- Say goodbye to craters with this method!
I am always looking for ways to prevent craters (craters are little holes that form in small flooded sections of your icing), and I recently heard you can prevent them by poking holes in your icing (thanks to a tip I saw done by @thegoodiesgoddess 🙏🏻), and I had to try it! I don’t know the science behind it, I don’t even understand how anyone figured this out, but it works! I was skeptical at first, which is why I made the squiggly lines here with my outline consistency icing, but I have since tried this technique dozens of times on different cookies without the squiggly lines, and it has worked like a dream.
This is a game changer for me because I am always careful about not letting my base layer dry too much before adding top details. And while the squiggly line is still a great preventative measure, and I do still use it, it isn’t fool proof if your flood layer is already very dry. But with this technique, you can wait hours in between flooding and detail work without any issues of craters! You can poke holes in a bare cookie, fully dried icing, or icing that is just crusted over, and I am confident it will work for you. 10/10 highly recommend!

I was really disappointed not to see a perfectly smooth rainbow at the end of a video discussing how to prevent craters and instead getting icing macrame where literally no one would notice a divot. 🤷🏻♀️
Right what’s the point?

@@applesong01 no? Have you seen the moon before?
You did not just call that a rainbow 💀
I imagine some sad beige mom ordering this for her kids' 5th birthday party 😂😂❤
I'd assume it has to do with surface tension and how the icing will want to grab on to the edges of the hole and pool in the middle but since it's such a small hole it'd bead up and form a small dome shape. my guess is that that lends support to the rest of the icing

Thank you so much!
i was so confused why there was no color until the end 😭
they look so good!
I'm STILL confused. It's meant to look like one of those macrame wall hangings, but it is most definitely also a rainbow, AND it's for a baby shower. Babies need color, and I'll bet dollars to donuts the nursery is also lacking it if this is what the damn baby shower theme was. This sad biege aesthetic is all for the parents. Plus the creator got SUPER defensive when someone made a pride joke about the colorless rainbow, so something is definitely off with the vibes here.

Your cookies are beautifully painted, but the Sad Beige Mom(tm) wicker rainbow taken to cookie form just makes me sad.
I’m sorry but the colors on that cookie look like something a beige mom would bake 😭💀
It’s called slip casting/molding/attachment. It’s used in ceramics.
Basically the consistency of the material you are using has in some way plates/crystaline elements which need to stack/be smooth.
Honestly this can even go for nails/painting.
You don’t want a flat surface like a mirror/glass to work off of, why, because the material you are using has TEXTURE/shape and if it’s one a flat surface it’s gonna be the most textured thing.
If the surface is buffed/scratched/pinholed/lined/jagged there’s more surface area per square inch meaning there’s more room for the the ‘clumpy material’ to level out/sink in/create its own surface/ even tension rate’ there’s no reason to stack oddly when they can have surface area to be both above and below level thus reaching an equilibrium.
If it’s wavy it needs waves to match it/counter it. To get the best friction on a flat surface you need another completely flat surface flat-flat means there’s absolutely no gaps and all atoms/elements are perfectly aligned. Think of how a microscope slide works. Flat-flat
If you look at how to lay tile it’s similar to this you don’t have a smooth surface to smooth surface you go rough texture to rough texture because they even out perfectly and have the best friction grip on one another thus the best surface tension.
ty!
This cookie design is so beautiful! The texture reminded me of macrame, but I see in the comments you said it's an embroidered ivory rainbow. It's so lovely. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! Yes definitely similar to macrame. You get it!😊
yes reminded me of macrame too !
I use to get craters. If the consistency is perfect it won't crater. This is a great technique for beginners. Keep going. It looks great.
She finally made a straight pride version of the rainbow for yall
I actually just saw a video about this and the reason it works is because it prevents the bottom layer from sucking up all the moisture from the top layer of icing 😊
It's giving... sad beige baby lol
That cookie is so simple yet so fricken pretty!!! ❤ I love it
POV: beige mums when their kid wants a rainbow in their room
I’ve been asking how to keep icing from cratering for awhile now. This is the first video I’ve seen to help. Can’t wait to try this❤
How tf is it a rainbow if it has no colour 🥲
A lot of things are called rainbows when they are not. The only true rainbow has 7 colors. This is just a cookie.
@@hartworkcookieco there is no universe where a rainbow is solid white and has absolutely no colour to it at all. If you want to be technical, this would be a fog bow, but it looks a lot more like a scarf tbh. It's no where close to being any kind of rainbow.
@@saxumbonumthis is an embroidered rainbow design that matches the decor at a baby shower. It is directly inspired by the inspo sent to me by the client. She loved it.
Ok. The cookie is beautiful you did a wonderful job. But can I just complain about how baby decor loves to desaturate rainbows? Like all the tome? It's not a rainbow if its white and brown rainbows have all the colors. Don't be scared of colors in your homes especially for your babies
I would feel too bad eating your cookies. They are too stunning to eat😊
You’re very sweet. Thank you❤
The patience of cookie decorators is saintly
This cookie is so cute!! I love the little tassels at the bottom!
So talented 😊
🥹 thank you so much!
how is this a rainbow? It's all one colour??
think of it like stacking a 2 tier cake: if u stack one on top of the other, it's will start to sink in some places cuz the weight is too heavy. but if u add dowels to it, it will stay up. ur essentially making ur "dowels" wit the icing that fills up in the holes once u flood it, so it holds the icing up. i hope that makes sense 😂
You would think the holes would be counterproductive, having the icing sink in and cause dimples. Idk why this works but I am fascinated
When she said craters I legit thought she said creators and was talking about how she wanted to prevent the creation of influencers
It has to do with the physics of what causes cracks. The holes create a more equal distribution of force amongst the cookie that stabilizing the frosting without taking it too it’s breaking point.
I took strength of materials as an undergraduate and I feel like having cookies would have made it so much more interesting.
It works because it adds structural support! Think like rebar inside of concrete!
Good eye; steady hand! WOW
Thank you so much!
I thought we were gonna get a rainbow. These are pretty to.
I always wonder if these cookies are hard or soft. The design is beautiful but I’m not sure it would taste good.
I love when people taste these bc they’re always surprised by the texture and flavor. One person once described my cookies like this, “I was expected something like a pretty girl with no personality- but this cookie has both!”😄 I always loved that feedback. I know some people make hard cookies that lack in flavor, but when your livelihood depends on it, the flavor is the priority.
@@hartworkcookieco I love that! Thank you for replying 💜

Glad you enjoy it!

The surface wants to be smooth for the same reason a bubble is round, so I imagine that it just gives it a better surface area to cling to or fill in

Lol thank you!
A white rainbow? Interesting
it's because the frosting has a place to go meaning into the cookie for more stable lines of frosting
Love the macrame design ❤
Your cookies look amazing❤
Aww thank you!
it works just like why it works when u put a squiggly line of frosting it gives it room to flow out and spred evenly
It give you brain and hand eye coordination a target to go to.
Basically my guess and I don’t know much about cookies but the icing is actually trapping gas in those holes and that gas is suspending the icing keeping it smooth
Interesting hack and great cookie 😁
When you said bare cookie my brain flashed "bear cookie" 🐻.
nawt the beige rainbow :( its cute as like a macrame though (i probably spelled that wrong)
sad beige cookies make me sad....my cousin is a sad grey mother and her twins room is so depressing.
A lot of us don’t know what you mean when you say craters could you show us a video comparing a cookie with and without craters for us non bakers 😢
Ahh! Good call. I will definitely do a demo next time I decorate. But they’re tiny holes that form in your icing as it dries.
@@hartworkcookieco yaaay! I’ll keep an eye out

All you weirdos saying that's a rainbow, it's a macrame arc, why on Earth it's a cookie I don't know but that's what it looks like it's supposed to be
It reminds me of a dreamcatcher
I love your work. The cookies are beautifully done. Do you have to do this repeatedly for 2 or 3 dozen cookies?
Thank you 🥹. I try not to do too many of the same design if it’s super involved. Some cookies can take up to 30 mins each, so I try to limit those to 2-3 per order. I have an “elaborate” tier in my pricing, which allows for more complex designs, but I have 2 dozen order limit on that tier so that I don’t get burnt out lol 😅
That isnt a rainbow, thats a cookie spaghetti
Rainbow? Rainbows have colours, That’s just a sad beige arc
What conservatives think rainbows looked like before gay people
The cookie threw me off when it had no color but it’s very pretty still!

It’s an embroidered ivory rainbow
You know what makes a 'rainbow' is all the colours........
@@SarcasmicGlory yes. A real rainbow in the sky has 7 colors.
@@hartworkcookieco 😂🙌👌
@@hartworkcookieco well done 👍👌 so it's not a 'rainbow' then is it... A rainbow is a refraction and dispersion of light if you want to be pedantic... 😂
I need to see it without the squiggles..
My video with the ”baby” banner demonstrates the same technique without the squiggly lines.
Cracks mean you’re not using the right icing or you’re not putting enough. That’s like saying why icing doesn’t spread on a cake without crumbling, well if you don’t have enough icing you will scrape the cake.
Craters* not cracks. Craters are when the icing collapses in on itself and creates holes in the icing after it dries.
I always hear yall talking about cratering but I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE!!
That’s because we do everything we can to avoid them lol. They’re little holes that form in small sections of icing. I’ll try to do a comparison video soon.
Gorgeous work! How do your hands not cramp while squeezing out all that icing?
Than you!
as a grown adult i like the beige aesthetic but i feel really sad for all the kids that were raised like this lol
sure you can learn to appreciate certain aesthetics but you gotta leave those kids be and allow them to develop a personality of their own.. hopefully this isnt the kind of person to actively prevent everything but those more matured "blend in with the furniture" style trends onto their kids.. kids arent aesthetic, it sucks to be treated like a well groomed puppy that belongs and is owned by whos supposed to be raising you.. speaking from experience my "aesthetic" is as nonexistant as it is now cause of that sort of nonsense XD literally things didnt turn around till way too late
fancy ass cookie
This is probably a really silly question but do you eat the biscuits, or are they purely decorative?
Not silly! Some people save the cookies, but I always encourage people to eat them haha. Definitely for consumption. The taste is the best part 🎉
@@hartworkcookieco In that case they must be truly delicious, for they're absolutely beautiful!
@@Dojan5 thank you!
Can you show a side by side? With and without the holes?
❤
I’ve heard about this technique too. Does it work for all RI recipes?
How thick do you make your cookies?
Would be cool if i could hear what you're saying. Maybe next video you could see if theres an option to amplify the narration?
Hmm, I’m sorry you can’t hear it. I do have what I said almost verbatim written out in the description, too.
Sad beige rainbow cookie next to a sad beige baby onesie and a sad beige baby cookie (probably for a sad beige baby shower)
That looks more delicious than my husband😅😅
Why don't you just poke the holes BEFORE you put any icing on the cookies? I'm crafty, so if it were me, I'd make it easier/faster by designing than making a square shaped hole stamper with tiny nail hammered into a pc of wood & put a handle on the back of it. make it large enough for every cookie. That way u just press it on each cookie to make holes.
thought that was gonna be the purple horseshoe marshmallow from lucky charms
