I think this line/price point is a really good target, and you nailed it on the head: student/lower-level drummers looking to find something different. I think having nice just neutral, normal sounding drums (other than the character imparted by the depth/diameter) at a very affordable price point allows drummers to experiment and find/achieve sounds. Maybe someone is interested in trying out a low-tuned 14x8 snare compared to their 14x5 that came with their Pearl Export. Or maybe just an intermediate drummer just needs a side-snare, or something really specific for a gig, or a quick replacement.

Great review ...... Pearl have always had a non glamorous image but they make some good drums.

Must be my ears but they all sounded good to me. Great playing and micing make a large contribution, not surprisingly, to the overall sound. Thank you, as always, DR.

Glad to see more companies bringing out some decent drums at an affordable price range. I know if they were to upgrade with better wires and heads they would be really good ,but in doing so raises the price tag.Would love to hear them with the upgraded heads and wires,I bet a lot of people would be really surprised.

I have the 14"x6.5". I love it. Great snare drum. Changing the heads and putting on better snare wires (which I've done) makes this drum sound better too. Good review guy's. 🤘🏻

I know this old but what heads did you put on the drum?
What wires did you put on it?
Tight , medium or loose tuning?
How is it holding up if you still have it?

Enjoyable review. I thought they might have went with a 13x7 as this has been a common choice for some years now. But the 12x7 sounds like it had got that quality to it, a bit of pop with nice depth. At the prices you suggest I think they will do well. Pearl is always well made and unfussy with an affordable price tag.

The 14x6.5 reminds me a lot of the Maple Master Series Snare that they came out with about 2005 - 2006.

The two that stuck out to me the most are the 14 x 6.5, and the 13 x 5.
I might grab the 13 x 5, actually, seeing as I have a couple spare 13 inch heads, as I have the Pearl M1330 Piccolo.
I'd want an HD Dry on the 13 x 5, most likely.
I love the punchy, yet slightly higher pitched tone of the 13 - the best of two worlds, IMO.

I actually think the 6.5 sounded nice, but of course it would sound much better with replacement top and bottom heads. That 8 and 5 sounded really nice also. How would you say that this line of maple snare drums compares with the maple snares offered with the Decade series shell packs, and how much does something higher like a Masters snare or Sensitone Maple snare compare to this/is it worth it to buy this instead of a Sensitone or Masters provided that we change the heads and possibly the wires?

  • @Shauncat1

I have the 14x 6,5. I change the head with the reference coated head and it has a nice fat sound and attack. I added this snare drum to the other pearl snare drums i have in my collection ❤❤❤

I just bought one of these snares on my local music store for 7,200Php covert to USD about 150USD and it sounds astonishing and easy to tune specially at a very high tuning this snare really brings out that explosive and poppy sound but unfortunate for me it can’t handle my playing because I hit so hard that after 3songs from a high tuning it lowers to medium tuning.
It’s already a big upgrade for me I don’t have that much budget to buy a much more expensive snare but this snare sounds great for it’s price point.

Hmm.. The 14x8 didn't stand out as much as I hoped, the 14x6.5 sounds studio-friendly, the 14x5.5 was pretty cutting and nice, the 13x5 rung a little more.. The 12x7 doesn't stand out either... But I really wanted to see the 14x8 really shine... Good review though!

Yamaha Recording Custom 22x16, clear Evans EQ4 on batter and reso, 7" centre port in reso, tuned low but with a bit of tone coming through, single Evans EQ Pad in the drum, mic'd with Beyerdynamic M88. Cheers!

I've got the 12x7 it's the perfect snare for me, all the picollo top end, with a full bodied bottom end. Sounds like a pearl firecracker snare, that's been to the gym. 😂

The snare wire tension on all drums were a little too tight for my taste, choking the tonal qualities of each drum, and projecting an annoying overtone. This may also be due to the cheapo MIC drum heads. But these snare drums are actually very nice and versatile, well built, and great for the price.

14x8 great body, loved it. 13x5 amazing crack, good for a secondary snare. 14x6.5 good but nothing special, 14x5 didn´t liked it, 12x7 hated it, too much ring. Nice products. Great video!!!
