Before I saw this video I didn't know where to begin, now it seems so simple to operate the tools! It took me about 2 minutes to draw a simple house from the tutorial. I had a little problem with the chimney but finally got it!
Wow! Wow! Wow! It is as if a new world just opened up for me. I decided three months ago I am going to take up Woodworking as a hobby. With NO DIY experience whatsoever. I am 60, so it is a bit late for new hobbies. But what the heck. One of the things I knew I had to learn was Sketchup. Also not an easy thing to learn when you are my age. But this looks doable. Will keep you posted. LOL
Trying to raise the roof by selecting center line and then move. As soon as I press move the selected line becomes unselected. Move wants to select either left or right side of the rectangle. What Am I doing wrong?
How do I stop the line drawing? I click to make a line, but I can't figure out how to end the line. If I click, it just sets another point and continues the line when I move the mouse. He managed to draw his example lines on the roof, then somehow he moved to another area of the roof and disconnected from his first line to start the chimney. I can't do that; the line is always there, dragging behind me!. . . . .Ok, somehow I managed to do it, but I'm not sure how. Later I realized he mentions briefly something about the escape key to stop the line. Would have been nice to have that instruction the first time. Even so, I still get inconsistency when I try to draw lines. Sometimes I can get them to do what he shows, but more often I can't. When I do, it's usually some random thing I did that I can't duplicate.
Two long reoccurring Issues - Help Please: 1. When I draw for a long while and the model becomes more complex, I find that when I erase an unwanted line crossing my original rectangular plane, the plane is erased, leaving the outline perimeter lines. Example: I use the rectangle tool to draw a single horizontal plane. Then I draw shapes on the rectangle. I may make many additions and erasures along the way. a) Then, when I erase a single line within the rectangle, the plane is removed. b) Another way the issue appears is, If I right click and erase the original plane leaving the outer four lines of the plane. When I try to draw the plane back again, using the rectangle tool and the original corner points of the first rectangle, it will not create the plane. I should note that the other 2-D shapes I drew on the plane still are there. Suggestions? 2. Also, with this not really very complex drawing described in the above example, I sometimes find that when I attempt to draw a rectangle to create a surface, the surface will not draw. I have found that this can be caused by an infinitesimally short line that is attached to one leg of the rectangle perimeter lines. It is so small, that it can only be seen by zooming all the way in on the leg to then erase it. The way I find this short line is to a draw diagonal line on the rectangular plane. One triangular area will become a solid plane and the other half will remain open. Continue drawing diagonal lines until there is only a small open plane. Then I zoom it to erase this errant line. Question: is there an easier/faster way to do this? Much Thanks in advance! Will
Hey Sketchup, why are your tutorials so hard to find? There is no playlist so it really makes things hard to find for us newbies and to know where to start and what one is best to watch next.
This tutorial is NOT directed at beginners. For years, (I'm 42) I've solely used Graph paper to do my designs. This is my first foray into designing on computer, therefore I'm a true BEGINNER. Could you please make a video for those of us that haven't the training you do? Also, showing how it's done on PC would be helpful.
It is extremely difficult to perform a simple task like drawing a rectangle make multiple copys of it flip them if needed and move and line them up in the orientation you want. I could do stuff like that over 10 years ago in Publisher and it was very intuitive and easy to find out how to do it. I have spend hours in Sketchup trying to understand how to make something easy like that happen but I give up. I am going to draw on paper and import/scan in to sketchup and see if that is easier and if it works to scale it without being a professor in geometry. I am really sorry but that is my impression of ketchup
Hello sketch up! I'm new to this software and I have finished this list so can you please tell me which lessons should I watch next? Thank you very much!
Hopefully you notice me i am confused because i dont see a camera veiw thing and i also dont have a mouse because this new touchscreen laptop does not have a usb drive
hm... The "click > click" UX convention is definitely going to mess with me. As a designer, all of my programs are click and drag based. I'm honestly curious as to what led to the decision to use that method as oppose to clicking and dragging? (I'm asking this with curiosity, not criticism).

I can't even start sketch up, because my osx is a 10.9, not 10.10. I really want to use it, but so far a waste of time, and spinning my wheels. the mac can't be upgraded to the new OS. I see no way to install one of the older versions of sketch up.
ok, so i just found an older version with a google search, but it's a trial version of pro, 30 days, not make. I don't want to buy pro, so this is just difficult. I just wanted a simple version of make, for some home use. i guess that's to hard.
Thanks for the easy to follow tutorial! I followed up to pull the roof. I select my line and it was Blue but as soon as I select the push/pull icon, my selected blue line is no longer blue so I was not able to pull my roof up at all.

Ok, i down the free version and I don’t have all these tools, what gives. And what’s with drawing with no dimensions? I’m interested in doing drawings that someone else can use to build something for me. Do I really need to upgrade to be able to achieve that goal.
All the tools in this video are in the free Web version: help.sketchup.com/en/sketchup-web/sketchup-web-main-toolbar And everything you draw in SketchUp has a real-world dimension. Check out this video to see how to add them. Note: the following video shows the Desktop version, but the Dimension tool acts the same on Web. ua-cam.com/video/zrQtFlm6JH8/v-deo.html

Hi, just wondering if anyone can help me. I've JUST started with SketchUp Pro and notice the measurements are imperial and I need metric. I can't find how to change it. Thanks in advance
Interesting- so you have incorporated a 3D (or even 4D) modeling element with just the mouse. I recall having to use a dedicated 4D input device with a dozen programable buttons to do CAD CAM, but this seems much cleaner, simpler and with a lower learning curve. Nicely done. Question: I was hoping as you showed th part about creating steps, there might be a brief reference how to create such boxes of pre-determined dimensions (like 4' by 6') instead of having to struggle to get the dimensions exactly right as I move the cursor back and forth. Is that in a coming tutorial?
Oh sweet! Where's the part where you show how to re-size an object by inputting dimensions? I'm a professional cabinet maker/furniture designer & current Autodesk user who's been actively trying to switch to Sketchup for about 3 years but I've consistently just found myself banging my head against the wall. I may be missing something, but I'd rather continue to pay a premium for a functional product than fight w a toy pretending to be a tool. Here's your opportunity to sell me. @@SketchUp

Good question, Mike! Unlike other drawing programs, SketchUp does not have a "2D" mode. Everything is in 3D! The idea that you are always drawing in 3D is one of the things that sets SketchUp apart. This means that learning to crawl happens in 3D!

I can’t find a template in the free version of SketchUp
This is really awesome. Great and easy instruction! I don't even need to use CAD software but SketchUp makes me want to doodle in 3D.
Your user interface is different than the one that a beginner will see. You have a floating toolbar full of buttons on the left side.
