I was wearing a really bright shirt today in my yard. I thought I saw a hummingbird until it decided to land on me and reveal it was a moth instead. I was super freaked out at first but after it left I was interested in what it was. So I looked it up and found this amazing video! Thanks for helping me learn something today.
There’s a bunch of these around my boyfriends house and at first I thought they were humming birds until I saw it’s little legs. I was freaked out and interested all at once!
@@AnimalFactFiles I first found a Clearwing dead on the road when I was a kid. Even though it was dead, We were intrigued . When I lost my Dad, I was invited on a trip to Branson. I was sitting outdoors listening to music when this rather large White lined Sphinx moth hoovered close by me after the pink Impatiens. The pink on it was so fascinating. I'll never forget it, it was a highlight of the trip. 5 people shouted " Look ! A hummingbird !!!". They would not hear me . One lady was angry I insulted it by calling it a moth. LoL !. When people use pesticides on everything, they target insects they don't even understand. Thanks for a good show.
I have actually seen one hummingbird moth today. At first, I was a little confused because there are no hummingbirds in my country and I was in the middle of the city. Thanks to a little google search I found this video. I love animals, great to learn something new.
I literally just realised that the hummingbirds that I was convinced I saw on a holiday in Ibiza over 40 years ago must have been hummingbird hawk moths!!
Be careful, feeding a lizard wild bugs could hurt your lizard. People who chemically treat their lawns, are why. The infected bugs will try to find a safe place. My Leopard gecko almost died from eating the bugs from my lawn. Just to be clear, my lawn is "mostly" organic
One of these was dining like crazy on our butterfly bushes. I had to take a closer look because from meters away it did indeed looked just like a humming bird. So since today I know what humming bird moths are. Awesome!
Literally seen one of these today for the first time ever in my garden I was fascinated by it as I'm from the UK it was quiet unusual to see a large hovering insect but amazing to see
Just saw one of these for the first time at my home near Sacramento, Ca. Hovering and feeding on honeysuckle blossoms, looking so much like the bird they're named after. 😍
My husband and I saw one yesterday for the first time ever in Cuenca, Spain! I had no idea there are no hummingbirds in Europe since we have quite a few in the US and in Brazil. I was fully convinced it was the smallest hummingbird ever but I was truly confused. A lavender bush full of beautiful honey bees and this beauty shows up and simply gave us a nice nature lesson!! 🦋
Encountered one of these this morning, looked and hovered so much like a Humming bird...amazing creatures , so beautiful, luckly I work in sugar rich environment and this thing was flying around vigorously feasting on the leaking sugar drinks, eventually it managed to find its way out of our warehouse.
Every year many different hummingbird moths visit my butterfly bushes each day! It is fascinating to watch them as they go from bloom to bloom. They are beautiful and I love having them in my garden!
These are so cool! I saw a few of them and thought they were baby hummers. I took pics, researched and to my shagrin, I was surprised to see it was a Sphinx moth. My husband thought it was a bee. I enjoyed your explanation of this fascinating species of moth. We were BOTH wrong. So cool. Thank you.
Every day just about at dawn and dusk when its twilight roughly, there is a bug or a bird that flys up by my porch and harasses the hell out of me. It sounds like a hummingbird but it moves to fast to see. All I know it makes me jump out my chair when it buzzes around my head and then it disappears. It does this 3-5 times before it leaves me alone. Thanks to this video I think I know that it's a hummingbird moth creature.
I saw one yesterday for the first time, I believe ▬ and I am over 60! I quickly got my camera and videoed it for a few moments and sent it out to an email to friends to see what it was. Some of them knew it was a hummingbird moth and that led me here. That curled proboscis threw me for a loop on whether it was a bird, or an insect. I had seen the catepillar before. Yes, after it sipped the nectar, it buzzed around me head a few times and then another one appeared and they flew off together. Thank you for his post! Now I know.
@@AnimalFactFiles It sure was an experience! I will post my low-tech video (but in 1080p HD) to UA-cam tonight and put the link here. It was hard to focus but I did get a couple of good focuses in my 1 minute video. I didn't have time to set up a tripod because I wanted to make sure I got it. The one I saw LQQKS just like the one @3:08 in your video.
I saw one not long ago and i honestly thought it was a hummingbird..Which is strange because they don't live in my country but i didn't know such moth exists..
At 5:30 am this morning I came out to my back yard as I do every morning to enjoy my cup of coffee. I enjoyed not just 1 but 4 hummingbird moths at around 1-1/2 inches They were smaller in size as the night before there were 2 larger hummingbird moths at around 2-1/2 inches on my bush. But not only was I able to enjoy the 3 smaller moths as one flew off a green hummingbird showed up to also feed from the flowers on my bush. The hummingbird moths here at my house show up at dusk & feed off these bushes all night & leave at dawn. There’s at least 1 to 2 here every night. I must of gotten very lucky as I’ve never seen more than 2 at the same time & this morning there were 4 plus the hummingbird also showed up. What a great way to start my day. I did also get the hummingbird with 2 of the hummingbird moths in a video I took.
Been trying to figure out what this was flying in the bush at my shop every day. There are blackfaced wasps/hornets in that same bush and bumblebees are always there. This thing amazed me. It was black and yellow
This video is misleading, hummingbird hawk moths belong to a family of moths called hawk moths (also sphinx moths in America), it is a single species. Horn worms is a general American name used to describe hawk moth caterpillars, however the commercial horn worms you buy to feed your pets are definitely NOT hummingbird hawk moths. Goliath worms are one of the most common caterpillars you can buy and they are the tobacco hawk moth (Manduca sexta).
I saw those in Swat in 2001. I initially thought they were humming birds but off course my father corrected me that those are humming moths. We don't even have humming birds there. But these moths were plentiful.
They still do. About 30 years ago when I lived in Pakistan, we had them visit our Pomegranate flowers. I saw them only a couple times. And it would come and go so fast I hardly could make what it was. It was fascinating, iridescent and dark with colors on it. The wings flapped so fast it could hardly be seen. Never knew what it was until I learned about hummingbirds and then I knew it must have been a hummingbird. That's why I can't believe when it is said that hummingbirds are not found outside of Americas. I looked up hummingbird hawk and sunbird which showed up in my search on the topic but they definitely don't ring true to what I saw. I think it most like it most likely was a bee hummingbird sine they were teeny and disappeared so fast.
At a sleep away camp that I used to go to I had a traumatic experience where I was playing with the moths and letting them sit on my hand and I noticed that one had got stuck. I was confused and thought it was stuck between two flower stems. I got closer to try to set it free and it was a pray mantis! It was eating it’s face off! I screamed and stumbled back. That was a harsh reminder of the circle of life... Also, I have Mottephobia. I’m terrified of regular moths. Where I live there’s a moth infestation l. I’m on always on edge at night. But I remember these moths and how I used to play with them. They make me a little less scared. Thanks for both helping me and traumatizing me. 🤣
We've seen some pretty gruesome praying mantis attacks while out and about. Makes my skin crawl. I can completely relate. Glad you enjoyed the video even if it was a little freaky for you!
I get them every year! I wish I could show my pictures! Last year a tan & grey one always came by. This year around 7:00 almost every day, I see a bright green & burnt orange one. I make sure to move all caterpillars to the back yard where I don't garden!
Found one today in germany for the first time. It was also able to get really close and capture it on my very old phone, which wasnt able to capture the true speed of their wings so it looks kinda like normal flapping xD
Another fact that fits here is that it is sometimes possible to buy pins that used to be living tobacco horn worms but they have had all the water in their body removed and replaced with plastic!
I saw one last night on my phlox. yes, I was fooled. after not finding any picture of a hummingbird that small in NY, ! I saw the moth in one of the articles. I was amazed . it was flying around the flowers just like the hummers.
I have a hummingbird hawk moth pupa named Birdie. He's due to come out soon.. I think.. I caught birdie, thinking they were a type of other moth. After researching, I found out that they were a hummingbird hawk moth.
I just saw one this evening. It was flying around me while I was watering my tree. I didn’t know what it was, do I was spraying it with water so it would fly away. It just stayed a few feet a away. So, I ran inside lol.
I saw one here in Maine that was black-and yellow-white stripe and look like an oversized bumblebee and I was like oh my God that's the craziest hummingbird I've ever seen I thought I was witnessing something Majestic

I often see a hummingbird moth feeding on a verbena near my porch. I have also seen one hovering around my yellow bird feeder. Could it be that the yellow color attracted the moth? I thought it was eating bird seed. Maybe it was just looking for nectar.
Nice video. It is worth noting that some of the footage is of a White-lined sphinx. I have been aware of hummingbird moths since I was a kid but now I understand why I saw one yesterday around a honeysuckle bush. I will have to watch for caterpillars.
They look like absolute fairies!! ❤❤❤
Imagine being a unicorn as a baby, and a hummingbird as an adult. What a blessed creature. ♡

That's probably good luck idk
Same here but it didn't land on me :(

I love seeing these little gems in my garden!
My beardie loves hornworms. I got her one once, but it pupated before I could give it to her. It hatched into a lovely hawk moth!
I have seen over 1000 of them in my village but I didn't know their name

Those also fly around like hummingbirds, flying around checking multiple flowers from the same branch before sipping from one, kinda picky

So cool you got to see one in real life!
Hey neighbor!! Just saw one in Elk Grove, CA today. Had to come watch a video on it!
1:40 "honey suckle & bee balm" honeysuckle is my favorite flower
I once had two hornworm caterpillars on my tomato plant
This is cool to know what they hatched into!
Glad you learned something new!!
That’s actually a different hornworm.
GOD DAMMIT JERRY THAT'S A MOTH

I get these in my yard at night during the summer because they love the nectar from the Angel's Tears plant I've got.

I seen one. Startled me! Years ago at our property. I'd never heard of them. Amazing experience ❤❤❤
I literally thought I had discovered a new species lol 😂
Me too
Saw these recently and thought they were hummingbirds, when i got closer i noticed the antennas and got confused lol
They are a giveaway!

Thank you so much for this video ❤ i spotted one yesterday on my plants and i was confused on what i saw 😂

61 years old and have never even heard of these, then saw one!!
just saw one today with our humming bird here in Canada
I always thought they weren't true moths but actually butterflies.
Beautiful and informative video
First time I saw one today. I was like WTF! And my co-worker said it was a hummingbird. I said it was a moth... Now we know...
a hummingbird really went crazy on a moth one night 💀
I have been seeing these fly around for awhile I was like how do this big moth fly so fast 😳
One time I was at work and talking to a coworker. When a hummingbird moth flew by then reversed and hovered by my mouth. I closed my mouth so it wouldn’t fly into my mouth. It hovered by my mouth for a while then flew off. I told my coworker it was a hummingbird moth.
The difference is that they have antennas on top of head, in comparison to hummingbird. However, is good that they don't eat the carpet
it looks like a keychain plush
I live in America and I saw a hummingbird hawkmoth when I was a child.
Tha'ts awesome!
I saw one today! So interesting!
What an awesome sighting!
The weird thing is that I saw one of the moth hummingbird thing in Canada?! They only live in Eurasia as I've red
We use to think this is an actual hummingbird and would try to catch it when we are young
I live in Japan and saw this today very closely for the first time and I always thought it was a big bee 😂 so I took a video and I was so surprised to see it look like a mini bird :o it’s so cute. We don’t have in Italy so I was amazed when I saw her/him ❤
I saw one today it was glorious.
Ah so it was a moth
I thought it was some type of bee
Never knew it was that Caterpillar
I love these .!!!! 💯
I saw some in Canada for a couple years.
I did see a few of them a few years ago in Italy.
Its wierd how 5 yo me who lives in europe had the same hummingbird mixup as litteraly everyone who saw this animal
I've always called these Hawk Moths!
They also like the Phlox flowers.
I literally never knew these things existed
I often see a hummingbird moth feeding on a verbena near my porch. I have also seen one hovering around my yellow bird feeder. Could it be that the yellow color attracted the moth? I thought it was eating bird seed. Maybe it was just looking for nectar.
Nice video. It is worth noting that some of the footage is of a White-lined sphinx. I have been aware of hummingbird moths since I was a kid but now I understand why I saw one yesterday around a honeysuckle bush. I will have to watch for caterpillars.
Oh thanks for pointing that out! Could you give some timestamps where the video is the white-lined sphinx? Thanks for watching!
