One of two lifting bridges located within Poole, this lifting bridge located just away from the southern end of the High Street in between Poole's Quay and Poole's Port. In the mid-late 2010s, the bridge's approaches, walkways across it and protective equipment were fully-renewed, and now this lifting bridge has pedestrian gates along side the barriers and gates for the main road when previously only a pair of barriers covered both the footway and the road on each side. Despite all this however, the bridge structure itself has remained un-changed, and still looks very much the same as it did previously, albeit with wider footways for pedestrians.
This bridge is quite a lot different from the Twin-Sails Bridge nearby, and the two sections of the bridge take around two minutes to both fully raise and lower. The barriers and wigwags (road traffic lights) alerting vehicles of the bridge raising appear rather bespoke, and the warning lights themselves are located on thin back-boards. For each side, there are also two sets of alarms, as there is a rather odd-sounding alarm which sounds when the road barriers both lower and raise, and another alarm which works the same way for the operation of the pedestrian gates. As well as the barriers and pedestrian gates, the bridge is additionally protected each side by another pair of gates for the road.
The bridge is seen fully cycling in this video to allow boats and vessels both into and out of Upton Lake. The nearby Twin Sails Bridge (seen in the background at parts of the video) raised twice in half an hour to allow the Upton Lake-bound vessels to proceed further.
Thanks for watching!
Reminds me of the one in Great Yarmouth, I was walking up the coastline from Hopton and just got over the bridge before the bells rang. First time i've ever seen a bridge do that!
It's pretty cool tbh 👍👍
There is a Bascule type Bridge in Lowestoft (Oulton Broad) more or less the same design..
Great video
Thanks!
Like the sound of the scooter
Epic bridge
Built in the 1930s, reliable to this day.
Twin Sails Bridge built in 2000s, spent more time broken than has working.
My local bridge ,got caught by it today
Nice video
Thanks!
Awesome!😊
Thanks!
That scooter driver should be fined.
How annoying it is when you're filming and someone with a noisy motorbike turns up and leaves it idling the whole time!
Tell me about it!
Most are sensible to turn engines off, knowing that you'd be there for 10 minutes or more
😠 - a petrol head? Loves burning petrol/the sound of the engine, it is a requirement to turn off engines at level crossings/bridge type crossings like this as you would not know how long it would be closed for
Great video
Thanks!
