Here’s another original song from me, this time in the Old Saxon language, otherwise known as Old Low German. Music, lyrics and performance by yours truly. This one is about Otto I the Great’s victory against the heathen Magyars at the Battle of Lechfeld in 955. I’ve tried to make the lyrics a little more traditional this time by using Germanic alliterative verse in the verses. Let me know what you think! Upon his father's death in 936, Otto inherited the Duchy of Saxony and kingship of the Germans. He carried on his father's mission to unite all of the German tribes into a single kingdom. The pagan Magyars were marauding and threatening the realm, a problem which Otto responded to strongly, beating them at the Battle of Lechfeld. The German victory secured the Kingdom of Germany and ended nomadic invasions into Western Europe. Following this triumph, Otto I was hailed as emperor and father of the fatherland, and he used his strengthened position as Defender of Christendom after the battle to pave the way for his coronation as Holy Roman Emperor in 962. I hope you enjoy the song. Please like and share the video and leave a comment - I love reading them! As always, we love your songs! I'm a Hungarian (magyar, as we call ourselves), nice to see some representation - even as the opposing side here! We call this battle as the "Battle of Augsburg", which ended the raiding parties towards Western Europe. The last successful raid was conducted against the Byzantine Empire in 968 nearby Thessaloniki, which was a smaller raiding force. Afterwards, most of the attempts were repelled - including the Battle of Arcadiopolis which was led by Sviatoslav I of Kiev, accompanied by many groups of warriors, which included us, magyars, too. As the aftermath, to be short, this led to the Christianization of the magyars and by the coronation of Stephen I of Hungary (in his original, pagan name: Vajk), the Kingdom of Hungary was born. Skald, don't stop with your composing!
As a German, l firmly believe that this battle ended the Magyar age of the horse and saw it become a Christian and European kingdom. One battle and two incredible nations were born. Truly an incredible day for Europe and Christendom

Very good Skaldic Bard, Otto was one of the greatest kings we have in christendom. May I suggest an idea? Do one for San Fernando III, saint-king of Castille that crushed the moors, after his reign their destiny was settled and the end of the Reconquista was just a matter of time. You could try to make it on the "Cantigas de Santa Maria" style.
Old Saxon seems so much closer to Old English than High German. Its possible that Otto the Great's wife, Eadgyth of Wessex, wouldn't have needed any language lessons since they would have probably been almost mutually intelligible speaking in their own languages and would have made sense of the differences quick enough. Louis IV of West Francia/ France, who grew up in England with his maternal uncle King Aethelstan from the ages of 3 to 16 and probably spoke Old English as his first language, also had no difficulty communicating with Otto and indeed the proceedings at the Synod of Ingelheim in 948 were translated into the "lingua teudisca (presumably Saxon rather than Old High German)" so that Otto and Louis would understand.
Because Old Saxon is from the Low German branch. High German and Low German differ greatly. Even today. But High German aspects became way more dominant in the written language, that is why Modern Standard German (which is also called "High German", which is misleading) resembles the High German dialects more than the Low German ones.
This is normal (it was the Angles, the Saxons and the Nordics who founded England) and Old Saxon greatly influenced Old English but in Germany there were other influences such as Old Frankish for example.
I married to a German woman with two strong well-built boys when came to north Germany(Schleswig-Holstein) 2 decades ago. I learned High-German and understand some forms of different Germanic dialects. My father in-law and mother in-law and their families who all are living on the country side also speak Low-German which I was told the language of the old Saxons(West-Germanic) and is closest to old Norse(North Germanic). Hearing the old Saxon song is felt like Odin is about to return to Earth again🖤❤💛
Only that otto the great was catholic and also founded the literall holy roman empire and btw here in germany it was wotan and donar and not odin and thor
@@BanjoSick You all shared the same roots(language, culture and religion) 😅 irrespective of whether or not the ancient Germanic genes did different things in time ;-)
If you are Saxon or German, his name is Wodan (or Woden in English, or Wotan in modern German). Odin is how the Scandinavians call him. Thor is called Donar btw.
Every time I give a listen to old germanic languages i have a feeling this is some kind of fantasy. But realizing they are history makes it even better.
One day the saxons will reap what they sown. The proud Celtic peoples will get the last laugh. Heil king Arthur! Praise William Wallace! 🇮🇲🏴🏴🇮🇪
Skald! Sorry for the late comment, I have been in the middle of nowhere for a number of days and it would be an understatement to say that seeing a new upload from you was jubilating. I like this language, ever so slightly different so that I have no clue what you’re saying but similar enough I make it out, if you know what I mean. Still working out the circumflexes’ indication in this language. And interesting to see the use of ð over þ in all circumstances. And a nice site is the J being used. A new language is always an interesting experience, and I’m glad you share this knowledge for the world, especially as I’m not familiar at all with this language. Lovely instrumental too. The strings and percussion complimented each other and the language very well. I think the consonant-heavy syllables really suit it. Thank you as always Skald Keep up the good work God Bless
As a German, thank you for the good song about my favourite king, and our pious emperor, Otto the Great, pater patriae, for the music, and for the use of Old Saxon. I love it. 🔥👏
Letter from Frederick Barbarossa to Saladin about the strength of the German people (and other peoples of the HRE): "You have desecrated the Holy Land that we reign over by the grace of the Eternal King (...). We demand that you return the land with everything you have stolen. Otherwise, we will start a war: we set the date for one year after November 1 for a trial by combat, by the merit of the living Cross and the true Saint Joseph. With the help of God, you will see the strength of our conquering eagle, our battalions of many races, the Germanic power fighting in peace. The untamed people from the source of the Rhine, the youths of the Danube who never retreat, the tall Bavarians, cunning Swabians. Then you will see our watchful Franks, the swordsmen of Saxony, the tireless Burgundians, the cruel Alpine tribes, the death-thirsty Bohemians, the savage Bolognese, the navigators of Venice, the captains of Pisa. Finally, on the date I mentioned, for the glory of Christ, you will see that my right hand, which you accuse of weakness due to age, has not forgotten how to wield a sword." - Itinerarium regis Ricardi
But then Barbarossa, who had the biggest army in Europe and was at the peak of his power, died while going to the Holy Land. He was leading his army there over Anatolia because it was too big to be transported in ships. If he had reached Jerusalem the Thrid Crusade would have been surely won by the European Crusaders.
@@randomdude2026He managed to lead the army intact to Anatolia, but unfortunately, he di3d. However, he was able to defeat the Turks in some battles (even s@cking their capital). After the emperor died, his army suffered from a disease and was annihilated, unfortunately. At least Frederich di3d as a penitent, for a man who fought against the Pope all his life, in the end, di3d on a mission to defend Christianity.
@@vojtechotava1417 Some ancestors of mine hailed from Moravia, hopefully I can learn Czech so I can visit it one day. Edit: Is it considered a dialect or language? I read that it was a dialect but, I can't really trust Wikipedia.
@@haroldgōdwinessunu We do not exactly have the "Moravian" language. We speak Czech all over the republic. You would find small differences in fringe regional dialects, but only in the shape of a few words, not in a language as a whole. Learn Czech and you will effectively learn "Moravian" 😄 I must warn you though. Although the claim about the difficulty of a language is used by many nations, the Czech is indeed particularly hard to master. It's a Slavic language, hence it has nothing similar to English.
This is beautiful. I love Germania ❤❤❤. Could you make the Rúne Song by Skald but in Old High German/ Proto German or even Old Frankish how you prefer. Please broþar 🙏🙏🙏
Well this sounds somewhat happy for me but i must confess that i really enjoy every melody of yours and they make me quite courageous and powerful despite their subject plus it is a great history lesson. Keep it up i can’t wait for the next song. 😁
As someone who speaks English and poor German, this at first just sounds like a stoke... it sounds so much like something I'm meant to understand but I don't understand most of it, I love it even if I feel like I have dementia...
As an English speaker I would say that I find Frankish more understandable than Old Saxon yet both sound pleasant in my opinion. Maybe the Old Saxons preserved more of the older Germanic languages while western German dialects seem to get closer to modern German in that time period. That is just a guess.
@@sethfrisbie3957I've always had better luck understanding Dutch dialects myself irregardless of its low German dialect in East Netherlands, Frisian in North Netherlands, or a Franconian Dutch dialect in the rest of the Netherlands, I've always found Dutch dialects easier to understand.
@@noahtylerpritchett2682 in my case it is the opposite with Dutch then again I learned more German than Dutch. We can say that with different people comes different experiences.
@@sethfrisbie3957 i think that's because different people probably understand different German dialects better depending on the media of language they listen to.
@@sethfrisbie3957 That guess is true. The changes that made modern German all originated in the south and south west. For Example: The second German Consonant Shift did NOT happen in the north of Germany. That is why you still have dialects in northern Germany that say "Water" (standard German: Wasser; Engl: water) or "slapen" (standard German: schlafen; Engl: sleep) If it weren't for the French influence in English, English would be much closer to the old Germanic language than modern German. But because of the French influence English changed much and often seems to be a mixed Romance-Germanic language.

Skald I cant wait to see another Gothic song. How about tale of Theodoric the Great, Roman Emperor of Gothic origin in all but name? Also cool song, otto the great really did a little trolling
His men were outnumbered. Even then they had the faith in their king. The king held strict discipline not allowing them to break formation and holding the line. Which brought him victory. A man who truly was great
Love this one. I’ve been listening to a lot of videos about the Holy Roman Empire since this came out. Any chance you’d do a song in old Alemannic? I’d imagine it would be somewhat similar to high Frankonian.
Thanks, friend. I actually have Old English Agni Parthene coming soon, but will make a note for Gothic at some point. The main linguistic source for this was the Old Saxon poem Heliand

Awesome stuff man
I married to a German woman with two strong well-built boys when came to north Germany(Schleswig-Holstein) 2 decades ago.

Our continental brothers, the Low Saxons.
It`s a beautiful sound! Thanks

Every time I give a listen to old germanic languages i have a feeling this is some kind of fantasy. But realizing they are history makes it even better.

Thank you as always Skald
Keep up the good work
God Bless
beautiful and powerful masterpiece
As a German, thank you for the good song about my favourite king, and our pious emperor, Otto the Great, pater patriae, for the music, and for the use of Old Saxon. I love it. 🔥👏
Holy smokes! That turnover from comment suggestion, to song! It's incredible, brother.

Skald, you make me very happy.
Letter from Frederick Barbarossa to Saladin about the strength of the German people (and other peoples of the HRE):
"You have desecrated the Holy Land that we reign over by the grace of the Eternal King (...).
This is the most glorious thing I've read today. I wonder where to find more.

After the emperor died, his army suffered from a disease and was annihilated, unfortunately. At least Frederich di3d as a penitent, for a man who fought against the Pope all his life, in the end, di3d on a mission to defend Christianity.

@@haroldgōdwinessunu Indeed. I hail from Moravia.
Learn Czech and you will effectively learn "Moravian" 😄
I must warn you though. Although the claim about the difficulty of a language is used by many nations, the Czech is indeed particularly hard to master. It's a Slavic language, hence it has nothing similar to English.

As a German i must say this is more different than i thought it would be. Old Frankish seems to be more similar to modern German.
That is why you still have dialects in northern Germany that say "Water" (standard German: Wasser; Engl: water) or "slapen" (standard German: schlafen; Engl: sleep)
If it weren't for the French influence in English, English would be much closer to the old Germanic language than modern German. But because of the French influence English changed much and often seems to be a mixed Romance-Germanic language.
