I remember I did very pathetically in this run, only barely making it to the end. I was streaming it to my friends, and on the way, we had nicknamed it my Zombie Run, because I totally should've died in Asphodel but I barely slipped free of death each encounter. We were all laughing and joking about how quickly Hades would kill me, but then he just let me through, and we were all laughing even harder.
I was streaming it as well when the same happened. Although in my case I prepped so hard and was trying to show off only for Hades to say *no* lmao. Never before had I seen a game make skipping a boss fight entirely such an emotional moment. Especially since everything to that point emphasized just how stubborn Hades is. Hades ignoring Zagreus's taunt at the end is a great character moment, too, contrasting him with all the other Olympians, who are quick to lash out in response to any slight.
@@diamondfrieza5391 I think Hades, as the masterpiece it is, captures very well the Greeek mythology vibes: the gods are very human, guided by emotions. There's no right or wrong, good or bad, there's just beings experiencing feelings and emotions and acting on them for the reasons they believe to be right
Hades might be one of the most short-tempered gods of all but he's probably the tamest. Perhaps constant communication with the dead levels his arrogance.
I love how this game's mechanics are all built into the story, from respawning after death because the starting area is literally where everyone goes when they die, to Hades having a closet full of big cloaks he burns at the start of his fight every time. Then there are moments like this, where Hades being a recurring boss fight is subverted, and your run ends peacefully.
I especially like how throughout, you keep doing the same gameplay (battling out of the underworld), but your motivations change with the story. And it all keeps making sense in the story.
Honestly, I usually hate roguelikes because i hate having to go back and redo everything only to die again and make little progress. Hades has that be the focus of the game and it is built for the player as the goal to stop having to go back, the progression in the game is much more obvious compared to other roguelikes where its like "Oh you died? Well, just block and parry next time" where as here the rewards for each attempt mean something and every time you really feel like "this is the one, I got this this time." and the story plays into that. When I die, I don't feel the urge to just turn off the game and take a shower, I want to talk with people to see where the story is going to go.
I went into this fight so absolutely sure I would die and lose my 9-in-a-row streak because my build was dogshit, and then this happened. HUGE sigh of relief.
@@SpectralLumo Thats a fair guess but it is Supergiant Games, they are known for their quality games. But I think it can be easily assumed that it be of high quality nonetheless
@Jesus Castillo yeah, I genuinely think SuperGiant will make this an amazing game. Idk if how I worded it was awkward or not, but I have really high hopes for hades 2 that it'll be just as good as the original.
Even if they don’t surpass it, it’s likely going to be a great game. The bar is just the level that they need to beat for Hades 2 to be better than the first.
This is as close as you can get to a perfect game. And to make you feel joy instead of being robbed that the final boss lets you pass... that's a testament to the amazing storytelling. I can't wait for the sequel.
Well, the Final Boss of Hades isn't a power-hungry tyrant on the verge of taking over the world (We'll have time for that in Hades 2). Ultimately, Hades 1 boils down to the struggle of a broken family, and the jaded son is at odds with the long-overworked father. They both adamantly believe that their own stance is the optimal outcome, and they only fight because each one dreads the very real despair that could come with the alternative. It just so happens that the dad is responsible for every mortal that has ever died & will ever die.
@@thegreendragon5390 yea, they really make you start out hating Hades, then he evolves into a deeply sympathetic character. Especially as a dad I understood a lot of his struggle.
This moment hit... differently for me. You have to understand, I was playing for almost the entirety of early access. It had been two years. Obviously they didn't actually implement the Hades fight until a good ways through that time period, but even so, I had fought and defeated him more than a hundred times already. I tell you this because I want you to imagine what it's like to have the inevitability of this final fight so ingrained in you from all those runs- and then, finally, finally, the day comes. Two years of striving and preparing and persevering... and for the first time, the very first time in hundreds of times, there is no fight. Hundreds of runs ending in one of us or the other dying. And then finally one that does not. It was one of the few times that I've ever been truly speechless. I'll never forget it.
In that moment Hades understood, that no matter what he does, the fight will continue until one of the two get tired of this... And clearly, Zagreus isn't budging... I think this final happens after you uncover the whole story and finally you get to the Hades's chamber just to see the truth of him
When he did this in my game, it was on the run where I'd decided to fight him using Chaos' artifact to get that challenge done. Since there was no fight, it didn't count. I'm betting Chaos found my frustration even more entertaining.
You know what I love about this game? That it’s premise is structured like Greek tragedy. Son of Hades has to endure forces of underworld itself, fight his own father, just so he could spend 5 minutes with his mom before dying, only to repeat it all over again. If that’s not tragically beautiful I don’t know what is

Curious, what was the build, my best build was an easily spammable Full Bar Artemis’ Aid from a lot of Boons that charged it up quicker and increased damage from using Aid. Probably did a 1/3 of his health with every use.

I can only recall two times in my entire history as a gamer where I had ZERO desire to skip the end credits. The first was this game. The second was Nier: Automata.
My run was absolutely cracked when I found this, all 3 death defiances left, a cracked out Dionysus special with Chiron, and I decided to just take the easy win since I’m used to just throwing completely winnable fights
This happened to me as I was trying to complete the "Defeat Hades with every Weapon" Quest, and I was struggling to get to the end with the last weapon. The Shield. GOD I hate the Shield. And then he just let me pass, letting me complete the Quest AND bring home The Mommy.
This happened when I had one revive but full health with the aspect of Gilgamesh. I had doom in my attacks and critical strength in my specials. I was fully ready for this fight and I skipped through the dialogue only to be let go. I came back here to see what he said.
When I reached this part, I was doing miserably with Coronacht, a weapon I was appalling with. I was so worried that this fight would be ended on the word "GO" but then I just got this. I had to back off for a minute to realize what'd happen.

I accidentally skipped the first line of dialog in my playthrough. Thanks for the video!!
I can only recall two times in my entire history as a gamer where I had ZERO desire to skip the end credits. The first was this game. The second was Nier: Automata.
Tbf zagreus read him to filth. That insult prolly depleted hades health bar before the fight begun
I just remembered... I hadn't played Hades since my dad died... And the next run I won... This is what happened... Oh no...
I really liked this unique interaction 😊 i also miss seeing and hearing greece 😢
My run was absolutely cracked when I found this, all 3 death defiances left, a cracked out Dionysus special with Chiron, and I decided to just take the easy win since I’m used to just throwing completely winnable fights
i remember thinking oh fuck i will prob die at hades and then this happend and it couldnt be more happy
I wish you could still go to Greece even after she comes back to your house. I just miss the music man 😭
“No death defiances”🥺😢
I miss the Greece location after Persephone moves back in. Such a chill atmosphere.
I was totally ready to get my ass beat, and was surprised by this ending. Plus got a bass out of it, right inside his chamber.
With that title, I thought I was gonna get something very different
I had such a good build going into this and all my death defiances still intact. Thought I was about to leather him, but I’ll take the free W.
This is how you merge story and gameplay seamlessly.
The one cape that has been saved from being burned...
Eh, probably got burned in their next fight.
supergiant wipes the floor with all other studios
Hades really loves her 🥺🥺
"How can we justify Hades attacking him after saying that?"
"................we can't?"
"Free pass?"
" Free pass."
GREASE IS SO BEAUTIFUL
I would have sat there for a half hour to see if he would, in fact, reconsider.
When I reached this part, I was doing miserably with Coronacht, a weapon I was appalling with. I was so worried that this fight would be ended on the word "GO" but then I just got this. I had to back off for a minute to realize what'd happen.
I miss seeing the surface
This game really is a masterpiece. I don't say this lightly.
Can't wait for the sequel :)
“You’re serious?” Zagreus…and me
I wish it was a setting to turn walking through greece back on after completing the story. It looks so pretty. Maybe they could occasionally add an encounter with someone
I never knew you could look out over greece like that 3:(
This game have some of the best voice acting I've ever seen in a video game. I just never skip whenever Zagreus is speaking.
Now that a pity win if I've ever seen one
