We plan a backpacking trip around the perseids every summer. My sister and I are heading out with my best friend and her young kids today. It’s so cool watching them from the granite lake we’re heading to!!!
My family and I was camping tonight in Iowa and we were treated to an amazing light show of nature! We saw some great bright meteors with great long tails. So Fun!
The Geminids are now the best annual meteor shower for peak viewing. The parent comet of the Perseids passed through the inner solar system in the early 1990’s and the Perseids have been generally declining since. They are still good, and because they have a broad peak produce more meteors in total, and they sometimes are unexpectedly good. However… compared to the Geminids their peak is lower, at US latitudes to get a good show you have to be up well after midnight, and most of the meteors are not bright enough to show up against a badly light-polluted sky. The Geminids are in mid December, which is a better time of year to observe from places like Texas where it is hot hot hot in August even late at night. The Geminids are also visible at hours before most people are in bed, and they produce more bright meteors. A few years ago I saw about one Geminid per minute despite a full moon in Gemini right by the radiant. The Geminids in recent decades have been getting more and more active as the Perseids have been declining. The Geminids get less press coverage but for places like Texas are now clearly the better shower. You need to catch the Geminids near peak though. The Perseids are more forgiving that way.

It was night in Kansas one night. I was daydreaming lying down looking out the window..when low and behold. A green meteor made its way slowly across the sky as I was daydreaming. ... ... I marveled . NOT a regular falling star.
I think we have to be lucky. Clear skies and looking north at the uncivilised time of 4am. This morning was cloudy and tonight it raining (Victoria). But fingers crossed!

Hi, can anyone tell me if any of these meteors could have landed in Australia, I was on the verandah having a coffee at 7am a couple of days ago and we herd what sounded like a ricochet without the gunshot then something hit the roof bounced a couple of times and landed somewhere in the yard.

Dark skies REALLY help. In light-polluted suburbia you may not see any. Perseus needs to be up. If you are in the Northern US you can start seeing them at a reasonable hour. In the Southern US, basically the later the better, right up until sunrise, and you may get nothing at all before 11 PM.

Nothing in this debris field is big enough to survive passing through the Earth’s atmosphere. What we see is literally the debris burning up. So, with no worries about impact, you can look up and enjoy the show. 😉
Most of it would burn away before entering the atmosphere. By the time it lands it won't do much. There are videos of meteors hitting. It honestly looks like a bright flash of light and if you are close enough it sounds like a loud lightning strike. A meteor the size of a trailer home is about the size it would take to do serious damage.
Ms. Ivey's enthusiasm is infectious. Who better to teach our younger generation the joys of astronomy?
Unfortunately it's getting harder and harder to even see the Milky Way. Such a shame.
