Aha! Finally something I can help YOU with after all you have done for me! So, you look at the wall examples and you think, "Yes, that's what I want," but if you give that pallet of bricks to ten different crews, or you give that pallet to the same crew to install on 10 houses, they will all look different. The brick pattern on our house was VERY important to me so I took photos of how I wanted the pattern to look and blew up the photos poster size. I taped them all over the windows of our house so the masons would know EXACTLY how I wanted the pattern. I also found an example of that brick mix done how I did NOT want them done (too many of one color together) and I put giant X to show that we did NOT want the bricks layed like that example. Now comes the important part. I made cakes, had fruit, coffee, sodas and sandwiches and made sure that the crew knew that while I was a fuss-budget about the install, I valued them and their expertise. They ended up separating the brick by color and one of the crew members stood at the end of the driveway and directed when the dark or light brick needed to be added or moved. With the thousands of comments you get, you will probably never read this, but I felt it was the least I could do with the amazing addition you have made to my life!!!
What a great tip and definitely something to keep in mind. I‘m sure Laura and/or Aaron will act upon your advice.
What fabulous advice based on real life experience!
So love the food bribes- I did the same with the guys building our house, PLUS Beer on Friday at quitting time!
Great advice! I bet they read it!! 👍🏼
Great advice!
Take it from me who lives in a red brick house, go with bricks that have cooler colors. It's hard to match flowers and pots to warm red bricks. What would look best with your Unique Stone urns for example. /Love from Sweden
Yes!
Exactly this.
I agree !
yes!
Excellent advice!
Laura, I would have gone with stone in a grayish blue hue. It would pick up the gravel coloring and when you speak to your architect about the changes you want to the house incorporate your stone choice again around the house. Option two would be using the same color bricks that you used to create your edging/pathways. One cohesive look.
Absolutely right. That was my thought too.
I agree also!
Yes, tie it in to your main house. More grey, neutral. Red brick doesn't connect to anything on your property.
But all of the paths are a cool red brick?
I was thinking the same thing...
Imagine the whole picture. Your home and buildings on the property are white with black accents. Perhaps bricks with greys would add a nice backdrop for pops of color from your plantings. Red bricks may fight with your pink and peach flowers. Just a thought. Anything you choose will be beautiful.
This right here.
Yeah, she always wants stones with a blue tinge. She is not a fan of red flowers so I can't imagine her using red/orange bricks.
I do think that black or gray brick. Your new walkway to the house could use the same colors
This.
You might want to check the brick color in actual daylight. If the lighting in the store is fluorescent, it may skew the shade a bit from what it would look like in full sun. Maybe there are samples you could take outside to check?
Such a fun day, so nice to see you both take a break from all the recent hubbub.
I so agree with you
Right on point! One must view outside.
This cannot be over-stated. Also light changes throughout the day so check every couple of hours.
Agree Lucy!
YES, Lucy! Can we bump this comment? Ha.
Pepper Mill Brick, Together With Grey Grout ... Would Be My Choice ... Beautiful ! =-)
Totally agree 😌
Ditto!!
Definitely would be my choice too!
Ditto
100%! Exactly what I was thinking!
You should ask if they know of any local businesses that have used the brick colors you are thinking of so you can see them in person, in the sun, in a grander application. That way you see what color you will truly get!
Pepper Mill or Smoke Stack, they look less stark than the redder ones, more antique ... not that anyone has asked for popular opinion 😅
Muted gray tones as the planters from Unique Stone are gray, the gravel, the general color way for home. Red, orange and pink tones would compete with the colors in the garden. Laura's personality is understated, her tastes are timeless and classic.
I agree. With the gray grouting. But I’d check with the paver bricks and sunshine. Such fun!
As Laura is watering them when she gets home all I can think is "oh yea plants, you have no idea yet. But you hit the jackpot with your new plant mom. You are gonna get spoiled!"
"Plant mom" 😀 so true!
They sure did !!!!
Greetings from Serbia, the homeland of Serbian Spruce trees. 🙂🌲
They're a beautiful tree. We would love one but don't have room.
@@MyFocusVaries Yes, they are beautiful, definitely worth planting. But if you cannot grow a full size tree, you can always go for topiary, they are easier to size control.
I always recommend purchasing Serbian Spruce, because it's becoming endangered in our country and we are trying to save it and promote it to other people, so it can have a chance of survival. (Hope I made sense. Sorry if I sound strange, or bad, English is not my main language, but I'm doing my best.)
Have a nice day! 🙂
@@hellodarling9073 thanks for the information! And your message was perfectly clear.
I love the more muted look of the pepper mill brick! With gray mortar
Me too.
Yes, my thoughts exactly!
My vote is carriage house! I think you'll regret having a more red brick.
Agreed, 'Carriage House' looked perfect to me!
Yes, Agree. Why would you get brick with a Red /Orange color ? You don't even plant that color of Flowers.....
In the video... as soon as Laura saw the 'Carriage House' Brick...Laura said: "That is Pretty."
U n t i l ... Aaron showed her the picture of the Hartley with the 'Red brick' > (that they Had picked out earlier)
Then...all of sudden that 'school house' Red was the best 'match' to the Picture!.... (but not the colors in her yard.)
Hello Laura! You introduced me to the Hartley greenhouse and I have been dreaming of having one for my urban cottage garden. It is out side of my budget for now. Therefore I am celebrating yours. Thank you for taking us on this journey.
Peppermill, Peppermill, Peppermill! Goes well with your black accents!
Peppermill!!❤️
Yes!!! Peppermill!!!❤❤❤
"That's a nice one... let's get three" 😆 you only live once!
Yes, like I say, if I ask for 5, and the good lord says 7, then 40 it is!
@@howtomakesourdough LOVE YOUR COMMENT!!!
When Laura says she loves the vanilla marigolds and the gomphrena and I literally bought those same plants just yesterday, you feel like, YES... Laura would approve!! 👏🏻👍🏻
Me too! I just planted the gomphrena which I always loved, but just discovered the vanilla marigolds and love them in my window boxes.
You need to bring a sample of the red brick that you use for edging and walkways to the store. as long as you’re close to that, any secondary or tertiary color will probably match well with the white and black accents on your house.
What a satisfying shopping trip...and I’ve still got a pocket full of money! Whoop! Whoop! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
😂😂 facts!!
That grey grout is your friend…it will tone down any of the too red/orange bricks.
I'm so glad you added the beautiful rocking bench and pretty honeysuckle! Those were both fantastic last minute purchases!!😃😃
I would pick a brick that is cohesive with your gravel and the brick stone pathway. Not necessarily matching but a brick that will compliment those others!
Yes, I think complimenting is better than matching everything.
I think I would prefer a stone versus a brick for my Hartley in my dreams of course. Just my 2 cents tossed out.
That was my thought too! Plus she has all the beautiful unique stone containers that are gray. I think the stone would have looked much better personally! I still love Laura though haha!
Me too, love rock!
@@kaylaunderwood2511 we all love Laura so very much!!
I would use stone, not brick. When there is already a ton of brick being used for walkways, I would either match it or go with a contrast.
That's what I would do too
Yes, if the brick match with the walkways is not dead-on -it will look like a mistake. Better to do a complete contrast.

✋I have an idea!! Each week at the end of a recap video or after your garden answer video pick a plant of the week and share things about it for a minute. That would be fun!!
This would be awesome!!
✋✋✋✋
Great idea
@@laurareid5837 I think it would be a fun thing to look forward to each week it would be the plant of the week!
Yes!!
Laura, I would ask to take the brick sample boards out into the sunlight.
I love that Aaron goes with you sometimes it's great to see him get into help picking out some plants and trees. Wish he would be in more videos. ☺
I like pepper mill or smoke stack. Are you adding a brick path leading up to it or near it? That may play into your decision of the color. You may also want to see it in daylight if that’s possible.
Those were my favorites too.
Laura in 100 degree weather: lugging around plants in jeans and long sleeves.
Me in 85 degree weather in PA: not leaving the pool unless it’s to get another beverage.
Yes! When she said that then saw her in jeans I was like "Ahh!" I'm in Houston, so perhaps their humidity is less than ours and it's not so bad. In our 100 degree weather, no jeans and most definitely look to be pool side. She's a trooper that one is.
Same here in VA! Dang humidity.
I would suggest that you get addresses where the brick has been used on houses to help you with your selection.
You are so blessed to be able to do all you do. Enjoy your young age and energy. I am so envious!
Knowing Laura's penchant for grey hard scape, I was surprised that she did not pick the Peppermill brick as it did have some in it with grey undertones.
“That’s why I keep you around, you got skills”. LOL. You two make me laugh.
Choosing plants doesn't phase you a bit, your plenty capable of choosing brick; your Hartley will be a dream. Far West is our neighborhood garden, but as you two, my husband and I took the day and drove to Andrew's Seed on Saturday. Your parent's garden center is gorgeous; we enjoyed looking at everything, and everyone was so helpful! Finally, we were able to get 50 purple asparagus, not available in Boise, and a bunch of other beautiful plants!
If you aren't going to have the brick for the greenhouse match the brick paths you have been putting in, then I really liked the tones of the pepper mill option. Especially with the gray mortar. Think it would go with the existing pathways you've put in but different enough to pop. But, that is just me and it's not my place lol. So excited to see the finished product though.
I agree and was wondering how they planned to do walkways to the Hartley. Definitely like the pepper mill option as well! I think I need that tone for my garden!
I agree with peppermill.
I enjoyed this video very much. This morning I went to the gardencentre with my older neighbour to look for some shrubs that we can place between our two frontyards. Afterwards we went out for lunch and had a good two-hour chat about gardening. She mentioned my knowledge about gardening and I was proud to say that I learned mostly from you guys. The longer I watch you, the more my garden comes together and people start to notice my enjoyment and skills. Lately friends, family and neighbours ask advice about plants and their gardens, and I really really enjoy helping them and knowing all that stuff through watching you guys every day. Thank you for all your work and for sharing your knowledge. Gardening has become such a joy in my life! Green greetings from The Netherlands.
What about all black brick. It wouldn't compete with the glass of the Hartley and black especially would make the flowers you plant pop.
I love shopping with her! Who else does? I love when shes with her mom too!! SO much Fun !
This is my question - Why wouldn’t you use the same brick as your sidewalks? Thx
I agree, great question!
@@rebekahmccabe3195 yaasss!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I almost skipped this video as I thought I would be overwhelmed by the selection of bricks. But glad I watched it because Laura is so great at teaching by pointing out details and sharing her thoughts aloud. I've learned so much. Thanks.
Side note. Dr. Tom Ranney at North Carolina State developed the Carolina Sweetheart redbud. It’s name is CarolinA redbud.
Anyone else want to go shopping in the nurseries with Laura? Boy oh boy, not one but three cypress. They are beautiful. That open space is going to be amazing when finished.
I never thought I would be jealous of hot, sunny days living in Texas. But here I am, drooling on the phone while it rains for the thousandth day in a row. 😩😂 I think this is our last rainy day for a while & I can’t wait to get out & plant!!! ❤️
Agreed. Although in my side of town we had no rain yesterday. Today its still making up its mind whether to rain or not. And yes we need to get out there to plant before we loose our time frame.
What are you planning to plant?
We have been flooding here in LA so I’m done with the rain too!!
As if we weren't already drooling over your parents' garden center...to have another great one within driving distance is fantastic.
Good morning everyone, I would spend all day in that garden center.
Omgosh, so would I!!
Me too! I would be like here take all my money! :)
The brick on your Hartley Greenhouse should be the same brick as your pathways, so it will match. We are so excited for you! We've been watching your channel since before you moved to your current home.
Just an opinion, I think with the black and white of your house the darker the brick the better, it would look wonderful with the white of the greenhouse. And it you got a dark grout, oh my how pretty that would be. I bet You guys could take a picture and photoshop the different choices where the greenhouse is going.
Love the new maple, so unique, leaf pattern kind of made me think of a batik-type design.
Lol! Laura said “you got skills, that’s why I keep you around.” She keeps Aaron around cause he’s HOT 🔥 😉
😱
Lol! I hope they put that in the recap.
@@DH-qz2so HA!!!
The spouses of these YT gardeners.
I read something similar on "Gardening With Creekside" about Jenny's husband, Jerry. 😁
I think their "hotness" can be measured by their skills and how they relate to their partner.
I think His Hotness is in Direct Relationship with His Support of Her Passion for Gardening. 🥰🥰🥰
Morning Everyone....Does anyone else think it's time for a plant tour around the high tower, greenhouse and other plants waiting for projects...something tells me it would give alot of garden centers around the country. A run for their money!!!🤗🥰🏃♀️🏃♀️...at least a 40min video ...still waiting for the garden tours with your mom..who is adorable
Ok crazy question… why don’t you use the same brick on the Hartley that you’ve used for your walkways and borders? Won’t it bother you that it’s not exactly the same? (I know that it’s none of my business, it’s just a matter of curiosity! 🤷🏼♀️)
I have been thinking the same thing too. If not same as pavers then stone would be my choice. Glad I don't have to make these decisions. Hurts the brain. lol
Good suggestion!!!
Sometimes the vendor cannot provide an exact match. They may be limited by contract. Sometimes it's good to select a good coordinating color than to select a near miss, as it can stand out rather than flow.
Good morning everyone have a blessed day
Whatever you choose will be great. But I’m surprised you would go with something so red, since you don’t love red flowers.
It's only on flowers ann not on red-foliage plants etc.
@@tracktor721 yep. You’re right. I was also thinking about that large red garden bed she had that she didn’t like. But what do I know. 😆
My favorite way to shop - “Ooh, I’ve never seen that before!” And find a place for it later. A place always opens up!
I thought you would go for the same brick that you used on the west side paving🤔
She can’t do the exact same brick for a wall. My mom had to return that exact brick because they are only pavers.
Oh, well that makes sense , thanks Ruby😊
Oh that was so much fun. Your channel is the first thing I watch in the morning. Sometimes if I’m up with my cat at 4ish in the morning you are here already. Love it
The "smoke stack" brick is aptly named. The colors remind me of Van Gogh's paintings of train stations back in the day.
I saw the Hartley team at the Philadelphia Flower Show. I had to tell the ladies how excited I was to see the new Hartley on Garden Answer. They told me it was coming soon. Can’t wait!
Good morning! So fun to see how much fun Laura and Aaron are having- like kids in a candy shop 🥰
Laura, you should choose bricks in brackets. Lay out the options and choose between A and B, then C and D, then E and F, etc. Then go back and match up the winners and do it again!
This is how we decide everything in our house. From pain colors to what’s for dinner. I can’t deal with too many options.
If there was a place like Far West near me, I would be broke all the time. Great day trip, thanks for sharing.
I love the Peppermill with the gray grout. So beautiful. Can't wait to see what you chose.
You could do the 'German Smear' coating on red brick to tone down any too-warm colors. It also gives an English cottage vibe.
So easy to do I did it on my house front
But why? If she wants to tone it down she should get toned down bricks.
@@rubyoro0 If she makes a choice she ends up not liking once it's put up. My opinion- I don't think any of the brick choices at that place were very good.
I love the bricks that have an old world look (weathered) it gives the illusion of an old European cottage and won't compete with all the colors of flowers. Laura soon your gonna have a beautiful forest of trees. I love trees 🌳. Today I'm taking a break and stayed in to watch GA . Once the sun sets I'll need to go outside to let my inspirations go to town! Thanks Laura and Aaron.
Could you check the available brick shades against the garden edging bricks? It would all blend in well.
I was thinking the same.
So many plants, not enough space. At least for me. I love the way you show different plants
I noticed the alliums look like they’re done blooming in the troughs outside the greenhouse. What’s the after bloom care like for those? Would love to see a segment in a video
Whatever you choose... I'm excited! 💚💚💚
We have a house in our neighborhood that has planted a LOT of Weeping Colorados and other bizarre weeping trees. It’s a bit overkill...and every time I drive by I think “Whoo Ville”!
LOL!
It's Tim Burton's house
I find them creepy and expect a pair of arms to pop out of them whenever I see them!
The reddish one! It will contrast with the leaves! The brownish one will vanish among the trees
Watching the trees come out of the trailer is like the clown car at the circus ❤️
This made me happy 🙌🏻❤️
Gardening is not for the weak!! Who says we have to go to the gym for a work out, just lift a few pots everyday, love that you are a beast Laura
“Hey Aaron, I’m just gonna take a look over there real quick...” famous last words. My husband would roll his eyes and say “distracted by shiny things.” What can we say? We love looking at pretty stuff!
I had so much fun watching this video. You walking into a garden center is like a kid walking into a toy store. Your excitment inspires me. I became interested in gardening a few years ago and watch you faithfully on my way to work in the morning. I have learned so much. This year Im trying to nail down my drip system and get it just right. Your videos have been so helpful. I love yours (and your moms) famous line when you are shopping. "I should have that".......lololol cracks me up. Thanks so much for all you do to educate us newbies.

Having bricks that match your brick paths would be beautiful. I think the warmer tones would be harder to match with your flower beds. That maple you picked up would be beautiful in the pot where you currently have your Japanese maple you were wanting to put in the ground! I love the selection of evergreens you picked.
Totally agree with remarks about matching as close as possible to your new walkways and keep some grey tones in the brick. It will look so great with the black and white coloring and with all the Unique Stone planters. Loved peppermill
I have my pen and paper ready! I keep a running list of plants I want to but one day 😁 that Eskimo sunset sycamore maple is amazing!!!
When I see something I like i screenshot it (the tag) and I have a album 'garden answer' that I move it to. When I find it and buy it I delete it as I have the plant card then. Much love StL. Missouri 6a ❤❤
It was a stunner!!! Like hello there beautiful one, you're coming home with me! I wonder if it would survive in my Zone 9a...I'd hate for it to die being so beautiful and unique. Let's see how it does with Laura.
💞🤗🥰LAURA AND AARON THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING ME ON 🇺🇸 ❤ YOUR TRIP. I WAS EXCITED 😁 AS WELL TO SEE WHAT YOU GUYS CHOSE FOR THE GREENHOUSE AND THOSE BEAUTIFUL TREES AND YOUR NEW FINDS. JUST AWESOME, ONE LOVE 💘 🇯🇲
The Sumac grows as weeds in our area in PA. They take over areas everywhere are we struggle to get rid of them. I hope you have good success with them. Love everything you share! I started watching you just this year. Happy gardening!
Same experience in BC Canada, I love my sumac but it suckers everywhere, luckily the deer like to eat them when they are small. It’s the only time I’m happy the deer eat my plants!
Same in KS, pretty in Fall with red seed pods, (good for winter arrangements), but spreads quickly if not monitored. Zone 6a
Blue skies in Boise. I have memories of being at the parks with grandparents and walking down Harrison Blvd. I remember seeing the dry lightening up in the mountains, sudden thunderstorms and the occasional dust storms. Really a unique part of America
I say the walkway bricks too, or stone that ties with the gravel and your stone pots🌺🌻🌸💕

I'm glad you are considering the color of the mortar in all of this. That wall you showed at the end of the brick segment with the different mortar colors really made the one brick look so different with each mortar color. And don't forget you have all the brick in your sidewalks that you just had laid which would be my choice. Bring it all together.
Carriage house is my choice especially with your love of black trim. Have fun!
Yes, that color matches the best with Everything in their Yard / Garden! Does another company have more choices?
Red & Orange tones would compete with the colors in their yard / garden. Just like Red flowers do!
I love your channel so much…you two have taught me so much, and I am no spring chicken, so even us seniors can still keep learning. My garden has never looked better. Thanks for all you help.
Loved "shopping" with you for trees today!
Years ago we planted a “Wendy’s Wish” Salvia, knowing nothing about it. It was a HUGE hummingbird magnet! Haven’t ever seen it again...if we did, we would snap it up. Be sure to plant it where you can sit and enjoy the hummers. ❤️
I'm just like you with making decisions when there's lots of options! Loved the Peppermill with gray grout! Classic. It will be great with any of them!
Aaron and you did a fantastic job of choosing your trees and shrubs. Love your family and videos.
I love how when you go to garden centers, you tell us the names of some of the unusual plants. Our new property has a what looks like an alley cat redbud! I wasn’t sure what it was until I saw this video. Thanks!
You guys work so well together, it's admirable!! You don't over due it for the camera whitch is refreshing to watch.
Good morning! 🌻🐝
What a fun video, love these outings where we get to see all the beautiful plants and items. You should look at your brick choices in the daylight outside as things always look different in natural light.
We just took out 2 45 ft bald cypress trees from our yard due to the knees that keep coming up in the yard and flower beds. I cried the day the arborist came to cut them down. Just wanted to worn you about how destructive the cypress roots can be. They are beautiful trees if you don’t need to mow or plant under them.
I was just thinking about that! Bald cypresses are great adjacent to water because then you don't have to worry about the knees coming up in a pond or whatnot. I'm dreading Laura getting frustrated with having to mow or plant in and around bald cypress knees.
I don't think they get knees in very dry locations. A friend has an old one in northern MO-- no knees.
And I hate the leaves when they fall off! They stick to everything
Wow that Eskimo maple tree is really interesting. Great tree haul.
It’s an exciting day for you guys!! Picking out things for your new greenhouse and it might come sooner then expected...Enjoy your day.🌞
Laura! Honeysuckle! Would you be willing to do a video on the honeysuckle when you plant? Treatment, pruning etc?
Great timing! I just told my husband I was heading to Far West to shop while the roofers are here pounding away.
Ooh, great idea. I'm having a new roof installed and I have yet to check out the Twin Cities' equivalent to Far West.
@@Edu_Kate I highly recommend it. I came home after a long day at the garden center with a ton of plants and my roof done and didn't have to endure the noise. It was much more pleasant looking at beautiful plants. 💚
I like the Pepper Mill. I think it more subtle. I think that the pots, plants and flowers would not have compete with the red brick 🧱 Can’t wait to see it finished!!!
