tavi921 as a volvo s60 owner...it doenst look like a 2011 car it looks like maybe a 2014 - 16. it was way ahead of time and extremely safe! now since the s90 came out the only thing that has changed is the interior and the front grill of the car making it more sharp...well worth the money!
You're a bit harsh here Mat. This car wasn't designed as a sports car, and it's not trying to be one. So it's not right to criticize it because it doesn't feel sporty. Volvos often have a really nice luxury feel to them, and they are known as one of the safest cars out there. The only thing that would stop me from buying one is that it can be hell for your average mechanic to get parts for them. That means you have to go right to the dealer, and that costs plenty.
i notice Mat tends to use BMW as a yardstick for handling and fun, Merc for low depreciation and brand value, and Audi for practicality and efficiency.
I'm in the market for a new car (replacing a BMW 3 series) and I'm intrigued by this car. The relative comfort of the drivers' seat always struck me as extremely underrated. Let's be honest, here in the States' we spend a lot of time just going in a straight line on an interstate, or, unfortunately, just sitting in traffic.
Or in any other country that has left-hand drive. Because your comment is not at all prejudiced and totally not said as an insult. Obviously, it's a compliment given to the intelligent people in America, as you've clearly stated in your very well thought out and completely logical comment.
this new s60 is very impressive. seems to be a massive improvement over the old one. although i can appreciate Volvo's emphasis on active safety features, i wish they would divert some more of that effort into enhancing the sporty character of the car. the s60 seems to have great potential. maybe when the R version comes out....? also, i think the guy who's doing the review is pretty darn hot.
everybody and their brother has a BMW in the U.S. I like the the fact that volvo is an unsung hero with a car that costs less and is just as fun to drive.
@upiluften I didn't say it was broken, I just said that the seats in a Volvo from 2003 that no one has heard of, is exactly the same as the ones in this car.
S60 T3(1.6L 150HP); OVER 100L/100km, S60 T4(1.6L 180HP), OVER 190L/100km S60 T5 (2.0L 204HP) ; OVER 298L/100km AND S60 T6 (2.9L 304HP) OVER 312L/100km IN FR/R FOG LAMP,NON FR /R LAMP
Arnison XXVI at least the suspension does crab and bounce along like the 'feature aka design flaw' on the Mercedes GLC. Terrible build quality. You actually have to sign a disclaimer gag order before you buy it 😂😂😂
It's weird that he said this car has numb steering. I've been reading reviews and I even own one and the steering is very sharp, far from numb, that's what everyone's been saying as well, that it has sharp steering
Damn, I own a 2011 Volvo S40, and always liked it since owning a 1993 850GLT. I have always wanted to own a C Class, but driving this S40 has made me reappreciate Volvo. If I had a ton of cash and needed two cars I would purchase a C Class and keep this S40, but must say that the S60 is seducing me a lot.
I´ve been driving both the BMW 3-series (and 5-series) and the Volvo S60, and I can say that the S60 is far better than both of them... I would pick the S60 over a BMW, Audi or a Mercedes
I wasn´t aware the S60 was the car Volvo compares to the 3 series and C Class. Just purchased a 2011 S40, and at the dealership I was surprised the S60 wasn´t the extremely huge sedan I thought it was. It has a very nice size, not a small car but not a landyacht either. Just now when I find the "perfect sedan", I learn that they are killing the S40 in favor of the V40. So we´ll have a V40 which compares to an A3, 1 series and such, and if I want to upgrade mine, I´ll have to go to an S60...
@chongb It really does, at least the BMW 3 series and the Audi A4. I drove all three cars before buying and for the price, safety and comfort I chose the S60.
Indeed, Japan, UK and Australians have it on the right but most of the world on the left. I always wondered if English people when walking on the side walk naturally pass on the left side oncoming pedestrians instead of the right. There's something "logical" about driving on the right side. Even international boat rules you have to give way by passing on the right side.
For some reason Volvo never has had big boots. I remember 740. big car, and yet the boot was smaller than the likes of audi 80 at the time. But this boot really is shockingly small, i might guess its something to do with Volvo safety features, like built in roll bar or smth.
Hello... Can you tell me How large or obstructive is the Transmission Tunnel at the back?? Does it reduce the leg room substantially for the Middle passenger?? or its ok not bad at all?
I can forgive the smaller trunk easily because it has a decent size and the car is very nice, sporty looking and its interior is superior to its rivals and theres very good engines
@mrdiamondback1 Sweden never owned it. It was a private corporation. Many parts and the cars themselves are still assembled in Sweden as well as other countries too. My car the Volvo 850 was actually assembled in my country Canada.
@Mancedon Built in the Belgium factory, no factory in Holland. And the one in China (that's still not built) is going to be for the Chinese market only.
...or try some years later a V40, which I won´t, since I just traded an A3 Sportback, nice car, but didn´t liked it after months. Small car, very nervous at high speeds, a very "nervous " ABS system, and couldn´t get over the fact it was a hatchback. More of a sedan guy. Just feel it is a pity someday I´ll have to upgrade to an S60. Don´t dislike the style, but I really enjoy how the S40 looks. Sigh.
I wonder if manual transmission cars also carry the pedestrian safety system. In the automatic car braking would be akin to the usual braking, but in the manual car, if the car decides to stop, I don´t think it would deactivate the clutch, so I don´t know if the car would stall...but maybe Volvo engineers have figured it out.
Of course s60 is more expensive, they are not in the same class so they should not be compared. Congratulations on your purchase, I hope you'll drive your Jetta in the best days friend.
Bor du i norrland? Inte kallt? Jämfört med var? Nordpolen? Klart som fan att det är kallt i Sverige jämfört med UK. Efterblivna kommentarer på ett jävla skämt. TRIGGERED?
There are actually 76 countries and territories that drive on the left. Around a third of worlds population lives in a country with hand traffic. That's quite a lot more then just 4.
Right, because Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Africa, Thailand doesn't exist or you've never heard of them or know about them and the lists goes on...way more than 4 countries.
@dunti21 I'm sure you are right. The hire car was a Vauxhall and didn't seem to have but didn't have for long. The interior of that Volvo looks amazing. By the way if they sack Clarkson, Mat should have his job!
I will be doing car reviews too! ^^ CarBuyer inspired me to do that................ I will post them soon! All the way from Malaysia! the first car: RenaultSport Clio!
this review is ridiculous. He said Volvo is not quite as desirable. FYM Volvo is one of the safest car on the world. They spend more money for safety things than design, and this is most important, than a stupid logo. And why is problem, not so sporty than stupid Audi? thats why are so many accident, people things they are Schumacher. We should drive safe, not sporty, and we should care about other people as well. This guy attitude is wrong very much. :-(
Another great review. Great looking car the inside looks beautiful. Only thing I don't like is the electronic handbrake. Drove hire car recently and couldn't get used to it but worst is trying to a hill start . I usually hold the car on the hand brake slighlty to set off. You can't do this on electronic as its either on or off -you role back. More & more cars are getting them & that's why people have taken to using their foot brake to blind you at the lights. Moan over - its still a great car!
Automatically brakes when sees pedestrian? I didn't think that worked on Volvos, or maybe that was just Top Gear's footage of it going into a lorry without slowing down a set-up
Or spanish, or french, or belgian, or italian, or german, or swedish, or arabian, or indian, or greek, or turkish, or rumanian, or swiss, or letonian... you get the point
the steering is very sharp but still feels a bit numb.. please, dont try to make downsides where there isnt, the Volvo is a perfect alternative to bmw or audi or merc. Audis are all the same design, bmws fail after 50km, mercs are to taxi.
This car will still look good and fresh for years to come.
tavi921 Vegtta is everywhere!
I think you're right. In my opinion, Volvo gets old slowly than Mercedes, BMW and even Audi.

Only the exterior. The interiors quite dated. Small screen with lack of touch.
i bought one for my family this summer, and it´s awesome! looks like a 2015 car
Such a wonderful drive, I just think of any excuse to get in my S60 and have a drive, it's so smooth and quick.
You're a bit harsh here Mat. This car wasn't designed as a sports car, and it's not trying to be one. So it's not right to criticize it because it doesn't feel sporty.

In Sweden it's the other way around, the parts are very easy to come by
Volve has been doing a great job with the styling of its new cars.
I drove the S60 T3 with a manual transmission the other day, I just love that car!!
my dad has this car and believe me, the seats are one of the most comfortable ever
i notice Mat tends to use BMW as a yardstick for handling and fun, Merc for low depreciation and brand value, and Audi for practicality and efficiency.
and jaguar for pure british nationalism 😊
I have just shit my britches.
Love this car in every single way!
Nice to see you here Matt. Back in the days hahaha. I'm about to buy this Volvo, the T4. It was a short but good review

Damn this new S60 looks so good. it beats audi A4, BMW 3 series, and Mercedez C class, Acura TL, in my opinion
I test drove a 328xi, G37X, and Audi A4, and I went with the new S60 R-Design. It is pretty awesome.
Or in any other country that has left-hand drive. Because your comment is not at all prejudiced and totally not said as an insult. Obviously, it's a compliment given to the intelligent people in America, as you've clearly stated in your very well thought out and completely logical comment.

what does he mean by it feels numb? little road feed back or just not much movement? even thug the said it was sharp?
@Mancedon Built in the Belgium factory, no factory in Holland. And the one in China (that's still not built) is going to be for the Chinese market only.
Completely agree. Volvo's are awesome
@732Anderson yes you can likely, taking Volvo home market drives on the right.
@athleticscoach2012 Doesn't it come with automatic hill hold? Cars nowadays with electronic handbrakes usually have that.

I have the Volvo c30 d2 R design for 2years now i'm Gonna buy s60 d3.
should i go for the new jetta or this volvo? any suggestions ?
Yes but. The most important information is missing, where is the S60 manufactured? Sweden, Holland or China?
Strange seeing Mat not so manic.
Corporate culture can do that to a person.
Any chance of the s60 getting an update soon?

@mrdiamondback1 Volvo recently got bought out by a Chinese company, Geely. Otherwise it was Swedish
Please review S40 too Matthew
@PHILLE564 They do now. They've dsigned the Volvo Concept You and the Volvo Concept Universe.
this guy should be at Top Gear
@rally240 The S40 is being discontinued :( I was also waiting to see the next generation!
