Max, please do a video where you demonstrate this NINJA walking techniques I was reading about in the comments. I bet that will be a fun video to make. Also one part that was missing was gimbal + IBIS at the same time. Does that give you even more floating video stability or does it not matter ? It would be nice to know what you can do in order to get better more stable video, if you are walking or doing handheld shots, panning etc. What to do when you do not have access to that equipment, run and gun type situation. Great video !
I think they'll make it better with a firmware update. There is a reason the Sony overheats. I'd like to see somebody (If Panasonic won't) hack the firmware to put more juice into the VAF so it works better. I'll happily trade some heat for that. :)
I have a GH5 and I'm interested in gimbal-mounting it for the occasional shot. Obviously AF isn't quite so hot as we'd all like it to be, though I've found that I can almost entirely work around that by half-pressing the shutter. Because of this, I'm now awaiting a wireless shutter release in the post and look forward to testing it for this scenario - a setup I'd prefer to full-auto anyway as it gives me more control over when I want to trigger fast changes. What would you recommend as the smallest/lightest gimbal that can support the GH5 + nocticron (a combo I saw you use in the review with @PhotoJoseph) plus the receiver for a wireless shutter release?
So. Got the crane, also got the Lumix CCI cable so I can replicate a shutter half-press via the rocker switch on the gimbal's handle. Given that I almost exclusively have my subject centred for gimbal shots, this pretty much solved *all* of my autofocus worries. Heck, it even seems to cope with a VideoMic pro on top as well... not that I'll do that much when I'm loving gimbal + 180fps so much, and can always record externally with the H5 if need be.

This new I.S 2.0 is sick! Thanks for nice review Max.
Yeah, I think you need to get Joseph back :) The IBIS wasn't even close to the gimbal, but then I suspect that it's not really designed for that kind of use, more for static hand held stabilisation
Can you test IBIS without Dual IS and gimbal together? I wondering if this can help to midigate some minor up and down shakes or if it does not work well. Would be intresting to see
Mambo Lukas it does help, but what the best option is walking like a ninja (seriously) roll your foot when you walk. Many people get this wrong and it adds a lot of z axis movement especially with single handed gimbals. We'll look into this more later (gimbal+IBIS)
There is a test here for what you are asking ua-cam.com/video/7cRQVXWy9p0/v-deo.html Testing the Panasonic GH5 IBIS and Dual IS with Beholder EC1 Gimbal Stabilizer!
How to get smooth shot when running with Alexmos? I'm testing Letus Helix (very first unit). It has issues e.g. 80-90Hz buzz, Tilt strength has to be increased for default profile. Letus seems to be much smoother than these.
In the video tests, gimbal every time. However, IBIS I think still has big advantage for still photography when slow shutter speed is needed. Thanks, Max. Good tests.
For me, the dual is allows me to pick up quick shots handheld that I would never dream of doing on the 5d3 or my Ursa Mini. However, it just doesn't simulate tracking shots like my 3 axis gimbal.
I think just in running the gimbal shows clear deference. And on the other situations they are almost the same with slightly improvement on the gimbal. Thanks for your test.I really impressed with the ability of the Gh5.
There's still no substitution for a gimbal other than a good steadycam AND a good handling skill. And what a bad rolling shutter on the A6300. Even a slight bump on your gimbal and the wobbles show. The GH5 does much better in that respect even handheld.
Hey Max! I've seen a lot of tests on the dual IS stabilization of the GH5 and the consensus is similar to what you discovered: it's great but it's not as good as a gimbal. My question is that most of the handheld dual IS tests comparing it to gimbals is just that... hand held. Is there anyway you could do a test of it on a two handle rig/mount or cage set up (i.e. the varavon Zeus two handle setup or something similar)? I'm curious to know if the shake we get in the dual IS can be attributed to having hands directly on the camera and if that gets alleviated when placed in a solid cage or handheld rig/mount where hands are on the rig instead. I can't seem to find any YT videos showcasing it in that situation. Also, how much cleaner does the shake get if we apply a little post stabilization to it? Or will it distort the image too much? Thanks! Love the videos, keep it up!
Nice Max. I think you should make a video with the same Gh5 equipment on a ordinary Steadycam, doing the same moves on this video and it should look very smooth and professional as long as you're used to handle a steadycam and still get good videos using steadycam with a camera without IBIS.
There's only some slight jittering (is this the correct word?) in the A6300 video, which an in-lens stabilizer could take good care of. On the other hand the IBIS footage has a lot of roll in it, which is a pain in the ass to correct in post.
Great video Max. I think the IBIS works pretty damn well on the GH5. By the way that music in the background really works for your video. Not to distraction and just the right volume level. If you get bored check out my vlog style review of the GH5 in 4k 60p.
Tech Connect Thanks I'll check it out. This is the second upload. The first one has music at -12db and it was too much so I took it down to -20 and re uploaded.
Hey I just caught this, didn't know how I missed it, it's a great comparison. Apples and oranges. sometimes you need the handheld look, sometimes the gimbal. I broke my wrist in Jan and went to handheld to shoot a Buch of jobs, and I got good at it fast, and actually started preferring the handheld look over the gimbal. while nothing beats the gimbal smoothness, it seems overplayed now, and a good handheld is always more "human" if you know what I mean. back in 2017 it was 'gimbal gimbal gimbal" . Now, I'm back to the old school back to the roots. Like great 70's films.. all handheld . I may get that lens!
Great vid as usual Max. Although that isn't what you would call a parallax shot. That was a spinning or orbit shot. (Parallax is when camera moves sideways and keeps facing same direction. Just like looking out of a train window. And it relates to how the near objects appear to move faster past the camera than the objects further away. ) :)
biscuitsalive it was going to be a parallax shot with a little bit of panning but as I started talking I mentioned Michael Bay and the rest was history lol.
Max Yuryev :) don't get the bay involved. P.s. Would you say just go for it on the zhiyun crane if I wanted a gimbal for gh4/a7s? Or should I wait to see what's coming out. (Wondering if the tech is reaching a pinnacle that will only slightly improve from this point.)
I have a couple of GH5s. Normally they are on tripods, but I have 3 music videos booked. Tripods will not work so I’m considering hand held or a gimbal. I expect to do push-pull moves, orbits and elevator shots. I’m leaning towards a gimbal because I don’t think I’m going to be able to shoot the same shot a bunch of times. What do you think?
Dual IS is great for shots with minimal movement, like rotating in place and slow walking shots. Gimbal is great for for everything: running, panning, ground moving shots, aerial rising shots (w/ monopod), inside vehicle shots, etc.
Have you had a chance to see if there is a big difference between the V1 lens with IS compared to the V2 using IS2 ? Maybe not a official test just off hand if its a big difference.
I noted the revealing shot behind the bushes. I've made shots like this with the Canon XC-15, which has excellent stabilization. When you use the XC-15 slo-mo--which is very good---you can make in the shot(s) normal motion and play them back and they look amazing and smooth. Sure, the video is in 1080p, not 4k, but it still looks great just like it's on a top notch gimbal or slider. The good news is 1080p on the GH5 really looks good--much better than on the GH4. So, you can save a lot of time shooting all kinds of shots in slow motion that will simulate slider shots almost perfectly. Especially since the GH5 enables you to place the slo-mo rate almost anywhere.
Hi Max, 1) can this Gimbal support a GH5 with the 12-35mm? 2) What IBIS be different if you had some kind of grip below the GH5 (even a Joby Gorillapod a la Neistat)?
There's surprisingly little difference in many ways. I think I'd have expected the gimbal to grossly outperform the IBIS, but it didn't most of the time. Personally, I'm a GX80 user, and the IBIS seems to be just as good as on the GH5 (AND the continuous AF on the GX80s is in the Sony class - certainly on the two I own....)
The gimbal seems to cause quite a bit of microjitter whereas the Dual OIS does not but has more range of motion in its movements. Clearly combining the two should be the best option if available. I'm thinking it might be best to stick with sliders/rails if you want those moving shots or a traditional glidecam/steadicam if you want to walk around. It takes more practice and up-front work to balance... but the footage is MUCH cleaner and easier to level out in post if needed.
The gimbal is clearly better in some use cases (especially running), but it's surprisingly close. I think the gimbal had more fine jitters but did better at smoothing our larger movements, while the in-body stabilization was better for situations like steady shots where it's mostly small shakes. But honestly, all of this footage would be usable, depending what you're going for, and that's pretty amazing.
This is exactly what I was looking for.. I just bought a ronin M stabilizer for use with my a6300... i did some running tests with it this weekend which included jumping off a wall about 1 1/2 ft high and found the Ronin to be very steady.. I don't have a camera with IS, but in this test, it appeared to me the gimbal was much smoother... Which is consistent with what I saw with the Ronin.
hchattaway Yes. If you have an stabilized lens or IBIS (or both) it's even better. Both of these lenses are stabilized but I turned them off for the rest.
What's the deal with my GH5? I can't get the ibis to turn on. I run a metabones speedbooster with Canon lenses. The ibis in the menu is greyed out and only works randomly. I am in movie mode + v-log L
Very usable IBIS, not something I want to see personally in cinema, more of a Fincher style is my preference, but very usable for vloging or run and gun maybe weddings or even film work if you are into that whole Bourne thing, than you just need to shake camera some more. :D
Bye bye my Steadicam Merlin with ARM and Vest. Bye bye Gimballs, Dual IS 2 all the way. Now Panasonic, please fix AF. Then release a new 42.5mm f1.2 with Dual IS 2, also some Anamorphic lenses with Dual IS 2. Cause we want to be shooting 6K anamorphic handheld with GH5 like on a gimball, right? Which other lenses do you think they need to update to Dual IS 2? And by the way, what's the difference between Dual IS 1 and 2?
It does for me. I was never able to calibrate my Steadicam Merlin good enough for my GH3 anyway, the performance of in-camera and lens IBIS is much better. All I need if I want to do big movements is to learn to walk a bit weird to keep the camera level and not bounce it around while walking. I think the benefit of operating the camera itself compared with strapping yourself into a steadicam arm and vest, you get to save 5-10 kilos of weight and more flexibility in moving the camera around, I think overall the camera movements could be better due to the freedom that you get.
My decision on whether or not to buy the GH5 has mainly involved several hours of staring at Vadim's face - at varying levels of focus. Still undecided, waiting for Sony to add a decent fully articulated touch screen and solve overheating at NAB.
Jackson Stone i think its a bug, but if I use the non- movie drive dial, like just M not the movie M, then I can set it in the movie stabilizer settings, but the icon disappears when it actually starts recording
I love my crane but one of its biggest strengths is also its biggest weakness. Simple Software. Coming from a Simple BGC gimbal to this was such a relief for initial setup. That said it leaves much to be desired with the app. I think there should be a simple and advanced mode, which would increase the crane's potential. Seeing the IBIS makes me really hate the fact that my X-T2 lacks it. haha
Thanks! Will be fine if you will put both videos on the screen also. It just will be easy to understand what is better. And what will be if GH5 use with Gimbal. Сравните пожалуйста GH5 и Sony A9. Фото, видео, стаб и Rolling shutter.
I recently bought the a6300 and took some test shots. Idk why but my footage looks pretty noisy in low light. Does anyone have any suggestions? Btw, I'm using the kit lens(16-50mm).
Surprised how close the Gh5 was in that test. I think in some cases it can replace a gimbal. However, I would imagine with the Gh5 you have to put more effort in to keep it steady, whereas it's easy to hold the gimbal with one hand, and still be able to interact with your subject (if you have small children this is a plus!). Also, the gimbal is much smoother for panning thanks to the motors.
Max, nice short test, 1.Did the AF was on in Vlog test in both cameras? Its obvious the sony was in focus while GH5 was not 2.Woud be great if you added a ibis+warp vs gimbal test, usually warp wont save the day, but perhaps ibis brings it a step closer to gimbal, and into "usable" category. Thanks!
Rostislav Alexandrovich Yes AF on both with the best settings we found after almost two weeks focusing on that (and having photo Joseph come) and I used the shutter to pre focus on my face.
Understanding that you're not a huge fan of the EM1 ii for video, when you pair it with the Zuiko 12-100 Pro and have their Sync IS it absolutely smothers the GH5's Dual IS. IIRC none of your tests included that particular piece of glass.
Francesco Manfredi If I had one I would do it, so hopefully on if the many people who own both will! From my experiences so far they are similar with the GH5 being slightly better.
Max it would be great if you can test the improved A7riii stabilisation against the GH5. I haven't pulled the trigger yet on the GH5 due to the autofocus, and now the A7riii with such good autofocus , I want to see whether it is in any way comparable to the GH5.
The gimbal does come out slightly ahead, but in most cases, especially for photography purposes (instead of extremely smooth videography), the GH5 makes a gimbal pretty unnecessary. That's quite amazing. Also, I wonder how the GH5 would be on the gimbal along with IBIS!
the right test it will be not handheld, but to put the gh5 on a monopod, with fluid head and handle. because i use it with a monopod, and sincerely is almost the same as gimbal.so next test try it with a monopod.thanks Max ;)
I feel the dual IS IBIS is more naturally stable whereas the gimbal is also good but looks a little unnatural. By the way, what auto focus settings did you set up on the GH5? Cheers
hi there Max! I'm planning to buy a Gh5 but I have a doubt, can I use in body stabilization while I'm using the metabones? thank you very much for your work!
That's ok for videos. But for steady handheld telephoto shots the ibis is must. Who wants to carry that gimbal all the time with extra batteries and stuff. Also Sony's ibis on a6600 is worst in comparison to panny.
I think the GH5 IBIS comes out better on the still shot. The gimbal was definitely jittery. Neither, of course, was perfectly steady, but the movement in the GH5 was smooth, and the movements in the Sony were jittery---like the jittery movement you get trying to hold a non-stabilized camera steady. (That was probably because trying to hold a camera with no stabilization was exactly what Max was doing). Duh!
Hey max! I finally saved up a few bucks to get the metabones speed booster for my g7 and sigma 18-35 1.8 lens. I am now stuck on if I should get the XL or ultra. I really can't tell the difference and they are the same price. One is .64 and the other is .71. My objective is to use this for some still images and mostly video. Thanks for the advice also please reply with a affiliate link on bnh to the one you suggest for me so I can support you.
CER Thanks Cer! You can use any of our B&H links (we have them in the description) and if you buy after you click it will work. I would go with the ultra for better compatibility if you get a different M43 camera in the future. The 1/3 stop difference is very small.
Nice video Max! I'm interested to understand if just DUAL I.S. of GH5s is sufficient instead of 5-axys stabilizations of GH5? What do you think? Can you make a video with GH5s with just DUAL I.S.? Thanks! :-)
From the little i've used the GH5 the stabilisation is great for some applications. It was clear in all of these tests that it's smoother to have an actual gimbal. The "vlogging" and "running towards camera" shots were particularly poor on the GH5 in comparison.
Thanks so much! So helpful! I can save money and just buy a gimbal for my Fuji XT2. The IBIS does not look good for running shots and the gimbal is superior for motion shots
Very close race. But, did you consider how much effort you used while stabilizing them? I guess that you have to concentrate more handheld. I'm oldschool and use a GH4 with a steadicam :)
Funny how much hate the GH5 gets, just because its not good at vloging. Who the f... cares? People thing its a must have for a new camera, why? I hate the vloging era on UA-cam tbh. Everyone needs to film his boring life and put it on UA-cam. (No real hate, got 2 vlogs aswell) Get over it, the GH 5 is a great camera and most Sony fanboys dont want to admit it. The autofocus is not so good? I dont care, ill film with manual focus. I cant wait for my GH5 to arrive. A camera is just as good as the filmmaker behind it.

Gimbal wins. But the stabilization of the GH5 is solid. Hate them for messing up autofocus even more. :((

Good job guys. The ibis/dual IS is magic. I shot an entire music vid handheld and it looks like it was shot with a gimbal. Call me impressed.
ok impressed ;)
Hey impressed!

Not sure if this is answered in the comments, but what stabilizers do you keep on the gh5 when on a gimbal/steadycam.
The a6300 didnt look up to standard with the gimbal, was it balanced correctly? ive seen better footage with the crane and the a6300...
Nice comparison...
Please let me know which one has better ibis out of x t4, a6600, gh5 or any other..

Thank you for all the wonderful videos you make. Please make a detail review on the pentax k1.
Charbax you're crazy if you think this IBIS system can replace a glidecam
It does for me. I was never able to calibrate my Steadicam Merlin good enough for my GH3 anyway, the performance of in-camera and lens IBIS is much better. All I need if I want to do big movements is to learn to walk a bit weird to keep the camera level and not bounce it around while walking. I think the benefit of operating the camera itself compared with strapping yourself into a steadicam arm and vest, you get to save 5-10 kilos of weight and more flexibility in moving the camera around, I think overall the camera movements could be better due to the freedom that you get.
hi bro. give what advice to take the best wide lens for a6500?
Old video but wow.
Probably depends on where you're shooting and the time you have/don't have and the permits you have/don't have.
I wonder how optical stabilisation would compare (good one, not some cheap lens)
My decision on whether or not to buy the GH5 has mainly involved several hours of staring at Vadim's face - at varying levels of focus. Still undecided, waiting for Sony to add a decent fully articulated touch screen and solve overheating at NAB.
I thought everone who purchases the GH5 recieved a free Vadim......is this not the case?
you'll still be waiting for months to come, I don't think Sony will deliver an articulating screen anytime soon.
Marek Larwood Same here.
How about the GH5 on the gimbal? Idk about replacing the gimbal but adding to the smoothness would be cool
Question when I go to "Operation Mode" is inaccessible. Selecting it gives me the error message "This menu item can't be set". Any ideas?
Jackson Stone i think its a bug, but if I use the non- movie drive dial, like just M not the movie M, then I can set it in the movie stabilizer settings, but the icon disappears when it actually starts recording
I love my crane but one of its biggest strengths is also its biggest weakness. Simple Software. Coming from a Simple BGC gimbal to this was such a relief for initial setup. That said it leaves much to be desired with the app. I think there should be a simple and advanced mode, which would increase the crane's potential. Seeing the IBIS makes me really hate the fact that my X-T2 lacks it. haha
Should we activate the sensor image stabilization on Gimbal or not?
Fz2000 review please
I would like to hear what you think about the camera you spoke so highly about the fz1000
Really nice tests! GH5 stabalization is very impressive. But doesn't quite replace the use of a gimbal + IBIS.
Doge noisey due to slow lens which means higher aperture and higher iso. Hope u have a faster lens by now bc that camera is amazing
Can you mount a Rode mic pro on the a6300 with the crane?
LuisLiftsTV yes
any comparison on screen brightness and LCD touch control ?
Victor Lo Panasonic better with both.
Max Yuryev i want to see if gh5 with ibis on gimbal. just how steady can things get
At 2:39 I keep thinking: “It doesn’t matter how good your IBIS is if your shot is out of focus.”
Did you have the electronic stabilization also turned on in the GH5?
But what about if you put the GH5 using dualIS on a gimbal?
Hey Max i just wondered if u used different logs on both cameras?
Cause the gh5 looks much more flat than the 6300..
Max, nice short test,
1.Did the AF was on in Vlog test in both cameras? Its obvious the sony was in focus while GH5 was not
2.Woud be great if you added a ibis+warp vs gimbal test,
usually warp wont save the day, but perhaps ibis brings it a step closer to gimbal, and into "usable" category.
It would be great a comparison also with the g85 dual i.s 2.0
Rationalific max used the gimbal + is in the autofocus video if you'd like to see that before he makes a dedicated video on it. cheers.
gimbals are not for photography...... tripods are
the right test it will be not handheld, but to put the gh5 on a monopod, with fluid head and handle. because i use it with a monopod, and sincerely is almost the same as gimbal.so next test try it with a monopod.thanks Max ;)
I feel the dual IS IBIS is more naturally stable whereas the gimbal is also good but looks a little unnatural. By the way, what auto focus settings did you set up on the GH5? Cheers
Hey man, do you have any vids where you talk about picture profiles you use on the 6500? Struggling with it...
hi there Max! I'm planning to buy a Gh5 but I have a doubt, can I use in body stabilization while I'm using the metabones? thank you very much for your work!
+Rata del Desierto Yes!
That's ok for videos. But for steady handheld telephoto shots the ibis is must. Who wants to carry that gimbal all the time with extra batteries and stuff. Also Sony's ibis on a6600 is worst in comparison to panny.
Would have been nice if you did the IBIS+gimbal combo too ;-)
did you use e-stabilization on GH5 as well? you know, it's different than I.S.
For EF or M43 Whats a good lens that works on a gimbal?
I think the GH5 IBIS comes out better on the still shot. The gimbal was definitely jittery. Neither, of course, was perfectly steady, but the movement in the GH5 was smooth, and the movements in the Sony were jittery---like the jittery movement you get trying to hold a non-stabilized camera steady. (That was probably because trying to hold a camera with no stabilization was exactly what Max was doing).
Duh!
Dual IbIs plus gimbal and after effect stabilization should do the trick!
Max Yuryev thanks a lot for the reply I will order it!
Well they are closed now guess I have to wait
Gimbal still the King thanks for the video you rock!!
Omg! I can't believe the GH5 performed so well! I thought it would be a blowout. It definitely isn't. Some shots even look better.
Max :) What do you think,, can Panasonic fix autofocus in future?
I'd like to see the ibis with adapted glass and metabones speed booster on that 18-35. If it works better than Sony ibis, it's a major win imo.
Is the ibis on the GH5 the same as in the G85? I read that the GH5 is superior
Gh5 is improved.
Thanks so much! So helpful! I can save money and just buy a gimbal for my Fuji XT2. The IBIS does not look good for running shots and the gimbal is superior for motion shots
Would love to see a test with the GH5 + one of these < $50 handheld stabilizers that work with simple shock abortion
Very close race. But, did you consider how much effort you used while stabilizing them? I guess that you have to concentrate more handheld.
I'm oldschool and use a GH4 with a steadicam :)
Love the sigma lens being used to shoot it from your boy :P is it 18-35?
Funny how much hate the GH5 gets, just because its not good at vloging. Who the f... cares? People thing its a must have for a new camera, why? I hate the vloging era on UA-cam tbh. Everyone needs to film his boring life and put it on UA-cam. (No real hate, got 2 vlogs aswell)
Get over it, the GH 5 is a great camera and most Sony fanboys dont want to admit it. The autofocus is not so good? I dont care, ill film with manual focus. I cant wait for my GH5 to arrive.
A camera is just as good as the filmmaker behind it.
totally agree
Autofocus, Low light, and bokeh is non existent. But other than that, it's amazing
facts
Would like to see the same tests with the GH5 on a monopod, holding it like it was one of those Steady Trackers.
