- The moment I have been waiting for for nearly two years of owning my ex racehorse, Ember 🥹 I am so proud of how far he has come, thank you to everyone for the continued support of our journey, it means a lot 💙

Lucy, I have an idea I hope you will try. Try not carrying the whip in any event. You aren't going to use it, right? and it's always bouncing where he can see it in the corner of his eye. Having been on the track, they always carry a whip and they always use it. He's a complicated horse and just a little thing like that could make a huge difference. Another thought, could you lengthen your stirrups for the dressage? You still have your stirrups quite short and that causes your heels to be in his sides most of the time. Try in competition with no whip and maybe, if possible, try the longer stirrups. I am guessing you may not want to lengthen your stirrups because you have beautiful long legs and you imagine if your legs hang down too long, it will make him look smaller. But he needs quiet lower legs in the dressage. These are just my observations watching you ride over the last year plus. You are an amazing rider and fearless! You've come so far with Ember, he's not throwing his head anymore and he's brave too, he doesn't often refuse a fence. Rather, he acts like he loves the jumping and can't wait to do it. Maybe at home, make some circles before continuing over the jump, that might help him to learn not to pull you to the jump. It's nice to have that lock on, I know, but you know he'd be better off to be less rushing at the fences. I admire you a great deal. Your positive attitude and your tenacity, especially. I love Justine too. I hope you don't mind my suggestions. I'm a 71 yr old past equestrienne. I rode for 40 years, started colts for 35 years for the public and rode in all disciplines and driving draft horse teams. At 52, a horse I was training did a very hard stop at a 3'6" fence, he'd never stopped before, I landed directly on the top of my head, and had tremendously severe injuries that stopped all my horse activities for life and I've been disabled for the last 19 years. But I still have all that I knew in my head and heart and I enjoy watching your ladies in the UK, like Meg, Tina, Em and of course, YOU!
He looks like a tough ride , you ride him so well and bravely!!and never complain!! I love how supportive Justine and Charlie are too ❤ it's very inspiring how you deal with Ember and are so motivated to make an eventer out of him best of luck going forward love following your channel 👏👏👏
From a horse who was unable to cope away from home to working in the dressage arena warming up and jumping the show jumping to let's stop hanging around let's go. He has come along way this season with plenty to come. Exciting times ahead
Imagine when he goes off with all four legs the "boing" sound. You are doing so well with him and his flicky feet!
He has come an exceptionally long way. Most important he is enjoying this new life and he definitely has ability and beautiful movement to keep progressing.
I remember seeing Embers advert; he was such a shut down, sad horse and it's genuinely lovely to see him so happy and relaxed in himself now. I feel like he really wants to please you and get it right he's just slightly over enthusiastic at the moment 🤣 but definitely a far cry from being led round the XC course last year! He is definitely showing that he IS capable. Keep working hard and being patient with him, you and Justine have worked wonders with him. And you are much braver than me taking him round the XC 🤣x
Putting things into perspective, you went from being led by a fence judge to no napping and completing . So who cares about the 40, just think where he’ll be this time next year!!

I love him so much! And I love the way you ride and handle hm. Congrats on completing your first BE! I'm always going on about how he shares so many qualities with my horse and he really does. We got several 40ish dressage scores at the beginning too (we had so much tension!), but eventually we did start doing really well, with a 22 being our very best. You will get there too. He has all the ability in the world and a lovely attitude. He's just green and, from what I can tell, has a bit of an anxiety issue. But you are always calm and supportive and from that, massive improvement will come! I'm also very familiar with time penalties resulting from arguments about speed. But that will improve too and I was mega impressed with the way you negotiated that combo on a curve; it was foot perfect. Love watching the partnership and I sincerely believe that there are great things in your future!

He looks like he wants to go sideways so he can see the jump out of his right eye and once he identifies a jump, he goes 'ah, ok, that's a jump thingy and Lucy wants me to jump it, ok, i can do this' . Then he straightens up and bombs over it. Well, most of them anyways. Very entertaining. You've done an amazing job with him. Good riding all around.

You're doing so well, plenty more to come. He's so lucky to have you. I work with baby racehorses and we can't control their destiny but I pray they can all find their own Lucy in the end.
He did well despite hiccups. He has come such a long way already.What a pocket rocket! He looks so much like his sire, the Aussie stallion Sepoy.
There's a lot to like when your fizzy horse is an absolute dope on the ground. He's so good whilst you get him ready and leaving him on lorry alone. Well ridden Lucy!
Please don't even begin to stress about Dressage. Don't worry about a pole down in SJ. Cross Country? It just excites your red-headed boy! You and Ember have really worked hard. Ember loves his job! His enthusiasm just bounces out - much like your bouncy canter! All he needs to do is relax. That's it. He is a lovely mover and a wonderful jumper. A little more experience and you will be amazed.

I think you’re being a bit hard on yourself. You’re doing a really good job staying calm. His technique is a bit scary, he’ll have a nice rhythm then he just absolutely fires himself at the jump. So the fact you just sit quiet and go with him is a testament to your riding ability 😅 Well done! Ex racers are tricky and it’s all to do with their brain, keep persevering!

You are doing so well - shrink 😂 he sucks back off the contact and drops the bit and that is just tension at home you could practice giving him the rein when he does that and push him forward - the more you hold the tenser he will get - you will get there the fact that he isn’t going off his trolley as an OTT is a huge advantage and he is looking absolutely lovely - well done 👍

My goodness, that cross country round looked hard! You must have been exhausted afterwards. I thought the previous competition that you won first place in, went much better. He wasn't so ramped up and he didn't hit any of the jumps. Those damn things are so unforgiving if they hit them. However, you got through this one, which is a major achievement so well done to you both. Justine is such a good friend/trainer to you and so supportive in everything you're really lucky to have her! I have been following you since before you acquired Ember, so I'm looking forward to seeing him grow and blossom and one day, sail over those BE 100 jumps like they weren't even there ❤❤❤

To an outsider, you look like a really high level rider schooling ember SJ. The change is actually insane. In all honesty when you first got him I thought you were crazy, but you’ve done such an amazing job with him he looks like a different horse. Keep going and you’re going to have an eventing legend!!

Such a good job and you ride him so well!!! He just comes back at you in the dressage (tension I guess) and doesn't cover the ground, lacking freedom of movement. But this will all come with time, it's your first BE80 with him, onwards and upwards!

Think you did great w/Ember esp on his especially w/the XC round in keeping him together to make the jumps (you had to be exhausted from doing this😉). And his dressage, imho, didn’t look bad to deserve a 40 score.

Are you sure this is the same horse named Ember you were riding last year? 😅😅 Y'all have come so far!! I confess I was laughing at him on the cross country, I've not seen a horse quite do what he does with his front legs while galloping lol. He's going to be a great eventer. I have a 5 Y/O ottb with the same way of going and I have struggled how to ride her, I have pick up some on some of your tips and had a lesson with a ottb trainer which helped understand how they think (or lack of thought!!) Your XC was fabulous and has inspired me!!!

Lucy, I would have lost it. You are so patient with him. I had a very hot TB mare. We would go for long gallops because that's what she loved. Have you tried any of the legal calming supplements on the market? They may help. You are an inspiration to many who have similar challenges. Thank you.

Loved it. Was swearing like Charlie doing his commentary. Saying the same stuff. Shame it's not like the old days. A good run/steeplechase before cross-country might ease him up and then show jumping last. Just my two cents/pennies from an old Lady.

Topic for discussion: at what score does a rider feel happy with a dressage test? Judges will always find fault, even small faults. I know what the scores mean, and I know what the movements are for, but when ought we to be happy with our scores?

You are a great rider and very brave-but he doesn't buck or rear he just kind of bounces and twists. i had a TB mare I called Teal and she was like that-all fuss but not dangerous . He will be fine-that blue super moon NRG lingered for many days -the eclipse in October willl be another doozy-to be careful around. Deb the dogs at the groomer were all naughty to trim their nails and the trimmer noted the moon also-it has an effect and this one was for days.

Humm, I thought he was going to be different than ur mare but it looks like he’s gonna fight u as much or more. Speaking from experience, over stimulated horses n out of control horses like these r prone for early injuries….not longevity n the show spaces. I just wonder why u don’t get a horse that wants to work n control so u can train them n move up the ranks. A horse like Justine is riding is one for compassion. He listens, tries n is trainable. Justine is going to help n encourage u no matter what kind of horse u have but I’m more n Charlie’s camp. Neither of ur horses have a care n the world for u or ur training. Praying for u to stay safe. The yrs I’ve bred, raised, shown n sold horses has taught me that there’s not time for some kinds of horses. Sometimes it’s best to cut ur losses n move on.
I hate to say this, but I agree. The way he flat out bolts at jumps is dangerous as hell when you’re jumping solid fences. If there was a way to calm him down, it would be great. Idk what training exercises she’s doing at home, but my over enthusiastic show jumpers had to canter in to a related line, halt, and trot out over the second fence. At 70 cm, she could easily trot a whole course! My horses also got canter poles set up each stride to slow them down. Helped them find a rhythm and a consistent stride length. Also did a LOT of grid work with mine. They physically can’t bolt through a grid (unless they just crash through each obstacle). I would say she also definitely needs a stronger bit. No way in hell I would ride a horse in show jumping that bolted at fences like that, much less take it around a solid cross country course. I would do LOTS of trot jumps, half and then trot fences when he wants to bolt. If she has to pull him up completely and make him jump from a walk, she’d could do that at 70 cm. If she doesn’t feel comfortable with walk jumps at that height, go back down a step and do a lower height. His current way of uncontrollable bolting at fences (and then basically leaping in the air like a gazelle) worries me that she’s going to have a bad accident with him cross country.
If all training methods to keep him from grabbing the bit and bolting at the jump, he may need a career change. I know that would be disappointing, but I’ve had to change careers of several of my horses to accommodate their strengths and weaknesses. Running cross country on an OTTB seems like it might not work out bc of his brain just being wired to go as fast as possible and not pay attention to obstacles. He might need to switch to a dressage career or something more slow and relaxing.
Also, am I crazy, or does she look way too tall on him? I’m sure she’s not over his weight limit, but her height might further impede his ability to jump correctly in a bascule bc of her tall upper body. I’d love to see her on a larger, quieter, confidence booster of a horse. Kudos for bravery to try this, but my unsolicited opinion is that this is probably not the ideal eventing horse. Especially for her. I wish them the best, but that’s just what I see from 30 years of riding and training Hunter/jumpers in the U.S. Some OTTB’s thrived in show jumping, while others needed the more relaxed pace and relative simplicity of Hunter courses. I realize that SJ in eventing isn’t a speed event like pure SJ is, but it’s still a more complex course and has more technical questions. Also they still have a time allowed that they have to stay within, don’t they?
Idk. I give props to Lucy for trying, but this horse may just be too much horse for her (or for cross country in general. At least if he plows through a show jump, the rails will fall, and she’ll be less likely to have a rotational fall or other serious accident. If she’s determined to keep this one for eventing, I think she needs to send it to a professional for training. Lucy is a pretty rider, but she doesn’t seem to have the confidence and training ability for a horse like this. I wouldn’t take this horse in a show jumping competition, and I’ve had 17.3 h power house Warmbloods doing the 1.20 classes. AFTER I worked with a trainer to make them responsive to my aids and rideable. You HAVE to be able to keep a steady pace even in SJ (not holding, holding, holding, then bolting) and be able to make adjustments to your pace if you have a line set on a long 5 strides to a short one stride triple combination, or you WILL crash and burn. Maybe some “boot camp” with a more experienced trainer would help.
Hoping for the best for them, and they they stay safe!
