happy you picked up on the Halo title cards haha.
During the making of the video I went through a phase of listening to lots of Marathon - the official soundtrack, the various remakes and mod soundtracks, and the 'See You Starside' album (can definitely recommend it btw), and so I felt it was right to imprint some of that onto the video. :)

@@Veriganic Of course! I think the two games I easily spent the most of my adolescence playing were Halo Combat Evolved and Warcraft 3, so it really struck a chord with me.
Marathon's soundtrack is so iconic really. The first time I heard most of the tracks I figured they wouldn't stick with me, but now I hear just a few haunting notes and I can instantly pick it out. All the fan works are amazing too of course! I feel like the more niche a fanbase is, the higher quality the fan creations tend to be. Probably confirmation bias on my part though.
I can't wait for your next video though, man. Very much looking forward to it!

I remember back in my childhood, must have been around 2010 or 2011, I typed up an essay out of my own free will on my parents computer about the call of duty World at War zombie maps and all the lore I could find about them and what it all meant. I would have only been thirteen or fourteen at this point, maybe if I had a microphone I would have made a UA-cam video about it hahaha it would be really cool to look back on that essay now, but that is long gone cuz I don't believe it was backed up anywhere I don't even know if my parents knew about it

i think black ops 2 zombies with the destroyed earth and the tranzit crew had the best environmental storytelling. Especially the die rise tv messages.

A few tidbits on the conspiracy lore: on element 115, the "henge", and the tunnels.
I was impressed that the game makes mention of the Americans having a large stockpile of element 115 in Nevada. In recent years, according to one of the biggest "UFO whistleblowers" Dr. Greer, element 115 (ununpentium) was supposedly integral to salvaged anti-gravitic tech he worked on in Area 51. Ununpentium, atomic number 115, is a real element on the publicly available periodic table, but most may only know of it as one of the artificial elements synthesized via nuclear experiments, which very rapidly decays to lower elements. What Dr. Greer supposedly worked with was a stable, non-radioactive isotope incorporated into a device that could manipulate gravity simply by running an electrical current through it.
I don't know if element 115 has anything to do with teleportation and reanimation though, probably not. The makers of the game very likely simply mashed stuff together for fun, and a caricatured coherence flowed from it.
As for the "henge", I've been told that it was used as an anchor structure for testing the anti-gravity bell (can't have experimental tech like that flying away from you, or barging through more important buildings).
And the tunnels I am less certain of, but if they have *lots* of copper wire through them, then that *may* be an early, mini-CERN.
I briefly played on this map long ago, and had no idea of these references to real-world conspiracy lore. Thank you very much for this video, it looks like some game devs of earlier generations were privy to this stuff and, even if only for secretive fun, would convey it with nods, mentions, and perhaps more overt presentation down the road.
Whether these stories are real, however, is another question.
