- A quick video to show you how to season a new granite mortar & pestle and get it ready for it's first use. This applies to a new mortar and pestle and is a simple diy to do. A great gadget to have for any kitchen, a mortar and pestle grinds fresh or dried herbs for making pestos, dressings, guacamole and salsas to smashing lemon and limes for your favourite tropical drink. No food processor needed.

Excellent, you’ve saved me from ingesting granite. I had no idea about this! Thank you
Thank you so much for the instructional video, I did everything but it only took me 2 rounds of rice seasoning for the powder to clear. Happy pestle using!
Lol, that's what happen when you get a little muscle behind it. Glad the video was useful for you. I'm so enjoying my mortar and pestle. ❤
@@mayflylife where did you get the motor pestle
I guess I ingested a lot of granite dust back in the day! Never seasoned mine.
Now thanks funny...good roughage though :)
Lmao like a crocodile
It makes no difference. Granite is inert. You don’t want to breathe granite dust but you can eat all you want. Won’t hurt a thing.
@@jerod5636
I wouldn't say "all you want" but the trivial amount that you get from a mortar shouldn't hurt internally as long as it's dust.
Lol ate a lot of lead paint in my day. Never seasoned unfortunately :(
This is a great video, super informative and well produced. Thanks!
Thank you! 😊❤
Very good video, thanks for all the tips
Hi there, thanks for making this video. I have a question: How long does it take you, approximately to grind down one teaspoon of rice to a powder? I've been grinding on that rice for 10 to 15 minutes and it's not turning into a powder.. Is this going to take hours or what? My hand is starting to hurt! lol.. I'm starting to feel like a "To heck with this!!...and hey little granite's not going to hurt me, right?"
Lol. No you don't have to gind the rice to complete powder, just as long as you've worked it into the mortar well. Some powder should be present each time you add rice, but if grains are still present you're still okay.
@@mayflylife Thanks very much for your response! I thought it was ready for use when I bought it.. Then I read the instructions, like : Ok, let's do this.. Then I started trying to grind that rice to a powder and was like.."OH HECK NO!" Then I left it as was and now couple weeks later I decided that 'yes I do want to use it'.. And after grinding for a good solid 10 minutes.. Well, you just read what happened.. So, I was searching the internet for cheats.. There HAS to be an easier way, I mean my left arm is falling off! But no (..sigh..).. Well.. Making a mental adjustment.. This thing is just going to take (WAY MORE,..like.. WAY MORE!! uRGH) time than I thought.. And I'm going to do this just few minutes per day.. Should be ready for use somewhere next week right?.. RIGHT?! %#@ my ARM, MY ARM!! What does a woman have to do to bake a simple eggless bananabread!! OMG it BETTER be the best tasting bananbread EVER!
Lol. Oh I know, but once it's done it's done. Oh the things we do for a great recipe. 😄❤
@@Christian_P01 Hey there, well after a few more times of grinding afew minutes each time, alternating coarse salt and rice I had enough and followed another tip I found on youtube which was grinding the bowl down with water only untill the water stopped becoming merky. I may have made the mistake of using brown rice instead of white I was thinking later, maybe brownrice is harder to grind than white rice? Anyways.. Then I let it dry and just started using it! My arm grew back on after a few days and I'm still alive to this day so hope that helps you :p Good luck!* Edit: Oh I overlooked the part where you said you had found that water tip.. hehhe.. So yeah I had too I just found it later on so switched the water/ rice around! I hope yours will clean out easier than mine!
@@WazigeLogica LOL you gave me a good laugh because I totally relate to what you are saying. Thanks love.:)
Thnx you so much!! Greetings from the Netherlands
Thank you 🙏🏽 for your video. Does it have to be white rice? Can it be brown?
Thank you for your question. Oh yes for sure you can use brown rice. You should be able to still see a color change with this variety of rice.
Mayfly Life it worked just fine, thanks!
Thank you
The seasoning instructions on my mortar and pestle also say to grind garlic, black pepper, turmeric and salt and then dump it out, but I didn't see you do that, unless I missed something but I don't think so. Is there any reason for that?
I just got one, and it says to add garlic, salt, pepper, and cumin. It's probably a personal choice to seasoning your mortar and pestle. If you get this, it's been two years. What did you end up doing? Thanks.
Thank you,
You are awesome!
good video :) you seem like a nice mum who can cook very well ! :)
What’s the brand name of your Mortar and Pestle? It’s very beautiful and would like to possibly purchase one just like yours! 🙂👍 great video and thank you.
Thank you so much. It was a gift from my daughter. The brand is a Lagostina Granite Mortar & Pestel. I love it. ❤😊
these are fairly generic from overseas. i have the exact same one from remi Oliver i bought at stokes.
@@mayflylife I have a new morter and pestle identical to yours. I was wondering if the outside needed some sort of conditioning, oiling or ? It's so porous, it appears to need some care! Thank you. ☺
@@Rollwithit699 No need to do anything to the exterior surface.
@@mayflylife Thank you for getting back to me. 😉
The “t” is silent like in Nestle, trestle, nestle, etc. thanks for the info.
jbelme1 "Nestle", the Company, now pronounce their name as Neslay.....it must be the original. Although to nestle amongst the trees is silent "t" it is interesting to see some videos where they do pronounce the "t" in mortar and pestle.
It can be pronounced either way. The word pestle is a cognate with the word pesto (as in the sauce). In fact the sauce was originally always made in a mortar and pestle.
@@joeyree22 you clearly didn’t even bother to do a basic Google search. Who exactly is the troll!? Wowww
www.etymonline.com/word/pesto
@@joeyree22 you’re clearly a bit slow, so I’ll be as clear as possible. As stated before, “pesto” and “pestle” are cognates in that they share the same root.
Here’s a little light reading for you if you dare:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pesto
And make sure to click on the “Etymology” tab. And pull your head out yo ass.
@@jasonheinen582 I'll be sure to pull my head out my ass, thanks for the suggestion. Remember you'll never win and you're the one who will look like an asshole.
Ok, so dumb question bc now I’m confused. I have to put boiling water in it first before I start grinding rice in for the first time?
Surely you have just cured it and now need to season it?
I like your videos so much 🤗😍😊
I'm new to this . So we never want to run it under water in the sink to clean it right ? It looks like you only clean it with the rice n a dry paper towel ?
You can use a damp cloth for both inside and outside the bowl.
@@mayflylife thank you so much. I get mine from Amazon tomorrow n can't wait to get started 😎
@@mayflylife Do you also add boiling water to clean it after each use? :)
@@koreyb Thank you :)
Very helpful information!
Thank you. I sincerely hope that it was useful. 😊
I did all this to my granite mortar and pestle, except the last part where you added all the spices, and when i do the test to see if my water will still come out murky, i find that the water is still grey, a shallow pool of grey at the bottom, does this greyness ever go away comepletey?
Nope. Because you’re always grinding a little bit of granite because stone against stone will always shave some material off. It’ll become clean once you grind the entire bowl away. I wouldn’t worry about it.
. . : Thank You : . . You are Most AWESOME . .
Where can I purchase this one can you share link?
My advice would be to not add too much rice if you’re struggling to get a powder. That’s what I did. Still it’s a good amount of work to get to a powder
Can you tell us where we can get this?
I got my Lagostina mortar and pestle from a box store here on Canada called Canadian Tire. They are also available on Amazon.
Why not rinse it with water?
We in rural areas of India Don't use granite for making mortar and pestle. But nowadays it has becoming more common. Very sad 😭
Why is it sad? What material are they made of there usually?
Did you know that's the best to use? Just because you're in India and use "marble" thinking you're all royal and all...doesn't mean you use the right stuff. You know the history of this? It would all be are from Stone if you knew anything!
I still can't seem to make mine work.
Try cleaning it with a little soapy warm water, rinse thoroughly and let dry completely. Add about a tsp of rice and start grinding. This method is for rough granite so it might take a bit.
@@mayflylife Thank you
Feel like I've been doing this for days, but still having black slury from the stones
Ah, well a little dirt is good for ya lmao... I had no idea granite M&P's needed care like this.. I bought mine for the simple task of grinding medicines. It's no wonder the powder kept getting stuck in certain spots.. There are lots of divots in the bowl upon inspection... drat.. no rice and don't feel like going to the store lmao
How often should you season?
As long as you clean it with soap and water and let it air dry between each use you shouldn't have to do anything else. However, if you experience any unpleasant smell or flavour grind it with rice and wash again.
@@mayflylife don't use soap. It absorbs the smell very fast
@@erer782 thank you for your input. I only use pure unscented castle dish soap to clean my motar and pestle as per the manufacturer. Granite is quite porous and will retain oils from some spices, so it is necessary to clean it every so often.
The instructions that came with my box say to use wet rice to grind..why did it say that
Thank you for your question. I prefer to use dry rice and then rinse with water later and leave to air dry. If your mortar and pestle instructs you to use wet rice, that’s fine. Not sure why they require wet rice. It come down to preference and this is the most popular method.
That needs to be washed first you can't go straight to rice.
Wash very thoroughly with high pressure to get as much material granite material as possible
Then with water inside of the pesto mortar you grind water to smooth down the inside
Wash again under high pressure
Let thoroughly dry then do the rice
Thank you, that's another option. This is the method I was taught. 😊
why is it needed to prepare at first use?😮
Great question. It polishes the pestle smooth and removes the dirt and debris in your pestle. If not seasoned first this would end up in the food you are using.
thanks😉 love from asia
The t is silent in pestle, like hustle.
Use salt. Faster.
That is another option, yes, but I find faster is not always better or more efficient.
Why don't they machine polish this to sell?
Awesome Grandmother,
Do yoga stay healthy😇*🙏🙏*
Anyone else sitting here grinding and nothing is happening to their rice ? I’m scared of going too hard and breaking it
If I would have known before hand I would not have gotten a mortar and pestle... sigh now I’m just watching a bunch of videos on how to do this. My hand hurts
I seasoned mine by grinding weed.
If you can grind cannabis with this it’s too damn dry. Yuk

Oh my god... ta-ta-ta-ta-day junior! 😴😅
Sorry I'm not trying to come off sounding harsh and/or rude. But...
.... "Whatcha gonna do is" is your gonna have to lay off of some (well the majority) of your "Umms" and/or "aahhhs" and the pauses before and after those "whatcha gonna do is's" its killing your video. I made it to 1:59 though! 😅
(I actually finished it after this comment though)
Other than that you do a great job with your videos audio and lighting are great. Very informative. Just wanted to throw that out at ya. Merry xmas
Thank you very much. What brand is your Mortar & Perstle? love it!
The brand is Lagostina which can be purchase at Canadian Tire in Canada or I’ve also seen it on Amazon.
Thank you for your respond. Take care
