Let’s be honest, the British top 10 could easily be world top 10 particularly for the rock genre. Nearly everyone would put Rolling Stones, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, Black Sabbath (Metal) etc
Never Queen. That’s for Broadway show tunes loving musical theater people.

I remember as a 33 year old bawling my eyes out down the phone to my mum when Freddie died. She died herself 7 months later, broke my heart. Love you mum xx
I emphasise with you. I’m 66 and an ex rugby prop and we are supposed to be tough, but seeing you crying reminded me of losing my father. I was 32 and my first daughter was born 9 days before he died. Still, 34 years later, I still cry and grieve for my father, the big strong special service soldier. It never gets easier. Fab videos.

I wasn't expecting to cry with you today (but it was extremely therapeutic, I've had a head full of stress all day). I guess when you're nine albums in, it would have been impossible to fully edit that out, but I'm glad you didn't try. And I'm sorry for your loss, it's been a rough few years (7 years really) here for my family so I can sympathise, although I can't imagine doing it so far from 'home'. I'm really proud that you chose the UK and although it maybe hasn't always been perfect, I hope we've shown you kindness when you needed it most. We're lucky to have you here.

Thank you for being so open about your loss. I lost my father last year and it's difficult to deal with such a loss. Music, although it can be confrontational, does help. He loved music, all sorts and he passed that love on to me. We both, actually the whole family saw Pink Floyd on their last tour where they played the Dark Side album in its entirety. Great memories. The Dark Side of the Moon is certainly one of my absolute favourites. Feel free to make a whole seperate video about it. 😁

I don’t often comment on videos but this was your best one imo. Your dad had great taste in music. I bought Queens Greatest Hits for my own daughter on vinyl 2 Christmas’s ago when she was 14. She loves Queen. Their music is timeless and as you say crosses generations. Brilliant video.
I just want to say, I've been watching your vids for a long time, this one got me, my dad past away on my 14th birthday and yes he did play a lot of music' specially old time reggae, I have a special dad playlist on Spotify to which I still play to this very day... big love to ya ♥️

Losing a parent never really heals, it just becomes part of who you are. I mark my parents birthdays, each year, by either listening to some of their favourite music or watching one of their favourite movies.
I'm lucky enough to still have my Mum, but I love the idea of listening to some of my Dad's favourite music on his birthday. Will pinch your idea - thanks! 😎👍

The same thing happens to me when I hear certain songs that remind me of my mum.

Wow! This has to be my all-time absolute favourite video you've done to date! Well thought out, absorbing, enlightening, articulate and beautifully expressed. You've inspired me to maybe get back to listening to music again, starting with these 10 albums. Just an excellent video. (I lost my dad at 27 and there is music that he liked that I still can't listen to even now, decades later. I'm so sorry for your loss, but very much appreciated your honest emotion.)

I must warn you! - the older you get, the more music hits you in the feels.
I’m a 61 year old 🇨🇦 and am not ashamed to say that I can no longer listen to songs like Vincent (Don McLean) or Fire and Rain (James Taylor) + many others without the tears coming.
I don’t consider this a bad thing at all.
Just music as an art form doing what art does best - reaching the soul.

Getting towards the end I was thinking this was a fantastic video and she's really smashed this one out of the park, but I wasn't prepared for what you were about to say about #1. I lost my mum a few years ago who was a Queen fan too and now I have tears rolling down my face for the first time in a long time. You're videos are just getting better and better, absolutely superb 👍.
My Dad was serving in the Falklands war when I was born. Brothers In Arms reminds him about his mates that he lost and when he hears it he always looks up to the sky and says this is for you mate. For me, it's a reminder that I could never even known my Dad. My godfather is one of those that never came back.
I'm an old grizzled bloke but the Queen stuff hits hard, took me back to memories of my Mam, I never thought I'd shed a tear watching Alana but here we are.
Queen are overrated asf and musically garbage except for maybe Brian may on one song of theirs
I loved your video, Alana... It just got me thinking again about my own loss of a father in my teens and how those sharing musical experiences with your parents live forever and bring them back into your life... Thanks and take care... x
What a fantastic video. I've never watched you before but just subscribed. My dad passed away in 2020 from cancer. I was 43 at the time so in a kind of birth/life/death realist mindset about it. He spent his final 2 weeks in our house being nursed by my amazing wife, who for some time he struggled to accept, and to be honest was flat out disrespectful to. Over time he saw what I had seen from the beginning in the "foreign girl" who is 10 years younger than me (he had a very old-school upbringing in the English midlands). We've been together 14 years now and have 2 beautiful children. My dad was an amazing, funny, and ultimately selfless family man. The thing that brings me to tears now is the memory of those final 2 weeks, and of the mutual respect being silently communicated between my wife and my dad. I see a man once so terrified of losing his dignity now almost embracing the humiliation of being cared for as a means to live that little bit longer around those he loves. I see our whole family pulling together around him and holding back the grief so that the final sounds he heard were our usual banter and laughter. Most of all I see my wife (who is not a professional carer) giving my father the most peaceful, respectful, and ultimately forgiving ending he could possibly have wished for. I love that woman! My dad brought me up on Dire Straights. I totally get that BIA can be a struggle, but I would emplore you to watch their Alchemy Live performance of Telegraph Road. This list is acutally the ten British albums which have sold the most copies in Britain, counting down from number ten, 'Adele 25' to number one, 'Queen's Greatest Hits I'

You can always rely on the bad taste of the masses.
That makes a lot of sense. Popular is not always best. I have no particular gripe with any of the albums on this list, I just think that there are often better examples of these groups talents. For instance, IMHO, "Love Over Gold" is a much better Dire Straits album. Also, being a teen in the 70s, had I been compiling a list, I would have included "Crime Of The Century" by Supertramp and "Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield and what about "Songs From The Big Chair" by Tears For Fears.

This is my first video of yours I’ve seen and what a lovely story about queen and your dad. Music can do that to you like nothing else can in terms of striking a memory and immediately you flood back to a period of your life and the emotion just hits you. Something came up on Spotify that I had heard a million times as a kid when my parents were together, but I hadn’t heard for 20 years, and I wouldn’t have ever thought to search for it, and it’s not my usual bag, but it was the Carpenters, Yesterday Once More. And I immediately just bawled my little eyes out remembering as a 28 year old what it had been like being 7 years old and not having a care in the world 😭plus the song subject itself seems to be pretty much that exact same thing, and man everything just aligned
I really loved this one, thank you! So insightful and emotional with you sharing your personal connection to some songs and artists. Would love to see you do some more music related content. I've probably got or had about 3/4 of these albums. Never been a massive Adele fan. I like some of her songs, but the thought of listening to a whole album feels a bit much. My favorite overall on the list is probably Rumours.
Haven’t made a comment on your channel for a couple of years because you get so many now is amazing how you channel has grown so firstly congratulations I remember those times when you lost your dad and went back to Canada back home and still you made some content in that hard time for us to follow…….but I just wanted to say music is the key of life and it is more powerful than people imagine how important it is to us all,I had a stroke 2 years ago so can no longer work but I make music on my iPad that isn’t half bad ,so music is the key of life

Crying with you! The effect that music has on us is so visceral, and when music connects us to others, especially those who are no longer with us, it can become sweetly poignant. Your response to Queen reminds me of a recent incident at physical therapy when John Denver's "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" came over the speakers. My dad died just over a year ago, and he loved that song and used to clap along with it while stomping one foot. As I heard the opening bars, the tears began to flow. We had set his montage to a different country song from the '70s, Glen Campbell's "Rhinestone Cowboy," as that song and "Country Boy" were playing constantly on different radio stations (this was 1975) as we tent-camped our way from San Diego to Yellowstone and back. Every time each song came on the radio (usually several times a day), all five of us sang at the tops of our lungs ... and we are NOT good singers, LOL!
I'm generally not a fan of country music; in fact, I despise it ... with the exception of John Denver (who was more folk than outright country) and Eddie Rabbitt (from the '80s) as my parents loved to line-dance in the living room to "I Love a Rainy Night" and "Drivin' My Life Away." My parents had an extraordinary 57-year marriage and were still in love with each other when my dad died.
The power of music to transport us to the past is extraordinary. Sending you (((hugs))) from stormy San Diego!!
What a lovely video Alana, thank you so much. I too get a lot of my music taste from my dad, specifically how diverse our tastes are (not showing off or nothin). We used to listen to mixtapes in the car- it was rare to hear a whole album so I got The Kinks playing one minute (I’m actually named after one of their songs) then Eurythmics, Paul Young, back to Bowie and The Sweet, Yardbirds…just a good all round mix of stuff. My dad went to see so many bands as a young man in the 60’s (he saw The Beatles one week in his hometown, watched them again a town over the next week. Thought they were rubbish til Ticket to Ride came out, which tickles me) though obviously his formative years, he moved to loving some serious 80’s Electronica and I remember watching Faithless at Glastonbury on the tv with him, he said it must be amazing to be there watching that on stage in front of you. Taught me to just like music in general and I can honestly say I’ve never stuck to a particular genre. I’m lucky to still have both parents in reasonable health in my forties. I know there’ll be tracks I’ll struggle with when they’re gone, music is so intrinsic to memory, it is our true time machine. Lots of love Alanna! ❤

When you pulled out that verse from Floyd's Time, I smiled to myself. It is such a powerful existential lyric that hits harder the older you get.
I think you cried because even though he is gone... he was with you again in the moment. This is what makes music so powerful. It says the things we don't know how to say. It brings us back to a person or a moment no matter how far away it may seem in time or space. What else has that kind of power.

Have you watched "Queen at live aid" it's rated as the greatest live performance ever, Freddie Mercury once AGAIN had the crowd in the palm of his hand.

Music has a way of taking us back and reminding us of people and times gone by and emotions we felt. For me it's Setting Sons by the Jam. it always brings back to me the feelings from those happy days at school in the late 70's and the fun we had back then. I hope you have added Queen back into your favourite playlist now and listen to it more often and with a smile next time instead of just tears while remembering your dad. 🙂

Right on Howard. I have a whole folder titled “Cheers for Tears” full of various music that evokes that emotional response. We all have the music of our youth that influences us no matter what decade one is from however the 60’s and 70’s are hard to beat.

Only surprise was Dire Straits, but hey cant win em all! Not an Adele fan but Queen/Fleetwood Mac/ Floyd/excellent, and Beatles I was 16 when Sgt Peppers came out just WOW! Although think yourself lucky that your beloved Dad filled your childhood with a band as great as Queen... my Mum listened to a massive amount of Barry Manilow and I know all his, ahem, 'classics' off by heart... whether I want to or not. 😔
Bless your heart, I know exactly how you feel about listening to your dad's music. I lost my mum almost exactly a year ago, and I can't listen to her music yet. She absolutely loved the Carpenters, and if any of their songs happen to come on the radio, I have to turn it off. Maybe one day I'll be able to listen to those songs she loved so much, but not yet. Music is just so powerful.
I lost my Mum ten years ago and I relish the tears that come now when I listen to particular music. It means she is still here in spirit and I don’t ever want that to end. So I say cry away.
Music is so powerful and really touches us at a deep level. I lost my brother a few years ago and have only just begun to be able to listen to Led Zeppelin without sobbing. My father used to sing and we often sang together - some pieces I'll never manage again. Remember the joy.

Completely with you on the crying part. Lost my dad back in June and in the months since, I've lost count of how many times something that reminded me of him has brought me to tears. Especially music, I've made myself fight back the tears on a few occasions walking home from work when I've had my music on.
Music is so powerful isn't it, the way it can manifest emotions in you that you sometimes didn't even know that were there.
OMG! You're crying, I'm crying!! I think there's something special about Queen. Great musicians, great energy, great sound, great variety in their work! Incomparable!🙂🙂🙂 Maybe someone from Queen will see your tribute. . . .

@@Rowlph8888Yes but what Suzanne and Alana are talking about is the intimate connection of music to one’s life and that of our loved ones. The Beatles are in a league of their own as far as the sheer number of important and long living songs they produced. However I saw them live twice and except for the pent up enthusiasm I can’t say they were memorable performances musically. Way too much teenage girl screaming. Ha. But still some of the most memorable events of my life as a young person.

Thanks Alanna, what a great idea to touch on music generally and your take on some top albums. I'm surprised that Dark Side of the Moon isn't higher and you could argue which of the Beatles albums is the best, but overall it's a pretty fair selection. Music stirs memories and emotions like nothing else and that's powerful and therapeutic, so remembering your Dad through music is a good thing - I find the older I get the more music makes me cry...in a good way.

Years after my dad passed, I was grocery shopping & his favorite Stevie Nick's song started playing. I had a full on meltdown right there in the aisle. You are doing your dad proud!
I played "The Great Gig in the Sky" for a relative who would never listen to the Floyd otherwise...and she loved it!

Great video Alanna. My thoughts: Adele- Not a fan, Amy Winehouse- never got into her, not my style, Fleetwood Mac- great band, Queen- who doesn't love Queen? Classic. Very sweet, hilarious story about Fat Bottom Girls. Dire Straits- I dig. I'm into them. Pink Floyd- one of the best of all time honestly. Prob my fav on the list. Oasis- I can get down with some Oasis, very 90's. The Beatles- I enjoy some stuff of theirs, the weirder stuff. Where did you get the list from?
I lost my dad in my late 20s.When I hear music he used to love, I hear him singing or see him dancing (real dad dancing) to his favourites. For me it's a joyful experience to remember him that way. I hope for you that the Queen album becomes a joyful memory, one to make you smile when you remember your dad. For many, music connects to a happy time/place/event. Remember those and the hole in your life where your father used to be is filled with him once again. ❤🩹

I’ve been in radio broadcasting in Australia for over 20 years. I’ve got 78,000 songs in my personal library and access the station’s library as well. Of all those albums, The Beatles definitely sits at number 1 spot for me. Of the Beatles catalogue Abbey Road is my favourite and number two is Sgt Pepppers. So I’m older than your Dad was, but I guess my sons have grown up listening to music much the same as you did. Both of them are big Beatles fans.
Your Sons are very lucky to have had your influence but also all those listeners on the radio are lucky too.
Queen II (or 2, if you like!), is my favourite Queen album - and the first one I bought, including the single 'Seven Seas Of Rhye', which is my favourite song by them. Some of the songs are very much heavier than their later songs, and there's a lot of 'dungeons & dragons' about it, but you should give it a listen, and it should be a revelation to you! Also try their 3rd LP, 'Sheer Heart Attack'!!

Say what you want about Brits, but we know how to do bands! It’s actually absurd how many big bands, of each era and decade, are British when you look into it
I'd love to see the most popular/successful bands of all time and which countries they're from - I think the UK would dominate

I feel like the best bands don't get enough exposure anymore though. Like, Ed Sheeran and Adelle and all that are talented, but their music is nothing that special or unique. The times where the likes of the Beatles and Pink Floyd get all the plaudits are long gone. The best bands of the day just aren't considered 'profitable' enough sadly
Brits have some of the greatest artists ever
Generally speaking the brits produce the best bands and America produces the best solo Artists .

@@matthewsmith8727I’m sorry to say that is one band I never got to see live. Regret 😢that. I did see Roger Waters as part of the lineup at Desert Trip which took place in Coachella and included: The Who, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and The Rolling Stones.
Queen 'Greatest Hits I' and 'Greatest Hits II' are both very good albums. Get your ears around their album 'Innuendo'. Their craftsmanship on this one in Freddie's last months of life was fantastic.

Aww my heart! I felt every word you said about avoiding your parent's music after they passed. I did the same. It is cathartic when you get the courage to play it for sure. I am very surprised the Rolling Stones did not make this cut! xx
All great albums in my opinion. I remember buying one of the Queen albums when I was a teenager, and my mum absolutely loved them. I get it as I still can't listen to Killer Queen, my mum's favourite track. I still remember us dancing around and singing 🙂. She died in 1994 and I still can't process properly.
If there is a hereafter.....your Dad will be chuckling over his daughter getting emotional over " Fat Bottomed Girls"!!

Hi Alanna, this was incredibly brave of you, but I'm not surprised by that, you always go that extra mile for your videos, but this was different, what you did was very personal and yet you shared it with everyone, you are a bread apart, not your average UA-camr by any means, to be in front of a camera pouring your heart out, genuine emotions of a very painful time in your life, that is true courage, my mum died when I was eleven and I had to look after my younger brother, that was hard, but I had been looking after him for the two years that my mum had been ill, that I was used to, I didn't realise how ill she was, then one day she wasn't there and this is the first time I have said that, 49 years that has been wanting to be said, thank you and take care.
