I did this crossing on the Tatershall in 1974 as a teenager. Fifteen years later, I was having a drink on her on the River Thames completely unaware that it was the same vessel. Thanks so much for posting this footage.
Ken, thats a really lovley film. It bring back some fond memories of going to Hull with my mother and Grandmother when I was a child. Thanks for posting it.
This is wonderful and brings back so many happy memories of visiting my Grandma & Grandad in Hull and we'd sometimes have a day out in Cleethorpes taking the Humber ferry. The 'voyage' was always the highlight of the day for me and the footage gave me such warm feelings. Thank you. I am slowly uploading my Grandad's cine films to YT and many of them are around Hull & the Humber and also feature the ferries.
Remember going on those ferries across the a River to New Holland with my Dad who was born in Lincolnshire. You could go down the engine room and watch the it perform and have a cup of tea ect. Everything was brass,or so it seemed and loads of blokes commuted on bicycles. New holland had a train platform and we went to Various towns in Lincs to visit family.
It's very nice when people like yourself are transported back thru' the years from seeing something on a video posted by somebody, (in this case me).....thankyou for viewing and commenting.
I can remember cycling with some of my family from Grimsby to New Holland than going on the ferry to Hull and continued to cycle through Hull to the William Wilberforce museum and onwards to Spurn Point one summer when I was about 9 yrs old (now 63 yrs old). I think the ferries were Tattershall Castle and Lincoln Castle.
Tattershall Castle! We went on a school trip on this Ship it was chartered for ours and other schools from Derbyshire, we went Via Steam train to Immingham and Paddle steamer to Hull with a bit of a detour out to sea. Came home via Cleethorpes on a bus.Never forget it!
Thanks for viewing and I'm pleased it brought back some happy memories. I'm only sorry the image quality isn't great....I inherited from a mate of mine who passed away about 12 years ago, he was a cine and steam enthusiast and this he took on one of his trips.....it's about the second copy, unedited and transferred from tape to tape, to disc and then to UA-cam.
Thank you, this brings back fond memories 😃of a school trip on the Ferry across the Humber when I was about 7yrs old, which would be 1952. I don't recall the name of the vessel. Does anyone know if it is the same class of vessel as the Waverly?
wow so enjoyed this footage love those old ferries eh.... took me back as we used to go on the frerry but always got off before it went anywhere hahaha we never had a ticket me n brother aged abhout 7.. the horn used to scare us to death...
Thanks for viewing Mark, the film was taken by an old friend of mine who passed away a few years ago. On the same reel of film is "Lickey Incline" also on UA-cam.
I'm sorry Anthony, I have no idea, the film was made by a friend of mine who I'm sorry to say passed away about twelve years ago and I don't think he left any details about the contents of the movie.
Ok. I just did tome research and i can now confirm that these are the paddlesteamers i mentioned. One is the Wingfield Castle (in this videos thumbnail) as seen four minutes in. this one is in my home town hartlepool another (with the wires on the funnel) is the tattershall now stationed in london on the river thames opposite the millenium wheel. the last one is the lincoln (the longest) this was scrapped in 2007. Thank you Ken and to your friend *lord rest him* for this footage. I have been looking for a video of these ships in service for a long time! Thank you so much!
Anthony, very pleased you were able to successfully find out more about the ships in the film.....I'm sure my old mate would have been highly delighted that his 8mm home movie has proved so entertaining. The music's mine by the way.Anthony Layton
