Yes, indeed. It was the seventies. That made it possible. I absolutely love the original as well, as do my kids and their kids. No one finds it overly sinister or inappropriate. It's one of the most brilliant movies I've ever seen. An absolute stunner. It's important to keep things in perspective or we'll just lose everything!

@@steelyman08 the only change they did on Pinocchio in the Disney version is that he is very naive. I mean, when children are born, are they born miserable and ungrateful, or is it the parents that enforced their behavior?
On an unrelated note, the creation of Pinocchio is similar to what Akira Toriyama would do with Arale, when he made Dr. Slump before Dragon Ball. Both Gepetto and Senbei Norimaki regretted going for the mouth before continuing with their work.

Some of the original metaphors are harder to grasp without the context of the book. For example, the idea of becoming a donkey was a warning to children that if they didn't put in the work to get and education and/or learn a valuable trade, the only skill they'd be able to sell is their labor as a beast of physical burden (which Pinocchio and his friend both had to do).

I really love how, in this adaptation, becoming a real boy is an actual journey for Pinocchio, that it takes him several years to learn how to not only be a good boy, but also a good person. I think he definitely undergoes an inner transformation here - from rude, disobedient, and uncaring, to kind, considerate, and caring!

@@2lobo777 I agree. It's the animation in the original that is so incredibly breathtaking. I grew up with it, but only realized how truly incredible it was once I had my own kids watching it. Am I wrong to think that no one could ever match that kind of brilliant work in our era? I watch a lot of newer Disney movies with my grandchildren and, although they have all the new technology, etc., nothing matches the early animations or storytelling. I'm still just stunned by the craftsmanship that went into them!

I agree that this is closer to the source material but Disney’s Pinocchio was also pretty dark, what with the boys on Pleasure Island turning into donkeys and being reduced to feral beasts and slaves, Lampwick’s transformation, etc. The whole Pleasure Island sequence was the stuff of nightmares. Even though it’s more lighthearted than the source material it doesn’t shy away from showing the harsh realities of the world to get its message across.

But in the story what really happens is when the musician throws him into the sea to drown him, a school of fish come and start to eat him. 34:58 They’re going away. The rabbits are going away.
35:06 Little Fairy, the rabbits have gone away now. And I’m… And I’m… I’m… I’m… I’m completely cured. Look. Look.

What the fuck?! The animated version of the hanging is so fucked up! I feel horrible for Pinocchio! They had the balls to depict that trait from the book in an animated adaptation! This does not compute! I’d rather have them do that in live action! Not a cartoon! Someone please hit me hard to give me amnesia!!!!!!!

@@FatV1nceStudios cool. But I prefer the movies and shows. Especially the Disney version of Pinocchio. I hope to see animated Pinocchio again in Disney cartoons. Disney never does the messed up stuff the original story did like his legs getting burned off (even though it was referenced in the live action remake), Jiminy Cricket getting crushed to death by Pinocchio with a hammer, and of course Pinocchio getting hanged.

@@HunterEQGtribute yeah I feel like it would ruin Disney’s kid friendly rating. I’m just imagining parents watching the movie with their 3 year old kid and they experience that.

Hope this one is better than the one where they made him hero for lying! He lied on purpose till his nose grew long enough to tickle the whale's palate and make him sneeze them out.
"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and ALL LIARS, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death." Revelation 21:8!

In the original novel, Pinocchio was more hardheaded and mean in the beginning. This movie is heavily based on the original serial story written by Carlo Collodi in the 1800s more than the Disney version.
