After the zipper slider broke on my jacket, I went down the rabbit hole of looking for ways to repair or replace it. Luckily, in a different UA-cam video, a lady provided a tutorial and she mentioned purchasing the repair parts from Sailrite. I found your website and then these videos. Thanks so much for the information and education. I would have never believed there was so much to zippers. This gentleman makes the information interesting, too.
Thank you so much for this tutorial on removing a zipper toggle because it prevented me from removing a very involved zipper I had just sewn for a project!!
Thank you so much. I'm shortening the shafts on a pair of boots. I couldn't have done it without the zipper coming apart. Now it's a DIY and a lot of saved money.
Have to say this... best zipper video. Quick, to the point and many different solutions. I jambed a staple into it, covered it with a piece of fabric. Thanks
Oh my Gosh!!! Thank you so much for posting this. I was driving myself crazy looking for a tutorial on how to shorten the plastic teeth/sport zipper for a jacket I am making. Melting the teeth together is perfect for my jacket!!! I am going to share this with my sewing class!!!
This is awesome. I have this one bag that has always been very special to me and then one sad day, its zipper stop and slider came off and I couldn't use it anymore. I kept it exactly for this moment. This is the moment that I have been waiting for 3 years! Now I finally know how to fix it! Thank you very much. [PS. I couldn't take it to professionals to have it fixed because it's quite expensive here and I don't have enough money.]
Thanks for your great comments! Let me know if you have any questions regarding zippers or any other video at www.sailrite.com PS --- I have deleted the comment from the rude viewer.
I came across this video looking on how to create a stop. Love these different applications. However I would recommend cutting about an inch above where I want the stop and remove those teeth. This way it allows me to have a small amount of just zipper tape to finish off my project so it has a professional neat finish as opposed to the zipper just ending with a raw edge. That would also eliminate the zipper tape raveling because it would be sewn into the edge of the project. Thanks! I needed this!
I like the melting one side. What about if the teeth are like copper or metal?? Just to fix one side from stopping. Cuz my zipper is missing teeth so to stop it from sliding off... don't feel like replacing the whole thing. 😕
Thanks! I have several purses and totes that have too long zippers. They hang outside the bag, and I have to repeatedly tuck them in. Now I can fix them!
I wonder if you could possibly offer me some advice or send me in the right direction. I need to figure out how to make an open ended/separating zipper from parts? I'll be buying meters of nylon zipper that I will need to create a zipper for use in a winter coat. The top stops seem easy but I can't find instructions for the bottom stops that have it separating. I would also like to make it a double zipper. Would it be easier, harder or different instructions for a metal zipper? Thank you so much for any advice that you can offer!
+Melanie Drew The issue here is the fact that if you want a "finished" (sometimes called jacket style) zipper you must purchase them already manufactured in a certain length with a starter box and starter post already installed by the manufacture. So... you have a choice of two types of zippers "Continuous" or "Finished". A continuous zipper will not separate (it has not starter pin or starter box) while a finished zipper will separate since the starter box and pin have been added by the manufacture. Adding a stater box and starter pin to a continuous zipper is not possible, so you will not find them on the market.
If you are trying to make a finished or jacket zipper out of a continuous zipper it cannot be done, sorry. Email me with more info on they type of zipper you have and I can better answer your questions. ericg@sailrite.com
+Jurica Enerio You cannot cut out metal teeth and sink them in as a stop, but you can cover the end of the zipper with a webbing tab or binding tape and sew it in place as a stop.
Stainless steel stoppers! Yeah! So that's what ya do when your machine won't sew over zippers. Using leftover teeth look great, but ya gotta own a hot knife.

Hello, can I send you a running jacket to repair the Zipper??
No, sorry. We supply parts for the DIY market, we do not do the custom sewing.
Excellent video
What a GREAT idea!! Good you use an old clothes iron? I wouldn't use my good iron.
You may use a soldering iron
Creating your own stop method: can this be effective for the metallic zipper as well?

If you don't own a hot knife (like our Edge) you can use a wood burning tool or soldering gun.
Owwwo...now i can fix them....
