  • How to change engine oil on a John Deere S110 lawn tractor. Including the oil filter.
    Briggs and Stratton oil filter part # 492932. amzn.to/3ld3hzq. **Note** Wrong Briggs oil filter part number is on the video use the correct number above.
    John Deere oil filter part # Am125424. amzn.to/3ld3hzq/.
    I also found they are selling you the tractor without a pre-filter on the air filter and in my opinion is not good for the engine! Use Briggs and Stratton part# 793685 = pre-filter.
    Adjustable oil filter wrench. amzn.to/3JEEJtj.

    Great How-to for the S-110 oil change. My 83 year old sister asked me where the oil drain was on her mower - so she could change the oil for the first time. I think I'd better do it for her! It's a little more complicated (with the trim panels & etc.) than her old walk-behind mower was.
    Thanks for all the additional information, e.g. pre-filter & tools.

    Excellent and comprehensive video. I have a D110 that will be 13 years old in March of 2024 and it still performs well. I also have performed this maintenance many times over those years. I was just looking at new ones since being unsure of the life expectancy of it. Your tips are very creative and I will certainly use them for mess reduction. You are to be commended for knowing what you're doing and doing it right. Thank you.

    More than likely, they don't use pre filters because it's 1. cheaper for them, and 2 make the customer buy more filters. I watch your videos don't always comment.

      Hi Steven, I agree they are saving money. It seems like they don’t care as much to make the engines last. They want the machine to only run for a certain amount of time then they want you to purchase a new one. Thank you for supporting my channel!

    Your videos are excellent. I just picked up an S110 so I’ve been watching a lot of your videos. I put in a mulching kit (the one with the 2 blades and a long plug (I removed the grass chute, hope that’s ok). Regarding oil, it’s confusing. I live in FL and Briggs says use 30 oil for hot climates while the Deere manual says 5w40. Which is it??

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  2 місяці тому +1

      What ever you decide to use for your area, I would suggest using a full synthetic oil to give you the extra protection and make sure you check your oil often to make sure it is at the correct level at all times. Change your oil on a regular basis and you will be good!

    Also I noticed when you started it to check you ran it on low throttle. Pardon my ignorance but what's your thoughts on idling or running full throttle. Can you please give a brief explanation on it. As the manual says to always run it under full throttle but I was curious as to when idling would come into play. Do you idle at full throttle or low?

      In my opinion, it is not good to start a cold engine and run it at full speed until the engine gets close or even up to the normal operating temperature. Let it warm up so all parts are up to temperature. With todays non adjustable carburetors, they do need to be warmed up before they are working correctly. Of course how long you warm up your machine depends on the climate you live in.

    I have a dumb question. I've seen somewhere, I don't remember where, but it said not to use auto motor oil on small engines. It said that the additives used in car oil is not good for small engines. I've always use car oil before reading this. I do see that there is lawnmower oil but its not as easy to find and auto oil.

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  Рік тому

      You can find specialty oil for most every engine. My opinion, change your oil and oil filter on a regular basis, use the correct weight oil for your location (where you live) and make sure the API rating is good for the year of the engine.

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  Рік тому

      I personally have never added anything to the oil. The main thing is, just perform the usual maintenance, like changing your oil when you should, start using the synthetic oil and you will be fine.

    My question is did you do an oil change at the 5 hour mark. It suggests it in the manual for the break in but my neighbor didn't do his and its got 30 on it and hasn't been changed at all.

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  Рік тому

      It is up to the person who owns the machine on how they will take care of the machine. The suggestion of the oil change after a few hours of run time is due to when they make the engine new at the factory the thought is there may be shavings of aluminum let behind and you should change the oil after so many hours of run time.

  • @jeanettekettlewell
    @jeanettekettlewell Рік тому

    Ugh, neither I nor my (male) neighbor could get the oil filter off with a standard oil filter wrench. I need to buy a better one. Is the 3" cap style that is used with a ratchet a good bet for a not-too-strong female?

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  Рік тому +1

      I would suggest taking your new oil filter with you to a auto parts store and see if they have one that will fit the oil filter. To make sure you’re getting the correct wrench

      I will assume your engine is a single cylinder engine?? You need compression? spark? and fuel? to run. There are many different reasons why an engine will not start. If the engine cranks over? (as in the engine spins when you turn the key to crank position)This video may help you check a few things. ua-cam.com/video/JbwjMUNF6kg/v-deo.html. If your engine is trying to start but is missing and popping while trying to start? this video may help.ua-cam.com/video/Y4hWgv5OEYI/v-deo.html
