Uhura showed the world that a FEMALE could more than handle a military AND scientific career. Let's not forget, Uhura was a leader in communication and translation science. She ran her own department on Enterprise. Yes, that's right, in the 1960's, during a lot of racial unrest, Star Trek was saying that a WOMAN OF COLOUR could hold down a major command position on a very important starship. The entire KKK can just choke on that.. Young females of every race and religion watched, and were stunned. And dared to try. God bless you Ms. Nichols.
What some these directors of episodic TV don't realize is no one knows a character better than the actor or actress who portrays them. If they say that is out of character for this character, a good director is going to realize that this isn't insubordination, but trying to get the job done in the best way possible. Sure, the director can flex his muscles and say, I don't care, do it anyway, but that will damage the credibility of the series and therefore affect ratings. In the business of TV shows, ratings are money.
What a gracious lady! One sunday, at a party at Captain Kirk's house, she introduced herself to me,... and (lost in my own thoughts,.... i didn't know who she was. So, she gently reminded me. At first, I thought she might have been Nancy Wilson. I sure hope i played it off convincingly. :-)
What Nichelle Nichols is talking about got me thinking. On the bloopers reel she says something smiling about sugar, somewhat sultry. I wonder if that is where it came from? You know, got her thinking and it came out that way..
Roddenberry says, "Nichols will do anything....................... but Uhura won't". excellent!

THANK YOU! Please keep characters IN CHARACTER! Love her!

A class act!
Gene Roddenberry was an incredible man and an epic troll!

Wow! I love this!!!
Her Uhura had some class and dignity I miss in the 'new' bitchy uhura. Nothing better than Nichelle Nichols scene with the 'mirror mirror' sulu!
And this is why the JJ-verse has no heart and no amount of lens flare can compensate.
