- This is an old video from years ago. The mock interview will still be helpful for preparing for a panel interview, but it's weird for me to look back at this as my work has evolved a long way. I still stand by recording your answers and watching the footage back, this is incredibly helpful.
Really good interview courses and one to one sessions are available on midwifediaries.com
These were very similar questions I got asked last year and got stuck because my mind just went blank, this is so helpful. I have 5 university interviews in the coming weeks, one in two days. I will be using this 3 times a day to help my confidence and answer a lot better too. :)
I realised whilst doing this that I say "ermm, ermm" way too many times, thanks for this practise run xx
Kiran Bi me too! Filling the gaps whilst my mind is blanking and waiting for my next thought to pop along 🤣
Haha me too! I was videoing myself on my phone whilst doing so and had to tell myself I'll come back to it 😂
This literally helped me a lot, I got unconditional offer after my interview thank you soo much
That was phenomenally helpful. Thank you so much. Questions that I thought I knew a clear answer to, I didn't! Its given me a lot of pointers of things to read up on and clarify in my mind. Really appreciate this.
It’s crazy how your mind goes blank even though you know the answers! Thanks so much for the practice, I’m going to keep going over this until my answers flow easily without the mind blank moments 🤣 I keep hearing about “your book” so I’m off to google what it’s actually called and where I can buy it.
Thank you again your videos are incredibly helpful and inspiring. ❤️
Found it, it’s arriving tomorrow!!! 😁😁😁
Thanks for making this video, I have my interview tomorrow and has been very helpful in helping me speak from the heart and not off my notes x
I actually learned a lot from this video about interviews !! I have to thank you for this opportunity of experiencing this without the "terror of rejection"... it was really helpful :)
Thank you so much! This is amazing and very helpful! I am a midwife from Greece who is currently applying and preparing for interviews and I feel I need all the help I can get because the system is different here. Thank you very much for these videos!
You are a star. Thank you so much for this! ❤️
Cannot tell you how much this has settled some of my nerves, I've got my first interview for midwifery this time next week and your videos have been a major help :)
did you get the job?
How was it?
Did you pass the interview? And get the job?
Thank you so much for uploading this Ellie!
It's exactly what I needed (:
Thanks Momo!
I am applying for midwifery in Sept 2016 - I have found this extremely helpful! I'm going to do more reading and pre-studying to prepare fore this - thank you.
Patsy Fryer Good luck Patsy, thanks for letting me know!

Thank you this video is so helpful for me ....
Hi Ellie, thank you for your blog, Facebook and UA-cam, so refreshing. Nice video. I have been practicing and feel less nervous now. I have applied after the deadline and still waiting. Please questions we can ask the interviewers. Thx
Wow, you hear the question and think its straight forward and then my brain just stops working :'D Thank You so much for this, it will seriously help me in the future because im gonna have to develop some sorta script to remember everything I would want to say correctly
Its cheeky, but could you do a video of good answers to some of those? Sound like cheating I know but what I mean is even if I think something I may not think its ok to say it, or there may be something really obvious people might miss
StampsOnSnails Hi,I haven't got a video on these answers (because it'd be a really long video, as any answers need lot of guidance on how to come up with a response that applies to your circumstance), but there's loads of good support to be found over on MidwifeDiaries.com, why not start with this free interview training: midwifediaries.com/essential-midwifery-interview-questions/
Also, my book has over 50 interview questions and sample answers, I've tried to write a book that I would have loved back when I was applying, you can find it here: @1502591782
It's a lot easier for me to give this kind of support in written form and it takes me a long time to put this kind of material together, hence why it's in my book at this point :)
I love this!
I have eye contact problems.
Wow this is great, thanks!
Hi! Thank you so much for this video it’s really insightful! What sort of questions should we be asking at the end of an interview?
Diamond A - I can't seem to reply directly to you, but in answer: I absolutely do have some book recommendations for you:
Anything by Michel Odent is a really good bet. I always liked the Labour and Birth Handbook, and Soo Downe's Normal Childbirth: Evidence and Debate is worth your time too.
Google books is a great way of reading without having to spend. This post might help for more academic resources online: midwifediaries.com/favourite-academic-resources/
Virginia Howes' book on being an Independent Midwife, a lighter read but still very useful info: www.amazon.com/The-Babys-Coming-Dedication-Independent/dp/1472211731
Sheena Bryom's book on challenges in modern NHS midwifery care: www.pinterandmartin.com/the-roar-behind-the-silence.html
Michel Odent's new book 'Do We Need Midwives?' www.amazon.co.uk/Do-Need-Midwives-Michel-Odent-ebook/dp/B00Y5OSWWA/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1434209823&sr=1-2&keywords=michel+odent
Hope this helps!
Got my interview in 30 mins!!!
Thank you you helped alot
Just wondering if you are offering 1 to 1 private sessions this year for interview preparation . ? I'm sure I have seen you do this in previous years x
Thanks for letting me know Kallia, good luck!
Thank u for this video it really helped, I am a gcse student who is thinking of becoming a midwife and was wondering if u could please give some responses to some of these questions, to help me gain a better understanding of midwifery in general. Thank you

Hope this helps!
Thank u so much that's really kind and helpful and congratulations on your book
Those answers were really helpful as I am clueless when it comes to the interview process and that gave me an really good idea of length e.t.c and the kinds of answers they are looking for
I'm so glad to hear that :)
Are These interview question what could come up in an interview or could there be other questions
Hi Ellie my name is Maira and I'm from Greece. I wanted as a child to become a midwife because I thought its like participating in a miracle two or more times a day. So now that I'm at the age of seventeen Im excited about my new beginning but I would like to ask you. I will study midwifery at Greece because my parents can't afford study in somewhere else but is something I could do after my studies here in Britain? I also find you very inspiring and I've watched all your videos (you're beautiful too) !!☺❤
what books do you recommend someone to read before deciding to become a midwife?
Hello, do you have answers for such questions that's gives us an idea that what I am saying is on the correct lines
hi Ellie,
The last question "What kind of event would you expect to see during a normal birth"? i'm struggling with. What sort of answer would you be looking for? Describing the birthing process? a relaxed atmosphere? As i dont think there is such a thing as a normal birth as each one is unique and you never know how things are going to turn out so im unsure how i would answer this. thanks for your advise
Souls Ultimatum HD Hi, the question is quite an open ended one as to a certain extent there is no 'correct' answer. As there is as you say no 'standard' normal birth. All the things you mentioned would be good to discuss. Really just take the question as an opportunity, a starting point for a discussion of birth, what's considered normal in our society (for example, is an epidural normal? what about an episiotomy? or forceps? what if the women truly believed she had a normal birth though she needed forceps to assist her - what would you say, as midwives' role in part is to promote normality?) It's just a starting point for you to showcase your knowledge around medicalisation and natural birth support. Hope this helps a bit!
Souls Ultimatum HD I've only attended TWO births.....both would NOT be considered normal.
1st birth 50+ hour first stage, only 30 min pushing. All in hospital.
2nd birth was at a home. Lasted only 7-8 hours total. Mother started speaking in Hebrew tongues as the baby crowned. Doula caught the baby since doctor came late.
Normal is boring.
what can you ask them in the end of the interview (4:45) because i am sure they would wanna hear your response after.
What is the student intake for this academic year?
Do you know how covid may affect studies for next year?
Hi Ellie, sorry to disturb but I am studying access to midwifery online and I recently had a problem with one assignment and my qualification it's going to have 57 credits instead of 60, there is no way I can re-submit it and I have already passed the test I am left with the interview, but I don't know what do to,because I dont knwo if the University will still accept me, what do you think I should do. have this ever happen to someone you knwo? and do you know what happend?
Thank you and sorry for such a long question
Hi Claudia, I'm curious to know if you managed to get into university despite being down 3 credits. I'm currently studying access to midwifery through DLC. Thanks xx
I am applying for midwifery this year and this sure helped a lot thank you! However I did quite get the question " What does natural birth mean to you?"
omg me too
I’m so scared
Also no idea what I'd say about coping with a miscarriage :(
Could you please send me the answer for these as soon as possible my interview is coming next Monday I have 2 days.
It’s very urgent could you please send me the answer for all these questions
You need to be genuine to be a carer. My advice is try and work on these to the best of your ability. Think about what you can bring to the course and profession.
I know the answers but i just seem to blank out
oh i just dont know what to say to these questions😭
I’m Polish myself and the Polish lady question threw me off
Hello i'm midwivery and nurse
you look like nina dobrev
