You really helped me out. Really appreciate your help. The only thing I couldn't figure out is how to save for instance a snare roll (the way I want it) on a pad...or even a "sample" (or a fill from ez drummer on a pad). Maybe you could do a little video about this step by step👍
Hey thanks for the comment! I'm not sure how you would save a snare roll or a fill from EZ drummer onto a pad, I honestly don't know if it's even possible. If you're recording I would just say that you can play the songs without the fills and stuff and just drag and drop those from EZ drummer afterwards. But since you want to add it to pads I'm guessing you might want to perform songs with this setup. Then I would create the fills and snare rolls and export them into audio files, then you can find any sampler and have that as a track next to EZ drummer. Then just make sure that the pads you want to use don't trigger anything in EZ drummer, and that those pads only triggers the samples you have added to the sampler. I hope that makes sense 😊
Apple computer simply doesn't play well with Akai! Spent 2 hours trying to download Akai software for editing my MPD218 pads and the app keeps crashing. Sorry but my Akai 218 and my other Akai keyboard/controller device will both be used to prop open my door (I need two hands to bring in the equipment I need that actually works with my mac)! There may be a place for Akai and their products, and I've enjoyed their home stereo stuff but I think there are other alternatives that "just work" with my Mac/Logic Pro setup. thanks for the video. Hi there, thanks for the video. I can't get a sound out of it on either Ubuntu or Windows.. it lights up but none of the instruments shown produce any sound at all. I've downloaded the Akai software and installed Reaper, but nothing. Any ideas anyone?
Do you have any other midi devices that work? Like a keyboard? If you have other devices making sound and not the MPD that's a little strange. It could be the plugin that you are trying to use though. I know that some plugins need to have a setting for what midi channel they are using to work. For example I use "Kontakt" which is a sort of VST instrument loader. It has a setting called something like "Midi Ch:" Where I have to change it from whatever it says to "Omni" which I believe just means "All" and then it starts to work. So it might be a setting in the plugin that you are trying to use. Hope that helps! 😁
@@EV_Music I tried to get Reaper running on Ubuntu first, but all the proprietary software forced me onto an old Windows laptop I keep for emergencies. The VU shows input from the MPD, but no sound in any configuration. I imagined the default would be what's plugged in (headphones) but nothing. In the video it's plug in, pick a channel and that's it, but I must be missing something.
Hi! You can check where reaper find VST plugins and add folder paths to where reaper checks for VST plugins by going to the "Options" drop down menu on the top. Then in the left window with the list you will find "VST" almost at the bottom of that list. On the top it will show you the "VST plug in paths) There's a button under there to the right which says "Edit path list..." there you can add folders reaper should check for plugins. Then you have to scan for them to show up.

@@j.m5888 Two things come to mind. Nr 1: You're adding VST's to a normal track. The input for the track should be set to "Midi" You can find a setting there called "All Midi Inputs" and then choose "All Channels" for your track input. Another way to just add VST instruments is by right clicking down where your tracks are and choose "Insert virtual instrument on new track" and I believe it then should automatically set the input to "All Midi Channels" As I commented on you're other comment, it might be a setting in the plugin. You could test that by installing Spitfire Audios "LABS", that is a VST management software. Almost like "Steam" for games. But all those LABS instruments are free and of very good quality, especially for bein free. You can find out how to get startet with that here: www.spitfireaudio.com/getting-started-labs I believe that if you install those instruments in their default path, that reaper will find them. On the LABS plugin you can easily see that "Midi Ch: ..." is a setting on the top there. So by installing something like the "Soft Piano" that they have and setting the "Midi Ch:" to "Any". Then that should work.

And it's such a hassle having to deal with all the programs and devices when all you want is to just make some music :/ Since you mentioned that it's a laptop though, I would guess your setup is fairly portable. So if you have a local music gear store, you might try taking it there and ask if someone there knows.
After you have installed it just press the Windows "start menu" button. Then use the "search programs and files" function there, and search for "MPD218 Editor" then you'll see it somewhere in the menu there. Hope that helps 😊

Hey! Yes, the AKAI MPD218 should work in any DAW. If you're looking into which DAW you want to use I highly recommend Reaper. But if you're more into beats and hip-hop/rap you might like Fruity Loops better. There are a couple of other DAWs out there as well, so by doing some googeling and reading you should be able to find one that sounds appealing to you. i've changed the pads in editor to match the notes on the pads within a VST/plug in saved to hardware as well however when im in my DAW the vst doesnt respond even though my daw responds that im hitting the pad. (Monitoring is also enabled and the track recognizes that its a midi device. Im using studio one as my DAW i dont know if i should just use another DAW or if theres something im missing when editing in editor any advice helps.
Hey, what plugin is it that you're trying to use? There might be a setting within the plugin that has to change. What you could do aswell is to download Reaper and to see if it works in that DAW. Reapers trial period continues forever after the initial 30 days, so you could use reaper as a DAW to test things like these when they occur.

I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I just unboxed my MPD218 and downloaded the MPC Beats software, the preferences seem fine but when I click on a pad there is no sound. I've watched several youtube videos, and I'm still not sure how to make it work... really sucks. Do you know what I'm doing wrong?

I got it to work with the MPD232 wich is just a different version of the mpd218. I followed this guide: ua-cam.com/video/VNg0cIKy9IQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=MatthewStratton I loaded the pop demo project as he does and switched between pad layouts and one of them worked. But it does seem kinda buggy. Probably just user errors from my end though. If I were you though I would try using Reaper instead, there is a trial period, but you can use it for free after the trial period is over as well. You just have to wait some seconds and click still evaluating. And if you decide to buy it, it only cost 60 usd. I'm not much of a beat maker my self though, but you can follow this guide to get started: ua-cam.com/video/xiws6eDy2kQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=REAPERMania If you decide to go with reaper then don't hesitate to ask for help if you encounter problems or have questions, I know that learning DAWs and getting stuff setup correctly can be a pain in the ass.

Might be something that has to do with the DAW you are using. But if you're thinking of getting reaper you should know that it is free. Reaper has a trail period of 30 days that can be extended without cost forverer. After the 30 days you'll get message that gives you a 5 second wait time before you can click "Still evaluating" and continue using it. So I recommend to anyone starting out to get reaper and that they can buy a license to get rid of that 5 sec wait time whenever they have the money for it. So you could test to see if the drums work in reaper. 🙂
I tested the stand alone version of EzDrummer. I use EZ drummer 2 and it works there. This was what I had to do: Go to "Settings" top left corner, then choose "Audio/MIDI Setup". Then click "MIDI Device" on the menu to the left. Then check the box that says MPD218 and click apply. Then it should work 👍 If it doesn't work, then let me know 🙂
@@EV_Music I am trying to get this to work and it is impossible. Even if I set the parameters in the AKAI editor and save them correctly - they will not change in EZ Drummer 2 behavior. The AKAI editor is simply the worst software on the planet. I truly regret buying the MPD218. Garbage!

@@erickvalencia2016 So lets say you want to do this with the kick which is note 36. You want that to be the lower left pad as an example. Then make sure in the pad editor that the lower left is note 36 and that you assign it to the "Pad Bank" you want and which program select you want. Then you have to make sure youre on the correct pad bank and that you are using the correct program selection. So if you send youre changes to pad bank A and program selection 1. Then make sure you are on pad bank A and program selection 1. Then youre kick should be triggering on the lower left pad. Then to change the kick sample. You would do that in the EZdrummer window. It's the same place where I show you where to check what key that triggers the drum. Theres a drop down menu there where you choose which kit you want to use. When picking a kit there, the list of samples changes and you can mix samples from the kits you have installed. So if you change the kick sample there, then you lower left pad will trigger that new kick sample. I hope that made sense and that it solves your problem. If not then let me know, I might also have misunderstood the problem so :P

If you're thinking of getting battery from native instrument I made a setup video using the MPD218: ua-cam.com/video/-eVni87BB6A/v-deo.html I would also recommend to wait for native instruments summer sale and go for the full Komplete bundle instead of buying battery by it self!
Hey, sorry about that. I know that in some plugins you can just right click and then it will say something like "Learn MIDI Automation" you would just click that on the plugin parameter that you want the knob to change then just move that knob around right after you clicked the "learn midi" thing. That works in "kontakt" at least, I tried to do it in the synth "Massive" right now, but right clicking the knobs in the plugin gave me no option, so I'm unsure of how to do it if the right click of the mouse button way doesn't work. Haha! 😂 So true, I was 117kg (258 pounds) back then. I'm 93kg (205 pounds) now. I'm 1,95m (6,4 foot) tall though, so 93kg isn't really that bad. But I will continue to workout and try my best to keep my diet clean 💪

Also, where do you need to put the VST files for Reaper to recognise them? I've tried loads of locations within the C: drive for Reaper, and nothing..

How did you pull up the MPD218 Editor? Failed to mention it. Thanks man!
After you have installed it just press the Windows "start menu" button.

Then make sure in the pad editor that the lower left is note 36 and that you assign it to the "Pad Bank" you want and which program select you want. Then you have to make sure youre on the correct pad bank and that you are using the correct program selection. So if you send youre changes to pad bank A and program selection 1. Then make sure you are on pad bank A and program selection 1. Then youre kick should be triggering on the lower left pad. Then to change the kick sample. You would do that in the EZdrummer window. It's the same place where I show you where to check what key that triggers the drum. Theres a drop down menu there where you choose which kit you want to use. When picking a kit there, the list of samples changes and you can mix samples from the kits you have installed. So if you change the kick sample there, then you lower left pad will trigger that new kick sample.

I don't know, but I wouldn't bet on it. There might be other midipad devices that are more suitable for your use. If you have a music equipment store you frequent I would recommend asking them 🙂 Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

@@NathanBeckrules That sounds strange. So when you insert the virtual instrument track, it never shows up? But you can hear EZdrummer when playing the pads of your mpd?

Hey, sorry about that. I know that in some plugins you can just right click and then it will say something like "Learn MIDI Automation" you would just click that on the plugin parameter that you want the knob to change then just move that knob around right after you clicked the "learn midi" thing. That works in "kontakt" at least, I tried to do it in the synth "Massive" right now, but right clicking the knobs in the plugin gave me no option, so I'm unsure of how to do it if the right click of the mouse button way doesn't work.

Haha! 😂 So true, I was 117kg (258 pounds) back then. I'm 93kg (205 pounds) now. I'm 1,95m (6,4 foot) tall though, so 93kg isn't really that bad. But I will continue to workout and try my best to keep my diet clean 💪

@@EV_Music man first of all thank you. Normally i am not someone who write like this but this device drive me crazy. It was a problem in the editor i figure it out but believe me i almost had heart attack because of anger. I think i am shot a video for this because none of videos in youtube did not help me first time for years.
