Now I see why Chumbawamba took the EMI contract. They must have figured that if EMI was so incredibly daft as to offer a bunch of anarchists who close a song singing "Harry Roberts" in the style of "Hare Krishna," then they deserved everything they would get. (And damn it, could they ever write a hook. I've been listening to this on a loop.)
No mate your not getting old, every day I wake to ' The day the nazi died' it reminds me of the values I've carried for so long, we should never rest til every Nazi dies!
I recall picking up and buying a crusty-punk 7" compilation with a few bands on it, named Bare-Faced Hypocrisy Sells Records. However, at the time of Chumbawamba's brief relationship with EMI, I met a good woman, got married, had a few kids, and put every penny into raising our family. As I couldn't afford to purchase singles & albums, I had no option but to opt out of music until they were a little older and things weren't so tight. Basically, I kept tags on my two favourites, Go-Kart Mozart and Hard Skin, and avoided being tempted by anything else. Did Chumbawamba take EMI for as much as possible and then call it a day? Or did they plod on with an indie label for a while? And did the crusties kiss and make up with them? Or was it an eternal parting of the ways? Just bought my first vinyl in years last weekend. It's been a long, long, time.
I think System of a Down is like the U.S.A. counterpart to Chumbawamba, because almost all of their songs are sociopolitical, and they likewise present them in very goofy and/or cheeky manner. I don't know if System of a Down are anarchists, but their lyrics make it pretty clear that they support at least the downfall of the current social structure in the U.S.
well then heres a couple artists i really like. :) Ryan Harvey-global economy. he's an anarchist folk singer i really like. Tom Frampton-a song of unapologetic optimism. And Harry Roberts was the name of a Policeman shot dead by babkrobbers in the 70s, Leeds United football fans used to chant that at police during football matches....
James Loughran Harry Roberts was the guy who shot and killed 2 policemen, he spent 48 years in jail and came out last year. The football fans chant his name as they dont like the coppers.
they certainly were pacifists but they are pretty explicit about shifting their politics to supporting more militant tactics after the miners strike. And i certainly disagree that violence can't be used as a tool of resistance, the history of revolution and autonomous resistance bears this out, but we can certainly disagree as to whether it is always used strategically, and probably agree that not everyone is going to be down for it
a violent criminal that killed two policemen, Chumbawumba obviously think killing innocent men with wives and children is cool and something to be celebrated!
I like the Beatles' nods in this -- the trumpet solo is taken note for note from the Revolver album's "For No One" while repeating the words "Harry Harry" mimics George Harrison's use of "Hari Hari" in "My Sweet Lord".
the whole album was supposed to be a Chumba-ised version of Beatles songs, except the Beatles/Apple objected, so they rewrote them all (I seem to remember). I'm glad they did, cos the album is far more interesting than an album of Beatles songs with cheeky lyrics
they are singing 'Harry Roberts' in the style of the Hare Krishna chant, Harry Roberts murdered some innocent policemen and Chumbawumba think that's cool and glorified him in a song!
It was only recently I heard For No One by the Beatles for the first time - I had always the trumpet solo was a Chumbawamba composition! Chumba use it better though
The Shhh album was originally called Jesus H Christ and it was entirely used up them playing parts of other people's songs and mashing them together. No one they approached agreed without getting 100% profits from the song, making it untenable. They had to reimagine the entire album, though did leave in as much of the pinching as possible.
Try to find MP3's of their unreleased single "Hat Trick For Harry"..... the b-side is a very long, INCREDIBLY BIZARRE remix of this song that is just too nightmarish and creepy for words. (A snippet of the remix popped up as a hidden track on 'Uneasy Listening', but the rest of it remains unreleased.)
Sends a horrible chill down my spine when they start chanting 'Harry Roberts'! For anyone who doesn't know, Roberts and two of his criminal gang gunned down three innocent police officers because they were about to discover the gang had guns on them. It would seem he's being celebrated by these lyrics. Heartbreaking!
Yes, I agree. My neighbour is the widow of one of the Police officers that was murdered. It’s not appropriate to include his name in this song, it’s very wrong.
Is that the one with Jaime, Cersei and Tyrion Lannister happily dancing through the ruins of season eight? The ending that was promised. ua-cam.com/video/0QDKLglEP5Y/v-deo.html
Mind blowing when one thinks how rare and precious organic life is in the Universe. In that sense everybody is really great. Sad the lack of attention makes everybody behave so bad through thinking. Don't think sarcasm helps though.

I think what I find the MOST addicting about a lot of their stuff is their sarcastic use of major key.

Thank you for posting this wonderful album. PLEASE post them all. Thank you. Andrew from Vancouver Island.
It just clicked in my head the Harry Roberts is the Hare Krishna mantra, hahaha what an insanely eclectic eccentric group of folks.
That is why this band is brilliant. This song is even noted on the Harry Roberts Wiki page.
And Harry Roberts was the name of a Policeman shot dead by babkrobbers in the 70s, Leeds United football fans used to chant that at police during football matches....

Mike Norledge . Yup suppose your right . Good bad old harry .. did spend excessive amounts of time in gaol though . Bit unfair .

Slava the world. Chumbawumba.

I grew up on loads of different music, but mostly KMFDM and Chumbawamba. It all really helped me make sense of living in North America.

Nope -- you got it. From "For No One" from the Revolver album.
