Nice summary Adam. What drive do you suggest for Time Machine backup in an audio studio? I avoid HDD due to noise and am seeking coolest / most reliable SSD over speed. USB 3.2 Gen 2 performance @ 900MB/s is fine. I will not edit on this SSD but may routinely copy larger amounts of data. Thanks for any insights you can offer.

Any suggestions for dumping from my old IMAC 2013 to a storage drive that I can pick and choose what I want to bring on board to my new 2024 IMAC? And any thoughts on "CLEANMYMAC X"? THANK YOU!

I’ve heard nothing but good things about clean my Mac x but never used it. I typically just clone my whole computer using a thunderbolt cable and the apple migration assistant when I get a new machine
Would appreciate your feedback ... I bought the Sandisk G40 for my new Mac Studio M2 Max 2TB SSD 98 GB RAM ... and it would not mount consistently ... no matter how many times I tried ... when connected it was great and fast ... but it would not mount often ... even after a restart ... correctly ejecting ... or from clear start up where the unit was connect ... and I did use multiple Thunderbolt 4 cables which do work, because I use them on other externals ... loved the build and speed, just could not get it to work regularly ... thank you for the video!!
That’s weird. I’ve used it with the stock cable and some others from sonnet with no issues. I’ll do some tests today while editing and use the sonnet longer cable
I’d say return and get a different one maybe you’ve got a faulty unit.
what's the difference between crucial x9 pro vs x9 pro for mac ? The only thing I've noticed on crucial's website is that the x9 pro for mac "Works with Apple FileVault volume encryption". But not sure how important that is.
how much faster or what types of performance will i get switching to a thunderbolt 3 ssd vs usb 3? will I even notice a difference?

@@adamtalkstech why doesn’t Crucial offer a thunderbolt option on its newest SSD for us Mac users ? Also I might buy the 7 or 9 and I noticed u said same speeds for the 9 due to the lack thunderbolt and will run same speeds on my new 2023 Mac Air . I noticed the 7 has an optional Mac ready version is that a better option since it’s already done vs the regular 7 with a fat32 file system ? Don’t u have to reformat the 7 to the iOS running system ?

I don’t know why crucial doesn’t have a thunderbolt drive. They should. I bet they will release a usb 4 one within 1 year

i have been watching reviews on youtube for the last 3 hours without definitive conclusion, until i ran into your video. wish i found it earlier. thank you. for the next video, i wish you make on "fastest dual thumb drives in the market". by dual i am referring to have regular USB on one side (for backward compatibility) and USB-C (thunderbolt 3/4 if there is such drive) on the other end. i am not sure i explained myself very good but i think you will manage to get the idea.

Hey is there any thunderbolt 40gbps hub or dock that offers more than 4 (four) "Thunderbolt 4" downstream ports along with others i.e. USB-A, USB-C, USB4, etc? Sorry if I sound like a newbie here. :)

Lacie pro is a little more expensive and typically out of stock. Those people are having issues with the Extreme Portable SSDs, not the Pro G40. completely different models and drives inside them.
I just "built" 4tb tb4 drive with Zike enclosure and Samsung 990 pro ssd. Price is way way cheaper than any of those ready built options out there. Speed is very good around 2800/3100. But man does it get warm. And by warm I mean burning hot after some time in Final Cut Pro. I bet the ssd is just loving being inside that aluminum oven... Maybe the most furious ssd wasn't the best option. That is why you spend money for ready built stuff.
Yeah the Pro G40 doesn't get burn your hand hot. They definitely did a great job with thermal management. What did that setup run you?

No. Only get top speeds with thunderbolt drives.
Can you also check Crucial X10 Pro as well please? It claims 2100 MB/S compared to Crucial X9 Pro that you mentioned?
Crucial X10 Pro has USB 3.2x2, and only ports on computers that support this standard, that work at 2100 MB/S. Mac doesn't support USB 3.2x2, so it has speed as Crucial x9pro

Great question that could be a lot more in depth than my knowledge.
It would have been preferable to have had a review that didn't concentrate solely on speed tests. There's more to choosing an SSD than picking the fastest! I find the Samsung T7 Shield to be very good for storing large RAW files from a DSLR and editing them in Lightroom Classic (with the catalogue on the internal Apple SSD). It doesn't get too hot even when importing files from the camera's SD card to the SSD.
What would you have liked me to discuss? T7 shield can definitely bog down under heavy load
@@adamtalkstech Reliability, life expectancy, durability, ease of use, drop resistance, water & dust proofing …. As I said using a high mega-pixel full-frame DSLR using LrC, with a large catalogue, I don’t find it “bogs down” even when importing large numbers of images to it or when performing complex edits. I don’t know about your video-editing use case; however, as a photographer the T7 serves my use-case well. If the SSD were significantly faster (and more expensive as a result) I don’t see I’d get any tangible benefit. Just saying X is faster than Y is no help whatsoever when in reality Y is fast enough. The decision which to buy needs more information than raw speed.
Thanks for the input. This was more of a general guide with a couple examples of some SSDS that I have used extensively and speed + the professional design of the G40 is ultimately why I continue to choose it as the daily driver and would buy it again and again over the cheaper ones. Photography speed needs are a lot lower than the others, but pretty much all of the modern SSDS have about the same drop resistance/water proofing and typically you just have to check each device's IP rating to determine that.
Whatever you buy just beware that all ssds are getting more expensive

Regardless if you are a "consumer" or "professional" you don't need Thunderbolt 4 drives for video editing. Any SSD delivering ~850mbps will be more than fast enough. RAM does the heaving lifting and your edit platform is not reading or writing data faster than what a USB-C 3.2 drive can deliver. Your editing chain is only as fast as the slowest link and for most editors that's dumping footage from an SD card (which is WAY slower than even a spinning HDD). Unless you plan to copy everything to another TB4 drive for long term archiving, you will never enjoy any benefit from an SSD that can read or write at ultra high speeds.
Sorry but I completely disagree with you. 850 will bog down on exporting and at times when running effects. I’ve done direct comparisons to the slower drives and then the faster ones and always notice better editing performance as well as faster exports. The computer is still referencing the original media off whatever drive it’s on, not the ram. And when generating thumbnails you need it to be able to reference that file as fast as possible.
@@adamtalkstech no exporting does not "bog down" because your computer is never exporting faster than a USB 3.2 SSD can handle. I edit 4K video using a USB-C 3.2 external SSD drive that gets R//W ~850mbps and everything is a smooth as butter.
ArtIsRight is one of the few tech guys on UA-cam who actually shows data on how fast the CPU/GPU is operating and what effect drive speed has on editing (spoiler alert, virtually none).

Looks like an informative video but I’m not going to argue with you any more here. I have the various speeds and types of drives and have done timed exports on both as well as just comparing different projects and testing the differences in how they are stored and perform. I just did a test recently comparing editing using one of the crucial and the pro g40 and the export time was cut in half on the pro g40.
