I got pretty good at Spelunky but Spelunky 2 is a whole different ball game. Join me as I try to unravel the mysteries of the moon, and defeat Olmec and conquer the dungeons all over again!

As someone who has gone Volcana only for at least the past 100 runs, I have tips!
1. The most important thing is your mindset. On the non-drill levels, just prioritize safety only. Just get to the exit. As you know, lava sucks real bad. Scan for altars if you don't have the kapala, but ignore all gold and idols. You don't need it; you're not going to the black market. Ignore Monty if he isn't easy, the risk that added complications introduce just isn't worth it, plus there are loads of turkeys that can be easily cooked. Never blow up the robots without making sure that they won't cause lava to flow; you can easily fuck yourself with the robots. They are much more dangerous dead than alive. Anyways, just focus on not dying to lava and getting to the end. If you get out of Volcana alive and with Vlad's cape, you've won. That's all you need.
2. You don't always have to use the drill. If you have enough bombs (8-9), you can just blow through the floor for a very safe entry to Vlad's castle. Just chart a course through the explosive barrels in the ground. I end up doing this about a third or the time or so, especially when there is bad stuff in the way of the drill. To get the bombs, I always kill Quillback and do the moon challenge on top of bombs from shops. I usually have plenty.
3. If you have to use the drill and it goes through lava, just give it a good long time to drip. You have all the time in the world. Use the full 3 minutes to get into Vlad's castle and get the clover if you have to. The lava will eventually stop dripping. Then, what you need to worry about is the firemen falling down the shaft and knocking you into the lava at the bottom. Here, you just have to descend as fast as you can and get out of the shaft. It's spiced, but it only kills me rarely.
4. You don't need Van Helsing. I only get him when it's really easy, because he's just not necessary. Vlad has a really big weakness, which is that he teleports half the time when you him him, and if you just fight him with the whip, he'll telefrag himself 90% of the time. I lure him down a layer to where there are more blocks in the center of the screen and just let him come at me until he kills himself. It's easy. You don't have to get yourself killed trying to shuttle the key back up the level. The only thing to watch out for is that if you make him teleport off the map (he teleports in the direction he's facing when you hit him), you won't be able to get his cape.
5. Speaking about Vlad's cape, here's the obligatory section about how good it is. Lol. Well, not really. It's not better than the jetpack, at least in my opinion. The great thing is that you Vlad's cape get it every time. How often do you get the jetpack when you go to the black market? Half the time, maybe? When you don't get it, you're stuck with the stinky cape or the hoverpack. Vlad's cape is way better than anything other than the jetpack, and again, you get it every time. That being said, here are some nice things about Vlad's cape that you might not have known:
- Vlad's cape works with spring shoes to increase the height and speed of the double-jump. Using them together is really fun.
- Vlad's cape recharges its double-jump when you grab a wall with climbing gloves. You don't need to land to recharge like you do with the jetpack.
- Vlad's cape makes Olmec really consistent. You can just follow underneath him, double jump up, whip out his hovers when he's ready to drop, and float out from under him and down on top of him. I never fail the second phase, and the third phase is easy if you use bombs. (Note that you can also do this with the jetpack, but again, you don't always get it)
Anyway, that's all. I don't think that Volcana is "better" than the Jungle, but it's at least viable in my opinion, and I like it. It's very fast since you aren't focused on grubbing every possible slice of gold (and this extends backward to the mines), and Vlad's cape is just really fun to use. I'll probably start doing more jungle runs when I've beaten the game the real way a couple times, but until then I'm cool with Volcana. I hope you can learn to not hate it.

No matter how poor/great/unlucky/cursed the plays are, the entertainment value is always at the highest tier of pog.
Only NL and Danny DeVito can follow up a tense moment where he almost kills himself for absolutely no reason with a "🎶donkeydonkey donkadonk" and a successful, much deliberated idol heist by just walking out of the shop with the item and getting murdered instead of buying it.

NL suffers from the same great temptation I have in bopping the Volcana robots on the head, it's just too satisfying despite the route breaking lava flows it creates.

NL jumped directly into lava 12:59 and then directly towards an exploding robot 25:52. He hates Volcana so much his brain is self sabotaging his runs.

Pro tip: Try to never disturb lava pools. They mostly generate in traversable ways but when a bomb or an activated robot messes that pool up then it can go bad real quick.
I did a lot worse on Volcana until I stopped jumping on the robots. If you don't like it though, the updates are attempting to make going to the black market more enticing. Not really sure that was needed, to be honest. I always thought they were both viable options.
The real BS in Volcanya truly is those fireballs. An enemy which appears seemingly at random, can't be jumped on, aggros shopkeepers. I honestly think it would make more sense difficulty-wise for tidepool/jungle to be level 2 and then temple/volcania level 3.
the magma dudes always have a tell for when they jump out and a timer before they jump out again, it's not random, and if they kill shopkeepers you don't get blamed for it. just pay attention and don't be impatient and they're easy enemies

I always feel so bad stealing from and killing the Cave Men shopkeepers. They are just trying to make a living.
I think it is important to acknowledge that things have more than one attribute.
The cape has double jump, floating and double blood and not-exploding. The rock-dog isn't just a turkey roaster, it also is a double jump and a almost-shotgun-equivalent weapon for combat. Yes, the black marked holds a lot of stuff if you are willing to do a crime or have a shitload of gold, but you do also get a room full of crates in vlad's castle and not "only" vlad's cape.
The jungle vs volcana thing is a many faceted debate and I don't think there is necessarily a "correct" answer (especially taking into account varying styles of gameplay, varying levels of skill, and the variance between any individual run up to quillback).
I find the jungle to be a complete and utter nightmarish super-hell that i would want to avoid at all costs whenever I can (big spikes, small spikes, spike traps, beartraps, witch doctors, etc.), but of course volcana has a lot of super dangerous things in it aswell.
My point is: look at things from multiple angles, not just at one of it's attributes at a time.
Honestly, witch doctors are enough a reason by themselves to never go to the jungle.

Volacania is punishment for missing the udjat eye- no paste, few shops, no black market, lava, lava + drill, higher chances of altars getting blown up.

Don’t worry Egg, I did the same thing on what was looking to be a good run. I scavenged hard to get enough gold for a jet pack, and I picked it up without paying and got killed. Couldn’t even be mad at that point.
Hi, I wish to say something nice about Volcana. You don't need to farm gold if you do the Volcana run, you can just speed through the Caves and not worry about picking up every ghost pot.

I will say, the fire enemies killing shit like monty IS bullshit, but both actual deaths were user error for sure. The first one he could've taken the upper path, the latter he could've A) not bopped the robot, or B) having already done so, realized it was very likely gonna break that pillar, and resign himself to not going back for rock dog and such.
In hindsight, C) taken the rock dog from the start. That extra mobility would've made is plausible to go back and get the freeze ray.
But yeah, A, not breaking the robot at all was the best choice. I sometimes blow up the robots in bad ways too, but as a volcana lover I don't blame it on the game when I set off a bomb and the bomb does exactly what you'd expect.
Volcana is harder than the jungle overall IMO, but most of all NL just doesn't have good Volcana habits ingrained at all. I hope one day he gets there.
I see, the reason you never go to Volcanya is because you're compelled to jump into the lava for some reason. It's alright, lots of people have weird addictions.

I think it's as much your mindset as anything that's hampering you in Volcana. The instant death mechanics are a lot more visible than in the jungle area and Vlad's Cape is worth any ten items on a regular run.
I don’t think Vlads cape is very good, but it won’t blow up which I like. If I get the ice gun I do volcano though, because it makes vlads castle super easy, and you can blast lava away with the gun too.
To be fair, lava glows like a sun and most of the time if your fault if you make an imposible situation

My theory is that people say they prefer Volcana to flex their l33t g4m3r status, since it's clearly the harder way with an inferior item payout on top.

You need to start carrying lizards and stuff to the alter my guy. You they give the same amount of points as a turkey and can take 2 hits of full stun before dying giving you plenty of time to carry them to the alter based on location. Same goes for live moles and cavemen. Don't miss your chance at the kapala
