Brilliant. Just brilliant. Hand Jive is my favourite Scofield album - I have everything he released and its the one I return to most often. Like everybody here, I think Bill Stewart is an absolutely fantastic drummer. He is a well-kept secret - everybody knows Jack deJ and Tony W and Elvin J and Billy C... Bill is up there in that company. Himself and Dennis Irwin were a great team.
This gives the strength to keep on playing and to progress. They are all exceptional. Above all here, Sco lead us in the fifth dimension and Stewart follows him in an extraordinary world very far away. Doing like Eddie doesn't seem easy today.
I saw the quartet with Sco, Lovano, Irwin and Stewart in 1990 or 1991. And Sco’s introduction of Stewart was along the lines of : “ And on drums we have this freak of nature named Bill Stewart. Can someone explain to me how a red headed white dude from Iowa can be this funky? “
Bill is one of those iconic drummers that command attention in a song as much as the melody does. He always seems to be trying to make the song work, playing each song and not riffing around it or outside of it, his part is integral. I not a drummer, but I can hear that.
Jazz. The most flexible type of music. To have Bill Stewart play lead over the whole piece shows how dedicated toward equality this group of musicians are. Imagine Scofield, Harris, et. al. playing accompaniment to the drummer. Miles would smile.
Great balance...a magnificent and original Eddie as usual with his unique style, an equally original marvelous Bill Stewart, a solid Dennis, a great Hammond groove from Larry and Scofield's always innovative playing never taking the "normal" expected "road". A pleasure. No one is excessive or drowned in virtuoso boring jazz acrobatic "statements"...they all keep the groove with astonishing contribution...and that's what it is unique in this piece.
after watching this video more than 25 times, still amazing music, the solo of Eddie Harris en comping of Bill Stewart...So grateful for posting this wonderful live versions
They truly played this set well and jam They took it all the way home it was just funky jazz that on the game of being at it's best --Dunmore Music of Monee IL.

Now that's a jazz drummer. The listener never gets lost in the form even over the solo.
Hypnotic, these bad hombres are in deep.
REAL DRUMMERS ENERGY AND NEVER LOST TIMING...

Yes. I think you might be right. I don't know how else to describe this drumming. I'm glad I could hear this.
