I love fishing for bluegill on ultralight gear. It’s a blast. I love eating bluegill more than crappie. And bluegill fight above their weight class! 👍🏼😎🎣
Tonight I fried up some crappie and couldn't help but think how thankful I was for Richard Gene showing me how to catch crappie. Your videos are 1st class my friend! Thank you.
Here in south Michigan the DNR planted shellcrackers in many inland lakes. About ten or twenty years ago the lakes got infested with zebra mussels from boats that were on the Great Lakes. Those mussels came from Europe on freighters on the lakes. The red ears or shellcrackers have really gotten big and plentiful from those mussels!!!! Still have the native bluegill and pumpkinseed sunfish and seeing hybrids with the red ears or shellcrackers. They are all fun to catch and great to eat.
i live in southeast mi, bluegill are our favorites, my mom almost caught one that would have beat the state record a few years ago, it was 11 1/2" long, not sure on the weight but now i carry a fish scale with me just in case!
Thanks Richard for always sharing your hard earned knowledge , I have learned SO MUCH watching your videos for lord of species of fishing . You are the man !
i just got my fishing license a couple weeks ago, this channel has been my absolute favorite for learning how to fish for bluegill / panfish. your personality is awesome and i hope you and your wife lead happy lives.
Gotta love Ol RGTFM… I would put him up against anybody when it comes to fishin, and yet he isn’t one of those stuck up , too good for everyone else types. Thanks for all you do Richard , WOOOOOOO IM TALKIN BOUT WOOOOOOOO !!!! 👏🏼😁
Richard I am telling ya outside of you being an Alabama fan I know for a 100% fact it would be a blast fishing with you. And outside of that I want to share something with you. I was showing my Dad one of your videos the other day and he said to me that the way you were fishing for crappie was how he used to fish for them when he was a young man. Now he’s 75 so we know that when he was young Noah was building the Arc. Had to pick on my Dad a little. But the main reason I really enjoy watching your videos is for a few reasons. The first being you are a Christian man. The second you fish using the older ways like I was taught. Which I think are the best ways if I am being honest. One of these days I hope I get the opportunity to fish with you so I can learn more. Thank you for all you do for the fishing community.
Thanks RG. That’s how I like to catch ‘em in East TN as well. Sometimes a gold hook and the piece of worm, with a split shot about a foot above it is just the ticket.
Woooo and heyyyyy is how me and my buddies communicate now.. Just the other day I called a buddy and simply said, "woooo" when he answered he said, "what's up"?? I said, " heyyyyy", and hung up the phone... 15 minutes later he showed up with his gear and we went fishing... True story!! Richard Gene is an absolute influencer.. Fishing Machine!! Woooo.
I started fishing when I was 5 with a $0.59 cane pole. When I was 7 I got my first green Johnson reel and started learning how to cast. I'm about to turn 58 so, I 've been fishing for a little while.
I love your videos! Was just wondering if you could talk a little more about what you look for when trying to find these beds...are the everywhere, close to the shore? How are you locating them to catch them one after another like that. Just watching you catch fish like you do makes me just as excited as you! I appreciate any and all tips and knowledge you share! Thank you for the amazing videos!
They will not bed in muddy bottoms it has to be sand. They fan the sand with their fins which you can see the circles this creates . You can buy a pair of polarized fishing sunglasses which makes it easier to see these circles/beds. This along with Richards information should help you in locating a bream bed or shell cracker bed. Hope this helps you 👍🇺🇸
@@dannyrowe4386 I told you something that might not always be true. They may bed in mud but they prefer sandy bottoms most times. Sorry about that. Good day buddy
I thought that I was through fishing for Shellcrackers this year, but after watching this, I may get some worms and fish one more day. I have plenty in my freezer. Grin.
Gene, you educate and entertain at the same time. Yes, BG may taste better than Crappie. For me, it's the same as rabbit vs squirrel. LOVE squirrel, but will take either. Please keep the vids coming. John , NJ native.
Canyon creek super ultralight 8ft. Shimano Sienna 500 spooled with MC 4lb. Favorite creek rod, in can be difficult to manage the brush, but works like a canepole from the bank and will cast 1/32 jigs across the creek...love this channel, keep it up!
As always...I enjoy watching your fishing videos and I've certainly learned quite a bit about how every species are triggered to bite, even when they are not actively feeding. Please take Mama Sue out more often. I love watching her do her version of the "Woo...Woo...Wooo"..! God bless you both. Please take care of yourselves, and stay safe. See you on the next one. "Tight Lines"...!
Totally agree, bream on the bone fried whole, is better than crappie filets. Folks just don’t know what they’re missing. Great video. I still love this kind of fishing. Nothing beats catching and eating bedding bluegill on a full moon. 🌝 🎣 God bless.
Richard I have been watching your channel for over a year and was thinking you were a pretty smart fellow. After all carpenters have to know how to use a roofing square, measure twice cut once and all of that other stuff. I watched and listened to everything you said and did. My fishing improved. Yep I thought you were a pretty smart guy, until yesterday when I stuck my thumb into a catfish's mouth just like you. Now I may have to reevaluate my opinion. :)
Thanks Richard you have so much knowledge to share I hope you keep it up and I enjoy the endings Funnies and making people laugh is always a good thing.
Thanks Richard for another great video. I really appreciate your sharing your vast knowledge and experience with us. There is always something to learn. Plus your unique blend of humor makes them very entertaining. 🤠
My father would take us to Lake Isabella in California and we used the little zebco. Talk about fun and large bluegill and the best eating. I always thought my father, who was from Arkansas, was joshing when he said he could smell them. Used little grasshoppers I caught by the railroad tracks.
I had never heard of shell crackers until I started watching videos and I live in Arkansas. ☺️. But I sure have learned a lot from watching you. Love ❤️ your videos.
Love watching and learning from your videos. Putting this knowledge learned on Watts Bar Lake. I'm started to drive my stepson crazy with the WOO when I catch a fish.
Sun fish on the grill, too low heat, just one more beer, or maybe one more, dried to perfection, by mistake, smoke was just right, again mistake: excellent outcome! Keep fishing Gene for all of us that can't any more.
My buddy and I went fishing the other day for bluegill. He bought a catfish pole and a heavy line. lol I was man, you are taking the sport out of it! I use a 4’ 6” pole and at most 4lb line for crappie and gills. So much fun
Dude, all my friends give me shit for knowing all the native species. I was a biology/taxonomy major and I've always been a fisherman. When my friends catch any sunfish, I'm like, "that's a blah, blah, blah" and they're like "it's a bluegill." I love that Richard knows his species!
Love It brother great video ! I'm going to go try to catch some in the morning as soon as I get off the graveyard shift ! I love using worms don't really matter which kind but recently I've been using crickets and they have been working like a dream. Mostly I believe because they have a lot more liking to those smaller bugs 'round this time of the year
I used a green and black trout magnet and jig work really well. Gonna try a 1” gulp minnow on a trout mag jig next time. Worms always work great but constantly having to put bait on is why I use artificial
Big like Richard. I love eating bream. You act as silly as me🤣 I'm 64 and I ddnt know bream went to the beds every full moon in the summer. I will remember that. Never to old to learn buddy. I'm over in Arkansas 👍🏻
According to the spawning temp charts, Pumpkin Seeds (Shell Cracker?) typically spawn at water temps several degrees cooler than Bluegills. Here in Michigan I typically find Pumpkin Seeds and Black Crappies on the spawn beds the same week, with Bluegills significantly later. So I the case of hybrids, I’m Curious if it’s a male Pumpkin Seed hooking up with a female Bluegill, or vise versa?
I went Tuesday, the day after the full moon. I took my autistic son and we caught em 1rst cast and the last cast and all in between. And a nice catfish grabbed my sons line, line, worked the drag with his light line and hot him in!! Whooo!
I feel like this man is my friend & I dont even know him. What a blessing.
I love fishing for bluegill on ultralight gear. It’s a blast. I love eating bluegill more than crappie. And bluegill fight above their weight class! 👍🏼😎🎣
I hooked a nice 1.5lb bluegill. Literally thought I had a 4lb bass on it the whole time... They fight good for their size! I love it.
Woo… My dad and I loaded the boat with Bluegill & Shell Cracker’s this weekend!

Really Really Really Great video LOVED IT GREAT FOR KIDS AND GROWN-UPS THANKS AGAIN FOR THE VIDEO RICHARD GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY RICHARD
Hands down pound for pound hardest fighting fish.
Well ounce for ounce maybe.
@@Jason-kg4rs Don't know where you're at but here they can get to a few pounds, although it is pretty darn rare to get one over a pound.
From southern Missouri. There we could catch them in the 1 lbs. Range fairly regularly. Up in Northern Ohio now. They are typically pretty small.
I like a 64th oz jig and a 1" gulp minnow. Under a small slip bobber with a small split shot about 8" up from the jig. Works well up north.
Thank you Richard, you are a great teacher. Much appreciated.

You have more than a little Ernest T. Bass in you. Def shellcrackers here in West Tennessee
"Chiq-a-pin" here in Southern Louisiana

True about the flavor the skin adds to a bream....and a little bit of extra crispy.
