El Çid - Song in Old Spanish | The Skaldic Bard

  • Here’s an original song I wrote and performed in Old Spanish, this time about the adventures of Rodrigo Díaz, better known by his nickname “El Cid”, during the Reconquista of Spain against the Moors in the 11th Century. The text is based on the Cantar De Mio Çid written some time in the 12th or early 13th Century. It’s an epic piece of writing by an anonymous author, which describes in great detail the legendary deeds of El Cid.
The name “El Cid” itself is from the Arabic honorific title “as-Sayyid” translating roughly as “The Master”. El Cid ended up fighting for the Moors against other Moors vying for power in Spain at one point in his military career, having been exiled by King Alfonso for fighting with his enemies in a domestic political struggle. Despite being outcast, El Cid recognised King Alfonso as the rightful king and vowed to win back his reputation with the king. Through his military endeavours, he proved his worth, taking many lands back from the Moors, most notably Valencia, which he then successfully defended against an enormous Moroccan army.
This is my attempt to condense the story of El Cid up to the taking of Valencia. Please note that I’m not trying to glorify violence, rather tell history as it was lived by the people at the time.
I hope you enjoy the song! Please leave a comment, like the video and subscribe if you’d like to see more! Many thanks for helping the channel in whatever way you’re able to.

    Yo Rodrigo Díaz só echado
de tierra en la lucha por Espanna.
    Venido a moros, un exido,
mas con rrey Alfonso non querría lidiar.
    Bésovos, el mio sennor
los pies e las manos amas,
    quel’ ayades a mí merçed,
    sí el Criador vos vala.
Mostrar le he el mio valor.
    Con mesnadas vó por Espanna
lidiando con moros en el campo,
las lorigas vestidas, çintas las espadas!
    Con la merçed del Criador,
    nuestra ser ha la ganançia
    Feridlos, mios cavalleros,
    A Castiella irán buenos mandados

Egypt has already become a highly centralized state since beginning, it had abundant resources and the ruler gathered power well, so no matter how higher Aristocrats changed, the people actually still serve everyone as their god, no matter who conquered Egypt, Romans, Greeks, “Mild” Religion, they become the Egyptians in the end.
So technically, it is very difficult to set Reconquest in Egypt.

@@kemtpesmatic1584 (Personal Opinion) Technically it still have chance, if the reconquest success, the leader did not fall into the terrible circle of Egyptian history, they learn the Western Europeans, more specifically U.K., started the limitation of the central state, but on condition that first,
the main religion (A so-called “mild” Religion) in Egypt must have movement like Reformation, or like the founding father of Modern Turkey Kemal, separated the Temple and State, so that the Religion will not kidnap the people’s normal life. But if it cannot work, maybe just wish the Christians could get the multiple in the state so that the political compromises could be form. So current situation in “Mild” Religion world need authoritarian regime or military regime to force the state separate the temple, but the hand of violence is not good for long term, if the violence was loosen, the people under such domain will be like sand, falling on the ground, and then the most violent one will succeed in the end, so this is the reason how ISIS showed up and gather power.
Second, When the Temple and State separated, since the Egypt had a long history of Centralized state, it might better started with Feudalism, letting the people getting control for some regions, cultivate the Spontaneous Order, and on the meanwhile weaken the central states. When the time is right, the election limitation could be lightened, so that it could form up mostly a society of citizens, then step by step to the Republic Kingdom Rule.
Finally, which is the most important, DO NOT anti-Free Market. As for this, you could check the satellite photographs between North and South Korea, one is keeping the Free Market and welcome capitalism, another is total anti-market and anti-capitalism, you could identify by yourself.
This is my personal opinion, maybe still too Idealistic, hope it helps you.

    Sehr geehrter Skaldenbarde,

Good idea, Don Pelayo is a National Hero.
Recently there had been debates on the origins of Pelagius. The statue that honors him is more like a Chieftain dressing of a Celtic Tribe (Gallaeci) and his name is not germanic or germanic Latinized (Reccared-Reccaredus for example)
About Inquisition thats true, it was greatly exaggerated, there had been more executions in revolutionary France in a few years than the execution by the Spanish Inquisition from 1478-1808

In Italian we have arrancare that means to struggle to walk. I suppose the etymology is a term that means simply "struggle".

@@iberius9937 thanks a lot, mate! Also, just in response to an earlier comment of yours, it appears I was following an antiquated pronunciation guide which suggested that had already shifted pronunciation to be closer to the modern pronunciation by the Old Spanish period - incredibly annoying to realise after posting, but oh well ;-) Glad you've enjoyed it regardless, my friend

    hola, skald
    hablo español
his was a really interesting song, and my first exposure to Old Spanish. As a speaker of decent Spanish it was nice to compare this with modern Spanish. there are a lot more similarities, i find, in languages like French, Spanish and Occitan with their older counterparts than Old English - I understand why but still interesting
I really liked the stringed instrument at the start, nice tune (lyre or bouzouki maybe?) as well as your percussion which i cannot understand what it's played on but sounds amazing. Once again still love to see the contextual quotes and your vocals and pronunciation were great, well done!
    as always keep it up
    God Bless

    • @SkaldBard
      @SkaldBard  18 днів тому +2

Hey there, friend - great to hear you enjoyed it. You guessed right, the stringed instrument is a bouzouki. The percussion is a basic drum and me slapping the back of my bouzouki ;-) I very much appreciate the kind and thoughtful comment!
