One of those songs that you don't give any thought to and when you hear it you know every word and love the tune. The Depeche Mode reference is really, that was the sound at the time. I really like it
"We Don't Need ( This Fascist Groove Thang) from the Penthouse And Pavement album is my favourite Heaven 17 track! Martin Ware has a great podcast about the music of the era.
You know that scene in Reservoir Dogs, where Chris Penn realises for the first time what the song, The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia is really about?.....yeah.
Thank-you for reacting to that - on my birthday!!! It is a less immediate kind of song than "Temptation" and as for the subject matter... well, if you were to write that today I'm pretty sure it'd have to begin "I was forty-seven you were twenty-three" but the story would still stand, a bloke chasing after his youth starts a relationship which inevitably ends in his rejection as she goes off to pursue the life she had been living previously
Happy Birthday, Janine! 😊🍾🥂🎂🎉 They'd probably chosen 17 as her age because that number's also in their band name 🙂 The older one of my Sons is 17 right now; Not sure if I'd be too chuffed if a 37-year-old woman was pursuing him, and he probably neither 😅
Its a reference to Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita, hes meant to be a nod to the main character whis obsession with a teenage girl eventually destroys her. In the video it looks like she took her own life. And at the very end hes reminiscing on his past and his regrets
For a " Who Did It Better ? " I recommend The original Are Everything by The Buzzcocks with the Heaven 17 cover. I think you two will like the tracks ! Thanks 😊
@Hanier Family: Do NOT do a 'Who Did It Better?' with Blue Oyster Cult's original of 'Don't Fear The Reaper' in comparison with the cover versions by either Heaven 17 or The Mutton Birds, though! 👎😄
Check out Dead Boys - Ain't It Fun and Sonic Reducer. Vocalist Stiv Bator was great. Later sang in Lords Of The New Church. They had a very big hit with Open Your Eyes. Still very relevant these days
@@CAdams6398 because, a. I couldn't be bothered because b. I left a full explanation of where the name comes from in a previous Hanier Family, Heaven 17 reaction. I even allude to the scene where it's mentioned. Like with Monty Python....and a few other, films, I know virtually the whole script verbatim. I love Kubrick's movies.
The memories of this were of.a better time back in 83 my favourite year chart wise .This band always used to throw me being 12 then kind of pop but.sort of industrial in a grown up way. There was more variety then compared to the rubbish that comes out now
Thanks for the name check, Hanier Family! I suppose this wasn’t as strong a track as ‘Temptation’ (it was the follow-up release to that song), certainly not to someone who isn’t particularly into the group. It’s only in the last few years that I’ve become aware of the accompanying promo video, which passed me by at the time.
And I was surprised to hear my name among those who'd requested this song, as I'd never heard it before today either! 😅 Which might've been just why I'd voted for it too, though 😉 Not bad, but didn't exactly grab me either, I admit. Unlike their 'Let Me Go' 😊👍
If you're doing comparisons then what about, God Gave Rock And Roll To You, by Argent (the original) and Kiss' cover (that many people think is the original, due to Gene Simmons claiming on an obscure rock radio station, that he wrote it, thinking his lie would never be discovered).
Not sure about Depeche Mode but I think it has a definite Human League feel/sound. A couple of better(in my view) tracks to react to would be 'Penthouse and Pavement ' - the bass!! and (We don't need that)Fascist Groove Thang. keep up the good work guys
The album version is so much better. It was always meant to be just an album track, but it was so good that it was released as a single - but then "edited" (butchered) for the radio. Pity!
Great song takes me back to being 17 again, so many great bands

I really like it
Once Again thank you for playing one of my tunes
I love this track. That synth bass.....

Thanks for playing the suggestion,
Loved that tune as a 14 year old 😊

Vicky Laurence .. Remember Gladys & her Pips catching the midnight train 🚆 to Georgia !

Sounds like the Maggie May story.
@@mightyV444You're very right 😆 And I'd never made that 17 connection before
Happy Birthday!

She left him and he was devastated . She grew up and wanted to see more life as is only right but he felt left behind and shattered 👍🏴

The great thing about Open Your Eyes, is how relevant it was when released.
The sad thing about Open Your Eyes, is that it still is.
Fun fact* They got their name from the nightclub in the film 'Clockwork Orange'.
Incorrect.
@@timholder6825 My mistake. From a fictional band in the film. Why didn't you correct me?
I imagine you looked it up. 🤔

@timholder6825 Well i could quote virtually the complete works of Monty Python, along with my all time favourite film 'Withnail And I myself!

I too remember '83 as a great year, in Music and also otherwise 😊
This was a slight departure for them , their slow dance offering and tbh I loved it 👍🏴

We've done a video for that one also. Very interesting stuff.

Can l run a song by you to see if you know it
Nobody's diary by Yazoo

It is half of the original Human League lineup, so will definitely have a similar sound.
I'm pretty sure 17 x 2 = 34 and not 37 😅

We don't need that fascist groove thing, is another Heaven 17 banger.
