Who Has The Best Image Stabilization? GH5 vs X-T4 vs E-M1 III vs A6600

- In-body image stabilization is a key component to shooting good video, so we've created a special rig for shooting 4 cameras at the same time. For our first IBIS Showdown we'll compare four of the most popular enthusiast-grade sub-frame cameras in the Olympus E-M1 III, Fujifilm X-T4, Panasonic GH5 and Sony A6600!
Shooting all four at the same time and at the same focal lengths, and with no OIS or electronic IS to come to their aid, we'll steadily increase the difficulty level to see which IBIS systems can take the heat as the bumps and shakes begin to rise. Which model will stay smooth under pressure?
*(Firmware for all four models updated on June 23rd, 2020, prior to filming these tests.)
After watching dive into our news item which provides more details about the testing and overall procedures used. This is also the best place to ask us questions about the test itself:

Thanks for watching, everyone!

Olympus all the way. Owning EM5 first generation. Still discovering helpful features inside. What a capable outstanding camera it was back then and still solid today. I cannot imagine EM1 Mark 3 today.
Well done. Excellent, fair, and valid results. I would love to see more of these kinds of comparisons.
Wow!!! The presentation is next level. This guy knows how to do a comparison video. No standing in a room with a lot of blah blah blah but instead a real world 4-way comparison.
The most comprehensive and fair IBIS test out there. Nothing beats this!
seeing the title of this vid and before even watching it, i kind of had the hunch already that Olympus will come out on top and that the only one that could challenge it was the GH5.
this is a great video! thanks for sharing it!
I often forget how good the Gh5 IBIS is. Shooting X-T4 now, im glad, seeing a side by side, the X-t4 holds its own.
What do you like about the X-T4 vs the Gh5?
Love what I'm seeing from the X-T4, but man, that SOOC image from the GH5 is so impressive.
Amazing little cinema camera still going strong!
i dont own any of this but xt4 was suposed to be the 2 winer. *look clip at 6.35 and see how gh5 jiterings on road while the xt4 was super steady...but damn gh5 has better picture clarity.
Great methodology!!!! Amazing video, very creative to make that rig, going the extra mile! And the last scene talking with the ducklings was perfect!
From someone who almost NEVER shoots video, I can tell you without a doubt that the E-M1 Mark III with the 300 f/4 lens is an easy hand hold, down to 1/2 a second ..... been shooting with that body since Feb and it just makes life easy when shooting out in the woods for wildlife ...... on this testing, the XT4 was a pleasant surprise to see .....
We need a full frame ibis comparison
Thanks for taking the time to put together this comprehensive IBIS review. Much appreciated!
I very much like the various scenarios you created to test these cameras. Thank you.
EM1 III has great stabilization
GH5 has great color
Hope to see more of these kinds of tests
A great overall comparison. My own take was that the GH5 and X-T4 are on par overall (not "the same", buts strengths/weaknesses averaging out to a similar net result), but the primary reason for me grading it that way is that I adjusted the results of the walk. That was the one test I saw where I believe being on the bottom of your rig was a penalty, as it would naturally be prone to higher body motion from the natural swing of the hips and arms.
Overall, great stuff. I certainly have an even higher respect for the Olympus after watching this!
I thought the same thing regarding the positioning of the cameras and body movement. He should've moved the top row cameras down and lower cameras up and showed the walking results again. However, overall it was still pretty well done.
Great job. The G9's IBIS is a little better than the GH5. I'm curious if it's as good as the EM1 Mk3. Thanks for sharing the info.
Dave: Phenomenal, wonderful, clever, helpful review. I have been shooting internationally on my trips with the A6000 and loved the camera's small/sleek/comfortable size to carry with a wrist strap when I'm walking around 8 hours a day. I really have liked the images. I upgraded six months ago to the Sony A6600 but have not been able to travel due to COVID. It's a bummer to see how poorly the Sony A6600 does on your tests, and this is no surprise since reviewers have been commenting about the poor IBIS for some time. Since I want to shoot documentaries I'm stuck having to get a gimbal, such as a Weebill S. Thanks again for a wonderful review!!!
This was great! I'd love to see one where the old vs the new E-M1 III firmware is compared.
As expected, the OMD EM1 Mk3 is the champ!
Huh? GH5 clearly trumped that camera.
IMO it would have been better to have the G9 in this test instead of the GH5, because it has the better IBIS.
I was wondering the same.
i own gh5 and also used g9.
overall yes g9 is the better, but for IBIS, i acould say they are identical.
Really nice to see a camera review done in a scientific manner. I think G9 has newer/better IBIS over GH5 that can do up to 6.5 stops with non-stabilized lenses.
I love my Sony A6400 without Ibis! Money saver 😁
This is great. I would love to see a similar comparison using IBIS and a stabilized lens for each camera.
Very informative test, hopefully, rig find its purpose again with full-frame cameras.
Far too many UA-camrs (not true photographers) want Olympus to fail, yet time and again tests have shown how capable and good their cameras are. MFT cameras handle IBIS and sensor heat far better than APSC and FF cameras.
We live in such society 😑
MFT sensors are also quite a bit smaller than APS-C though, I mean the Fuji helt up pretty damn nicely for their first IBIS in XT lineup, shame their bodies are horribly ergonomically, this "retro" nonsense gotta die.
@@SMGJohn Fuji design is really good. Imagine having a menu like sony.
excellent side by side review, best I've seen, bumps and all.. great work
Very good test. Puts things into perspective...
Now we need the Oly IBIS with Panasonic's walking IBIS goodness combined.
Great review ! I Am choosing between these cameras and Wish to see some photo compare as well!
Another excellent test by Imaging Resource! Hahaha those geese were sure giving you a hard time :p
I expected the Olympus to be the best, but I am happy to see how well the xT4 did, since it is what I use!
The 2 dislikes are from Sony owners
Sony fanboys are the worst people I have ever seen
@@killingday13 Don't fool yourself. Every fanboy is obnoxious.
I’m new to cameras and just started using Sonys. This is the first negative thing I’ve seen in any camera comments on either UA-cam or online.
:)))
@@killingday13 So you've not met a Fuji owner then?
Up to the point with the bicycle in minute 5:50 I thought the GH5 was the overall winner. Then came the golf cart test at 6:28, and wow, Olympus truly is a class leader. If I was the Sony engineer who worked on the ibis of the a6600, I'd be ashamed of myself.
My conclusion - apparently the smaller the sensor, the easier to stabilize. M1 III and GH5 look better that the other 2. I'm impressed with the Fuji, though. And if I had to purchase one? If we are talking video specific camera, easily the GH5.
absolutely fantastic! please keep making those tests!
Really a big advantage of the m43 when it comes to IBIS. Olympus is simply fantastic and for walking the GH5 was surprising. I was also struck by the image quality in general, in which the GH5 came first, followed by Oly, Fuji and Sony last. Sony's ibis was a fiasco.
considering xt4 IBIS is is first FUJI attempt to put it in XT body, it works pretty well, I can only expect it to behave better with new cameras or firmware updates. it took panasonic quite some time to perfect it and now with g9 it seams to be absolutely amazing. Sony has long way to make it more usable, maybe camera body is a bit too small for it to work more smoothly
Very objective review. I own a Sony camera by the way :) There's nothing bad about sharing good information like this, that's also one way to motivate companies to improve their products.
Excellent test! Thank you!
Thanks... any chance of S1H vs R5or6 vs A7III vs Z5or6 next?
Plus a water test of all those...!
Pretty please :-)
Excellent video! - you clearly put a lot of thought and time in this excellent video!
Super comparison
Great test mate! Thank you!
Heeey duuude, yooow lurk lark a shoooter!!
The beat ever review i have seen so far. Thanks.
I don't do video as I am the worst at it, however, I watched out of curiosity and it was a very interesting test. I really like the rig you created.
As a Sony A7()III series owner, I know the Sony sucks, but I thought it was only the case on full frame. Looks like they are last period. The mount size is not the issue.
Since then the X-T4 received the 1.3 update that has made IBIS even better. While panning was good from the X-T4 at the time of your tests, the camera suffered from the same IBIS motion latency of the X-H1, but not to the same degree. Fuji has improved that further so that it's virtually non-existence now.
Glad to be an Olympus shooter. Wouldn't trade it for any other brand.
Thanks for the comparison, really well done!
well done man ! Excellent review... Thank you
Wow, excellent video realy, this is excellent comparison between best cameras ... Yes Olympus has best image stabilization, and Panasonic GH5 take best video quality... Others no...
Well done, thankyou for the video.
Love to see Canon R7 here!
Thanks man, very useful test! 😌
Thanks! As a GH5 shooter I am glad I bought that one.
Awesome comparison, thanks for your effort.
I have seen a demo of SONY showing their IBIS system working. Apparently it only handled all three axes in the sensor plane, as the Minoltas originally did. This makes me think, in view of the results of the A6600, that the two missing axes would be controlled by stabilizing in the lenses.
In fact, all of these testing models are equipped with 5-axis IBIS, but the IBIS rating of the cameras are different.
There was no missing axis, but Sony didn't tune the IBIS well on the two axes. Also, the rolling shutter issue (on Sony APSC model) is quite obvious if you moves the camera body horizontally a bit quicker when shooting videos.
By the way, GH5 has the same rating (5 stops) as A6600, but A6600's IBIS performance is a tragedy (versus the selected models in this comparison).
The geese at the end hahahahahha
Great test. Could you do this test with OIS and then OIS + digital stabilization? I'm mildly surprised to see the E-M1 take second in the walking scene since the UA-cam tests I've seen show the Olympus winning there too.
Es que caminando segun donde pisa la persona
Nice test but it should mention 'for video' in the title .
Great video. I watched your video and I bought E-M1 Mark III for the driving project. Seeing your video footage for bumpy ride seem very smooth. What setting of stabilizer do you have it on? Please advice.
My driving footage is very shaky/bumpy. Thank you.
Nice test. Would you that the IBIS of the E-M1 II is as good as the E-M1 III?
Great video test for IBIS. Could you please test the IBIS in low light situation for handheld photography? ie. Taking photos at night with kit lenses and slow shutter speeds hand held? Thank you
Thanks for the comparison. I’m thinking about switching to full frame from micro43 but my friend reminds me that Sony stabilization is not as good as Olympus. Not sure if the recent A7 series can compete with smaller sensors.
I've really been looking at the GH5, but this has me reconsidering for the E-M1 now. I couldn't even watch the A6600 video, it was making my nauseated. lol Great demo you set up thank you!
It would be really cool to use that same rig and cameras and do a rolling shutter test.
Very well done. Were you using the firmware version 1.02 on the X-T4?
Thanks
Best comparison, period. Expect to see a similar comparison including Canon R5 / R6
I really wish sony did a better job with stabilization. Even their action cams are honestly terrible compared to the rest of the market. I'm a sony guy, so I won't be switching but dang, I can dream right.
I am wondering if sensor size perhaps have something to do with this too...? I mean the Panasonic and Olympus are both m4/3, and the Sony and Fuji are APS-C. Perhaps resolution also plays a role too? Maybe the IBIS mechanism is able to react better on the m4/3m cameras because it's marignally smaller? Although the IBIS from the Olympus does give some convincing results that if it's this good for video, it must be quite good for stills (handhold) shooting for photography purposes.
Very informative test
Great is the EM1, even greater is your vidéo!
Sony has a long way to go when it comes to ibis.
Do it again with 2022 fuji, sony, and Panasonic pleasee
I wish it was a 4k comparison video
I've always had a question with IBIS stabilizers mounted on the sensor; how the wiring is affected by IBIS vibrations from the sensor to the electronic board of the camera?
They are usually work with magnets, the stabilization on the sensor.
I believe Pentax does good IBIS as well :D
and they have been doing it for a long time
Fabulous, informative video. Since you have rig and cameras now do auto focus and then dynamic range.
you can see from the video (especially on the clouds) that A6600 is the worst regarding DR
Was the IBIS on in the A6600?
...and this is the same question asked almost on every comparison :) it's that bad
You were too kind to the A6600; it totally sucked, especially considering how long it took Sony to add IBIS compared to the other three camera manufacturers.
Excellent, thanks a lot.
Good Work 😇😇😇😇
It is evident that an IBIS stabilizer will be able to work better on a small sensor and a large body; unlike the A6600.
Sir , in my case , with fujifilm xt 200 with 15-45 mm ois pz lens , there is some jitters at the edges of the frame when the footage is viewed on display after recording...! What's the cause ?
As a Sony owner i have to say that Sony's IBIS is terrible
MFT cameras make quick movement of sensor like a bounce which makes it look natural. X-T4 has a very hard sensor shift and makes it liik robotic
Great video
Wow, what a review!
very good comparison
Can you do the same with stills? I am thinking about switch back to Olympus from a Fuji XH1 or upgrading to an XT4.
lovely video thanks so much.
Thanks for sharing.
XT-4 with the much larger sensor did extremely well! First forest walk scene the em-1iii had lot of wobble!
PERDEDOR XT-4, OLY CHAMP, ES EVIDENTE, SIN O VES ESO PONTE GAFAS
Olympus IBIS is beast and even better with a Olympus 12-100 PRO lens. But i must say the image quality of the GH5 (and a6600) are better
You did not test for still photography !?
finally
finally
finally I found this video
thanks . usefull info
Awesome!
Thanks for test, you saved me from buying a6600, everything else is much better than sony ;o
E-M1 III
The upper cameras will have more amplitude.
Conceivably, although the whole thing will tend to rotate around its center of mass. It's interesting though, that the two cameras that did the best were actually the two on top, where as you note, you might expect them to have slightly greater motion.
@@daveetchells338 It means two upper cameras are even better than shown :)
Right. The grip just needs to be moved to the center (left and right walls), instead of the bottom.
