  • On a tip from a fellow camper, I set off to discover the joys and the challenges of camping on a beach in February. Rutherford Beach is 45 minutes south of Lake Charles Louisiana. I also share two more recipes from my viewers!

Slim Potatohead. One of those people that nobody doesn't like. One of the very few YT producers that makes me smile as soon as I get the notification. After watching the morning news from Ukraine, I needed that distraction. Thank you Slim and others like you who help cheer us up.

Not only are you going to find salt on/in your vehicles, you’re going to find blown sand in nooks and crannies for months or years. I learned the hard way driving a top down convertible on those beaches.
I liked your soup experiments. I think using Campbell’s tomato in the fast soup recipe might give both speed and a better flavor and consistency. Thanks as always for taking us along with you.

I grew up in SW Louisiana and visited Rutherford beach many times in the late 1960's - early 1970's. I am surprised it still exists, as many powerful hurricanes slammed that area since then. I suppose the state built the beach back up. Most often the water was chocolate in color and the beach strewn with seaweed and waste from oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

I love that beach! I live in Florida & drove out to Texas to pick up a Casita Travel Trailer I bought from the factory. I camped there on the way back to Florida. I intended to stay just one night but ended up staying 3 nights because I loved it so much. And I loved that I could see both the sunrise & the sunset on the Gulf there. I don't know if you can see both year-round there but in January you could.

I earlier told you about the Julia Child method of cooking pasta, but I have since thought I should really tell you about my very favorite backpacking meal, made using that method. Tortellini. Cooked that way it takes very, very little both water and fuel. When done I would squeeze in a good dollop of olive oil and then some dried basil and Parmesan cheese, the dry kind in a can, toss it up, and it is an incredible delicacy on the trail or in the trailer.

I haven't camped near the ocean, but during a rain storm I pulled off by a wayside next to a sm river that was 20 feet away an hour later I was in the river🥺. Recipe 1 pkg Ramin, add fresh green veggies 1st, ( asparagus, pea pod, ect, ) then add noodles, when noodles are done add...whipped egg add to soup then spice and stir. 1 pot, 10 minutes tops. 😋

I would love to see a video on what your whole set up and tear down is like.....I have little annoying questions like "during that wind storm did you take down your signal boost at midnight" do you bring in your steps and chair at night for fear of them being stolen......Do you leave the collaspable water jug for your shower under your trailer the whole time once you set up your shower......and how long to do you typically leave your shower up to let it dry

    • @SlimPotatohead
      @SlimPotatohead  2 роки тому +2

Wow, lots of questions! The antenna stayed up during wind, while chair gets tucked away during storms. Jug usually only out when in use. Shower basin can be squeegeed but curtains are outside in sun to dry or shaken if too humid. Thanks! SP

It made me nervous that you were the only one parked that close to the water with your trailer. Then when the winds came up in the night I thought....if the tide comes up or a couple of rogue waves hit...you might find yourself floating in the Gulf. I have seen several vehicles get stuck and the water came up and sucked them out to where they were ruined.
Outherwise....love the videos...they're uplifting during these trying times.

Is your jeep four-wheel-drive? And did you think you needed to use four-wheel-drive to be on that beach reason? I ask if I go there I have a 2 Wheel Dr. pick up truck with my Casita camper. I’ve been on the beach just east of Galveston Island in Texas, and really didn’t have any fear of getting stuck because the sand was so packed. The beach you were on looks like it may have not been packed as much as the Texas beach. I never knew there was a beach you could drive on in Louisiana and I have spent a lot of time in Louisiana just never found that spot Probably drove right in by several times. Thanks for the great video and the soup recipes I’m a solo traveler. Also, those recipes will come in handy.

Thanks for the reply. I try to stay away from Walmarts as much as possible that’s for sure. Only stayed in the Walmart parking lot one time it was horrible and I do not shop at Walmart. They are horrible.
I’m getting as much out of my 2 Wheel Dr. pick up truck as possible I did not intend on pulling a camper with it and going off road. The camping was an afterthought. My truck is a 2013 with 228,000 exploring miles on it so far , it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down as of yet I would love to go buy a brand new $58,000 four-wheel-drive pick up truck. But I’m 860 days from retirement and a full pension. I’ll buy a truck just before I retire, and hopefully pay more than cash. I’m really enjoying your videos and the places you’ve traveled are giving me lots of ideas for new places. I’m leaving Michigan after Thanksgiving to head down to Texas.
For possible work, then over to Arizona in a crossing to Mexico for some dental work. Then back to Texas hopefully for three month long job. your videos really are appreciated good job!!!

I laughed out load to see the man from Canada freezing his buns off on a Louisiana beach. I’m surprised, living at a trailer with limited energy resources, i.e. bro pain, that you don’t use the “Julia Child“ method of cooking pasta. Basically bring the water to a boil, stir in the pasta, bring it back to a boil, then put it on the lid and turn off the burner. Let it just soak in the hot water for 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the type of pasta. I find the dried tortellini tends to take about 20 minutes or so. I have found that you can add a lot of flavor by adding some sort of seasoning or flavoring or even some bullion to the soaking water. In this case I can imagine essentially cooking the pasta in the V8, maybe with just a little bit of added water,. I may actually try that in the next day or two.

My favorite pasta is angel hair. It's delicate and cooks very quickly. I would have substituted or added tomato paste to thicken the soup. It is fun to experiment. I do enjoy watching SP prepare these recipes sent in by viewers. I do not enjoy watching tv chefs cook complicated dishes. I could live on pintoes, cheese and cornbread.

Yes that is a nice comparison but l'd rather thunk of them being very complementary ships who are passing in the night.....each makes wonderful complements. I think David would really enjoy watching Slim....maybe brothers with different mothers!! 🤗

Had you cooked the pasta in the tomato soup, it would have been thicker from the starch of the pasta (I'm thinking).

Discovery Channel needs to give Slim his own show. I like it the way it is though. No huge budget. I'm really hoping to see him do more backcountry, more northern Manitoba, more Yukon and NWT.

Isn't that the most beautiful sunset of Gods art. To experience it in person would be greater if I could. Safe travels Slim. Glad you are enjoying yourself. 🤗🤓

The weather people say we get those beautiful southern sunsets from the wind coming off of Africa, bringing the desert dust high into the atmosphere and the sun reflects off of that.

A variation on a satay sauce that sounds interesting. I've always liked Campbell's soups often accompanied by a cheese sandwich, so I'd probably leave the cheese in the sandwich. Then, I'd try adding some fresh ginger as well as the chilli 😋 That may be my Queensland taste buds. Ginger is grown commercially here. Something to try next winter.

My father used to make 'soup' from v8. It stank up the house horribly!
