  • Using a Canon 5D classic mk1 for 12 years as a wedding photographer. A long term review of a classic 5d camera.The Canon 5D classic mk1 is an excellent camera for wedding photography. It has a full frame sensor with 13 million pixels. I have used the 5d mk2 and 3 but prefer this bargain of a camera as i can produce better photos with it. The sensor always holds its own against nikon/sony sensors. and the sharpness is great.
    I have put together a resource page for the Canon 5D with a lot more information about the 5D Classic Mk1. Here is the link. ⭐️ bit.ly/5d-free...

    I conducted a photo workshop and told the students to put a piece of black card over the screen, held in place with some Blue-Tack and only take 24 images at ISO 100 and 24 images at ISO 400 (switching between the two, depending on the weather) The fun was in finally seeing the images on the computer screen. This led to a very considered approach and a general slowing down of the picture taking process. Too much of todays work is about 'work-flow'. Speed, speed speed !!
    The screen tends to hinder the developing of skills. It is all about, take, chimp, delete. Take, chimp delete etc etc, until you have something you want. In the days of film, there was never that choice. Weddings could be a nail-biting experience until the final images were viewed. But that was part of the experience.

    I bought a used mk i recently and I'm having so much fun with it. The images from the camera are just so magical. I dropped it from about 2 feet and messed up the back screen so I just learned not to look at it like you mentioned in the video. It's such a liberating feeling not having to go through 17 menu screens and just shoot shoot shoot. It's like driving an old manual sports car. When I first got it I was a bit thrown off by how slow everything was but now somehow it feels faster.

Only problem is finding really good batteries these days. This camera delivers pictures of a quality that far surpasses most photographers needs.

      @@RichardBarleyphoto I own mine since 2007 and still love it, and treat it like a film camera and best friend... Same as you rarely look into a screen, I just prefer keep focus on the image through the optical viewfinder. I'm not convinced yet switching to EVF and mirrorless cameras, however it seems like DSLRs production is approaching to the end. What's your opinion about the new R5 and R6? Do we really need to switch to mirrorless? Probably it depends on the sort of work we doing...

    Hi Richard. I want to say thanks for these videos. I’ve owned my 5D classic for about 4 years. I was lucky to pick up a really nice later one which hasn’t turned itself into a mirrorless camera. I’d been struggling to get the best out of it or anything I was really happy with until I discovered your channel. I realise now that you need to treat this camera as if it’s a film camera and I’ve adopted your 200/5.6/200 method and what a difference it’s made. I had been shooting in Av and relying on the camera for metering …not any more!
    Thank you again for these videos and tutorials.
    All the best, Dylan

    I have just bought the 5D mki. It was an impulse buy, as I was looking to get a mk ii Then I watched a video by another UA-camr, and on the strength of that one video I bought the most expensive mk I on MPB at an eye watering £159! The camera arrived last week, and I spent a couple of hours walking around Old Leigh in Essex. I absolutely love this camera, it’s so simple to use. I set the aperture at 5.6 with the ISO set at 800, for that film grain look. I added a red filter in the settings for monochrome. I could just switch from neutral to monochrome with just a couple button pushes and a turn of the wheel. All the images straight out of the camera were fantastic. I don’t use Lightroom or anything similar. I like the feel of it as well, it’s heavy and well made. This now my oldest and main camera to use now.

    After a relentless search, I got one 5D Classic yesterday in surprisingly good condition. There seems to be no application capable to check the shutter count of this DSLR. So, couldn't do that. I'm using 5DII for a while already with full satisfaction.
    Bought the Classic mainly for the eye-soothing colors and film look in images. I'm an enthusiast shooting landscape and wildlife. I plan to use the Classic for landscape and street photography.
    Canon 7D takes care of my wildlife photography needs.
    The test shots I took with my new 5D 1 in RAW turned out pleasing images when processed with DPP.

    Since getting the 5DC, my 5D Mark IV has been collecting dust. I have never, ever had a camera where I'm seriously afraid to push the sliders so I won't change the original image. The SOOC out of this are heart melting. And yet you are one of the very few talking about this camera. Makes me wonder if people are blind or if only very few photographers care about color rendition? This is such an underrated camera. Yes the mirror might fall off, but it's so damn worth having this camera! I'm seriously thinking of buying another one soon.

    Great video Richard, just what I was after.
    My wife and I have owned 8 or 9 DSLR cameras over the years, ranging from my old faithful 300d to her 7d mk2.
    Before the digital era I ran a Canon eos5, the film version! EPIC camera!
    What you said is so true and on point. When buying a camera you need to know EXACTLY why you are buying it.
    For the first time since 2003 I just went mirrorless with my Canon M6.
    I am a fishing journalist that needs a defend APS-C cmos sensor with the most compact body to go in my backpack.
    My next purchase is a 5d mk1, hence why I landed on this video. I want it for portrait and landscape work.
    I love the simplistic design. I only ever shoot in manual or auto and that's it. Manual for composed photos and auto for quick candids.
    My wife has the 7d mk2 for sports and wildlife.
    I want a full frame but without the bells and whistles. The original 5 D is like a car with a super high quality engine, but no power steering, air conditioning or sunroof....just basic, simple and reliable.
    Thanks for the great video, I hope to order mine on Friday.

    The Canon 5D Classic is “a film camera in digital format”. It is hard to beat for portraits when used w/the 85mm, 1.8 lens. You can set up a dedicated B/W mode that has a classic film look that converting color to B/W does not achieve. Add an intervalometer and you a good time lapse camera too. I have owned mine since 2005. The simplicity of this camera is great for beginners since it encourages users “how to think” about photography... not “what to think”.

    Hi Richard, this is a great video and really enjoyed watching it. Two weeks ago my 5D was stolen whilst doing a portrait shoot in a busy bluebell location. I had a 70-200 2.8 lens on it and I was absolutely devastated! My insurance company were extremely efficient and some 48 hours later a 5DS and a new lens arrived at my front door. Whilst I appreciate the cost difference between the two and the fact I have gained a significantly newer camera, I honestly miss my 5D. Yes I now have 50 megapixels but it is far from forgiving and almost impossible to achieve the optimum shot first time. ! I absolutely loved the image quality of the 5D and being a wedding photographer could not of asked for a better camera! I fully intend on purchasing another one and would highly recommend 5D over many newer cameras. All the best.

    What a nice review - and I totally agree with you about the 5D sensor. It's so good for portraits and weddings, like you say, as there is a warmth and softness about the images (soft but still sharp, if that makes sense). Had mine for a few years now. Bought a mkii seven years ago and it is a leap forward from mki in some ways - but not in ALL ways. Like you say, the screen is there on the 5D to say 'yes there is a photo', you can't review the pic you just get on with the next part of the shoot. A photographer's camera!

    12mp is all you really need, this is a perfect portrait or landscape camera.
    No good if you want to use it for sports or birding as it just isn't fast enough plus it's a full frame and optical reach and speed are what's required for this.
    It's perfectly suitable for basic photography like weddings etc, the kind of thing anyone can do but many seem to think paying a fortune will get you much better results, unfortunately most of the time it won't, but people like the photos think they look good and are happy to recommend, instead of just buying a dslr setting it on auto and getting anyone to fire away

    Ive been a Nikon photographer most of my life at one stage running my own modelling agency training new and prospective models, male and female. However I have moved into astrophotography and was told 'get an old 5D and take out the infra red filter'. This gives much better images of distant nebulae. However a close friend of mine was a 'Canon man' and we always had friendly rivalry whose were the best images. I bought a cheap old camera nothing with itnot even a lens or charger but I may just leave the conversion to IR and have some fun with it first! Also bought a broken one for spare parts. The Full frame sensor is also a superb bonus for night sky!

      To be fair, all you can do is estimate the shutter count, as there is no way to actually get a reading with this camera. any 5d classic users want to share their exposure thinking? it seems like with the 5d classic you can overexpose a touch since the light roll-off is quite lovely. using a histogram, expose to the right? if so, how far? thumbs up.

      No matter which sensor you have, its best to learn how it reacts to light. The key is to use the same camera for a very long time. Most people sell there camera to quickly. Exposing to the right and over exposing works with 5D classic but does not with many Nikons

    I bought two used DSLR. A Canon Rebel, and a Nikon D50. I'm very happy with both purchase. Many years ago I couldn't afford any of them. So I bought others like Carena manual 35mm film camera, Minolta Maxxum 35mm film camera, fujifilm digital point and shoot 35mm camera. All are very good. So this year my opportunity arrived that I could afford two DSLR cameras within a $100 budget. Both were $45.00 each. People are upgrading. I jump to the used bargains. Win, win.

    The 5Ds (not R) is the best of the 5Dseries. 5D1,5D2's focusing system will frustrate most. I missed valuable moments with the 5D mark II and I HATED that camera. I loved the 7D.

    I have the EOS 5, 5DII and 5DIII, but I have never used the 5DI. I'm starting to think I should rectify that, partly for the camera itself and partly because I’m finding that gap in the models I have more and more annoying. I like simple menus and my 5DII is my favourite digital camera, unfortunately not my favourite camera as that is tied between my Zorki 4K (I got the one perfect specimen) and my Bronica ETRSi.

  • @normanskistreet
    @normanskistreet 6 років тому +1

    Great video and I gotta agree with most of what you say. Surprised a little by your views on the MK2 - I aspired to own that camera one day but caught the mirrorless bug and never looked back. Well I did look back but by then the MK2 looked like just a small upgrade over the MK1 and I got a Sony A7R2 instead. I only use old legacy glass on my cameras and the Sony mount can adapt just about anything and magnified view and focus peaking are great for nailing focus. The EVF and live view make getting the exposure correct a little easier and image stabilisation is another good plus.
    However I completely agree with what you say regarding keeping things simple so you can get on with taking pictures. Leica have the right idea in that respect but most other manufacturers are adding superfluous features to try and out-do the competition. It's quite a con really and admit to succumbing to the BS quite a lot myself.
    You've got me wanting to take my Canon 5D out again now - it's been in the cupboard for a while. Thanks for the trip down memory lane and reminding me about what's really important..

    When people keep saying it has film like pictures, what do they mean? Seriously what should I be looking at in the pictures?

    • @RichardBarleyphoto
      @RichardBarleyphoto  4 роки тому

      for me its when you remember a certain film you used and you liked it. Digital cameras can look - very digital. I like very neutral images, lower in contrast showing the full range of tones - not into contrast these days. A film like HP5 for black and white that i used allot, or Kodachrome.

    Maybe out of context but I have same feelings for my fujifilm s3 pro. Despite the small screen, spartan menu system, 5 point autofocus it churns out in my opinion pictures that rival 35mm cameras!I strongly agree with you on your opinion on screens... It's just a distraction. I mean looking at the screen to check the result every time one takes a picture says how much faith one has in his own skills. Just sayinCheers

      I would like to see a new manufacturer that takes the same route as Fujifilm but concentrated on a square sensor

    Hi Richard,
    Do you still shoot on the 5d? I shoot 5d, 7dii and 6d, but was contemplating selling the old beauty or perhaps not. I love the photos it produces (similar to my film cameras). Would you recommend keeping or selling in 2020? I was thinking other lens over keeping it, but in two minds.

    I sold mines 2 years ago in mint condition ( i bought mines right when it first came out). is great camera. Only reason i sold it was cause i wanted something smaller to carry around and i wasn't doing the same photos that i was doing years back. But from what i know these are still popular, Canon created a master piece and with this Camera it was the foundation to the rest of the 5D line to date.

      I like the 100D to carry around, great colour and simple to use with a large ISO button

      I'm thinking to buy a 100d for daily usage, and portraits and videos because of the tiny size and weight. What do you say about that?

    • @RichardBarleyphoto
      @RichardBarleyphoto  7 років тому +1

      like the 100d allot, wish i had never sold mine. Great big ISO button on the top, excellent files, great skin tones.....Canon should be paying me for this LOL. the 100d with the new 50mm 1.8 stm is a great combination. Add the 24mm pancake lens and you are set up for life. I think i might do it.

    • @canoksuz1903
      @canoksuz1903 7 років тому

      I was thinking tamron 17 50 f2.8 instead 24mm pancake. I already have 50mm 1.8 second version. So I guess I don't need stm version despite there is a little upgrade in image quality. And about small size are you comfortable when you hold it, shooting with it?

    • @RichardBarleyphoto
      @RichardBarleyphoto  7 років тому

      you hold the 100d differently to the larger slrs, try one in a shop. I find its fine, I would also look at the new mirrorless canon cameras. more expensive but very good

    Recently bought the Mk1 and the 24-105 F/4 L IS and over the moon with the quality of the image and finding your videos very informative. I’m looking to protect the lens with a uv and polarising filter for my outdoor work but can’t decide on which to buy. What would you suggest?

    • @konradmroczek2496
      @konradmroczek2496 5 років тому

      Uv filter doesnt protect the lens. If You drop the lens and filter breaks it will scratch the lens glass from the inside. I only use the lens hood.

    Hi, just wondering what do u think of using 5D classic for wedding photography in low light would u use it in wedding? and what lens would u use? anw, that a nice strap, I own a 5D classic as well ;)

    • @RichardBarleyphoto
      @RichardBarleyphoto  7 років тому

      I have always used the 5d mk1 for weddings with 24-105 and 70-200 f4 worth buying the 35mmf2 and 85mm1.8 for the evening reception. Strap was from eBay with a case for the Canon g10 I use it on both cameras

      I love that you've stuck with same camera for so long. I think that most of us make purchases that we don't need instead of laying down cash on one good thing and sticking with it. Bravo. I do hope that you are able to shoot the 5d classic for life. It is a spetacular camera for sure. Only thing would be getting the shutter serviced.

    • @RichardBarleyphoto
      @RichardBarleyphoto  7 років тому +1

      The 5d is a classic camera now, but it is not really that old. Keeping the same camera will improve your photography, it has mine. I don't have to think about equipment when I am using the same camera all the time. Servicing the camera may be a problem in the future, but for now its still ok.

    • @RichardBarleyphoto
      @RichardBarleyphoto  7 років тому

      The camera will have to be replaced at some stage, but I am sure a Canon 5D mk4 would be fine. I have just edited another wedding in lightroom today, and I still love the images that come out of it.

    I think this is the 3rd time viewing this one. Just gets better and better! My 5D classic (serial# 1020xxxxxx) seems to be getting a lot of noise even at lower ISO and using wider aperture lens. Is it possible that my sensor is failing? The rest of the circuitry appears to function as it always did. I really hope I do not have to place my favorite camera in the closet. Any thoughts including anything I may be doing wrong?

    • @RichardBarleyphoto
      @RichardBarleyphoto  4 роки тому

      i dont know, try making brighter images reduces noise , sorry for the very very late reply so many comments got lost

      Amazon ? Third party battery's are still around. The 30d and 40d take the same battery

      Highly recommend Duracell compatibles (can buy direct from their website) for the 5D classic and 5DII, they also supply charger. Performs better than Canon originals. Would avoid used Canon batteries.
