Thank you for explaining WHY to use garlic, salt, etc. I bought a grey and white marble mortar and pestle, and the seller told me just to season with oil. Many videos suggest rice and salt only. Others mentioned garlic, but yours was the only one I've found that explained the anti-bacterial/anti-fungal properties. Very complete video with a great explanation and demonstration!
This is the best method I've seen on UA-cam thanks so much for sharing. My mortar and pestle should be arriving tomorrow. After following this method I'm going to give it a blast of UV light as well for extra measure.
One of my earliest childhood memories is watching my grandmother using a mortar and pestle to grind up garlic cloves, onion slices and lemon juice to make a tasty dressing over chicken breast before frying. Great stuff here, WI Greg!
I think regular table salt... Just a couple teaspoons is enough to do the job. You don't want the bowl to be too smooth... That stops the effectiveness of the grinding. A little courseness in the bowl helps hold the dry spices while your stirring... So spices get ground down without too many spices jumping around or popping out. ( Peppercorns especially)
Seasoning it with just water will help remove all the Machine grooves and smooth the Mortar and Pestle, once completely smooth then move to seasoning with grains. You can see the groove marks still in your Mortar while you're trying to season it in the video.
I needed a mortar and pestle had one and broke it cause it was old didn't know how to use it anyway got a new one didn't know u needed to season it. Just followed ur video I use all of these spices on the regular. Thank u for posting this. Very helpful.
Mine will be here in a few days your Dry Seasoning sounds better than the Wet bake method. More anti fungal/bacterial with the dry method. Yes I to did the search internet as well as a few others for the best possible season-cure most agree rice-cumin-garlic-salt-pepper are the top choices most in my area also will add few whole cloves anti bacterial also. I appreciate the video.
I never was good at cooking, or any sort of cooking, But i'm glad that you have shared this, I don't even know what a mortar and pestle is, and what it does. but watching this video, I learned something new. Thanks Greg. Very nicely done. I will have to show the wife on this one. Oh, your right on the bell, mine was un rung from UA-cam, Had to turn it back on.
I would get a big one. yea it takes longer to set up but the payout is a lot of surface area to work with and when doing small grinds it stays in the mortar better and if you make salsa you can put everything in the mortar and serve it, no extra dishes.
I just ordered one for the first time and it's a marble one like yours. I intend to use it for grinding camphor primarily, but I was wondering if grinding rice to clean it would make it safe to also grind herbs and things.
I want to use my marble mortar and pestle for crushing vitamins for my cat's dinners. I wonder if I should not use garlic to season it then since cats are allergic to garlic?
Thanks for this amazing video..this mortar and pestal made up of marbal or granait? I bougt onr mortar and pestal which looks kind a similar to one in video but shop guy said that it is made up of marbal and grinding is not required and it is required for stone mortar and pestal..i need your views on this sir!
Hi i have a question i watched your video And I got new mortal and pestle today And I just wash with hot water and soap And I grind some green chillies and garlic And I put straight to my food and I was eating my food and I realized the test of food it’s weird and I feel not good after so is that any problem like I eat not much but a 4 to 5 spoons But I feel the weird test right away and I stop eating my food You can tell me something about that y was happened
I condition marble mortar and pistle by grind rice then i wash it and then.... i use it with water only and run pistle then i saw white colour water on mortar which means marble powder is emmiting out ..... i repeat 3 times this process with water only....every time water colour turns to white marble colour... then i grind rice again and then wash it and then grind garlic and rock salt... now i want to grind almond and milk may i grind it till 10 minutes ...may marble powder mix with milk....what should i do ....so marble powder do not mix with milk?
It may stop after more use. It possibly could be that a lower quality of stone was used in your mortar and pestle and may never stop? Just keep grinding and washing and hopefully it will get better.
I haven't had one long enough to wear down. I would guess over a long time of use they would show some wear. I wouldn't think it's a problem unless you ground a hole through or you tasted grit in your food.
This is the only video me and my husband could find on UA-cam that addressed our questions about marble mortars... Thanks for making! 🙂

Thought we only cured it if it's the volcanic rock mortar that's already smooth .. but ya i guess we can season it

Good explanation 👏
It’s takes a lot of hard work at grinding 3 or 4 times but it will then last forever. Thank You So Much 😊
I never thought about this needing to be seasoned. Do not own one but learned something new.
Thank you so much for this info, I did everything exactly as you did, my mortar is now ready.

Thanks! This is the only video I could find on seasoning a marble mortar and pestle. Seasoning mine today!
Thanks for the video Greg. It's important to learn this sort of stuff as I'm honing my culinary skills.
I just received my mortar and pestle today. Thanks so much for posting this very informative video. I'll be giving your receipe a try.
I had no idea this needed to be done. So glad I ran across this video when I was about to use my for the first time
GREAT. VIDEO! I JUST RECEIVED MY PESTLE & MORTAR TODAY. WILL TRY THIS METHOD.
This answered a lot of questions for me. Thanks so much!

Thank you Greg, very helpful information.
wow i had no idea it took these steps to season it. thank you so much for sharing!
A critical piece of kitchen gear. Thanks for the demo

I got a small one about the same size as the one on the video. Make it personalized
Thank you, very informative!
I just got a marble mortar and pestle, I'm going to use it to make salsa.
Great info!

Do you recommend I season a granite mortar and pestle? Thanks BTW 💚💛 Go Pack Go 💚💛
Yes I would season a granite mortar and pestle.
Thanks

Maybe that particular one doesn't need it but I can't see any reason not to do it just to be sure. Always better safe than sorry just my opinion.
@@wisconsinGreg Thank you for a reply
Use bigger version . It's not enough for your hand even .

Hi i have a question i watched your video
And I got new mortal and pestle today
And I just wash with hot water and soap
And I grind some green chillies and garlic
And I put straight to my food and I was eating my food and I realized the test of food it’s weird and I feel not good after so is that any problem like I eat not much but a 4 to 5 spoons
But I feel the weird test right away and I stop eating my food
You can tell me something about that y was happened
Never use soap on a mortar and pestle! Perhaps re-season the mortar using Greg's advice and try again.
Don't eat to much chillies and garlic. Also check with your doctor for advice.
I feel like I’ve done all of these things and I am still getting white powder from the marble
Maybe your mortar and pestle isn't very high quality? You may want to consider returning it?
You are likely correct-a friend scooped one up for me from
Chinatown in NY. Thanks for the info!
I condition marble mortar and pistle by grind rice then i wash it and then....
i use it with water only and run pistle then i saw white colour water on mortar which means marble powder is emmiting out .....
i repeat 3 times this process with water only....every time water colour turns to white marble colour...

are you using a marble one?
I'm not sure if you would call it marble the outside is smooth like marble but the inside is rough.
Yes it's a Mable one .
@@sudzjay4609 Yeah I wasn't for sure it kinda looked ceramic in a way is why I asked.
If you want to buy a good one go for a granite one. Those are so good and solid .
I think little bit white come from marble when u crush like this is that kk
Do they wear down? I ask because some one gave me one and it looks worn. Idk if to use it or not 😣
I haven't had one long enough to wear down. I would guess over a long time of use they would show some wear. I wouldn't think it's a problem unless you ground a hole through or you tasted grit in your food.
@@wisconsinGreg thank you for your feed back. I seasond it and it works great. 😀
What if you don't have garlic?
I don't know I thought garlic was available worldwide.
@@wisconsinGreg it is but we don't have it rn
How would you season a wooden pestle and mortar?
I'm not sure about wooden ones exactly I've never had a wooden one.
Btw soap is not anti bacterial
Soap does get rid of bacteria because it has both a hydrophilic and hydrophobic property. With water it helps tear apart bacteria and wash it away.
My rice kept jumping out, I couldn't get it to grind into powder
I've never done rice myself but have seen on other videos that they soak it for 2hrs in warm water than dry for 6hrs before grinding.
@@wisconsinGreg that makes much more sense!! 😁
You can also drape a towel over the bowl leaving an opening only big enough for the pestle. That way anything that tries to jump out hits the towel
get a bigger size
Thanks
