*10. Learn to count.
@@dividedstatesofamerica2520 YIKES, I found out about this video and song 9 years ago.....learn to mind your business
its SOOO good
@@sandybaby9573 That's on you. This is still 10 years old.
Same here !
Jake Gyllenhall is the only person I've ever known to look the exact same with and without a beard.
12 years later and I’m back for this
Me too! We're true legends. Or not 🫡🫡🫡
Mini FAQ Answered:
1. The 1st song to play is "America" by The Shoes.
2. This is not a trailer for an upcoming film. It's just a well-produced music video starring the extremely talented Jake Gyllenhaal.
3. The phrase "time to dance" can be interpreted literally as a command to dance or figuratively such as "time to fight/kill." Both examples are shown throughout the music video and both involve being present, feeling emotion, and knowing and understanding your body and its movements.
4. Why does Jake kill the White dancers in the beginning but not the Black dancers at the end? Throughout the video, Jake is searching for feeling, for emotion. He's numbed by drugs and alcohol. The dancers at the beginning are not feeling anything as well, wriggling their bodies off beat b/c they are not paying attention to the music. He kills them in an effort to regain feelings he has lost. He kills more "hipsters" to regain feelings to no avail. He even shaves his beard during the cold season to feel the harsher climate. It isn't until the Black dancers at the end show him a path back to those feelings. They're present. They dance to the beat. They feel. He pounds his fist in understanding and enjoyment.
Hope this helps. Cheers!
I don't think you understood the concept....
Giordano Caran Art is subjective so I'd be interested to hear you expand on your "pleasures and prejudice" theory.
Sandpaper Snail yeah, sounds good - agreed :)
Giordano Caran where's your version?
Fabse Joe I wrote it at some point. But it isn't written here anymore... =(
Genius..
The director of this video is clearly a genius.
He’s just murdering people
Hey mets make someone Who kills some dudes for 8 minutes with awesome music
First comment I've seen without talking about Jake Gyllenhaal
@dariuscarter3321 it's incredible that we can watch the same thing and half of it is lost on you
@@AiurIt's not so incredible. Very few can understand mysteries and symbolism in any meaningful context. Don't let someone else's ignorance take away from the beauty you've found here.
This needs to be a TV series:
Jake Gyllenhaal: Hipster Hunter
Totally agree. It would blow up the interweb
Really, how would you like it to be called? :
- a psychopath killing your friends?
- a psychopath killing you and your girlfriend?
- I love to be a psychopath?
- am I psychopath but I am too dumb to understand it?
- am I am too dumb to understand that I am watching a psychopathic video?

Amazing clip

this is just 8 minutes of jake Gyllenhaal killing hipsters
they ain't hipsters, they are cool people
***** they are
Hipsters arent real people.
My wet dream!
Not that there is anything wrong with that.....
Jake needs to do this more. Plus, he conveyed his role perfectly without a single spoken line. Who else can do that?
7 years late, but Ryan Gosling
Tom Hardy ?
@@nejiji which movie did tom hardy play as a quiet character tho?
again, late, but I just remembered another actor, Mads Mikkelsen
@@constantine9439 Lol CHARLES BRONSON in "THE MECHANIC" is superior to Ryan Gosling in DRIVE just saying. Also ALAIN DELON in the french film "Le samourai" plays the perfect quiet character/hitman

Johannes Buchholz ??? 😂 prob. .... pro-ba-ly

He’s getting so good at killing, that he didn’t expect his victim to collapse so quickly
This is actually pretty awesome. Would love to see a full lenght movie of this. :)
Reminds me of American Psycho
Neil that is a fine Chardonnay you're not drinking
watch Nightcrawler. its on netflix. dark as fuck but brilliant.
I watch this video once in a while since 2012 and never get bored. Both the music and video make this a masterpiece.
Why isn't this a movie? WHY ISN'T THIS A MOVIE?!
This is what I understand from the video: He has so much anger. He tries to get rid of it by killing people randomly although it never actually helps. But finally he sees the dancers, how they are into it and able to show their anger. Finally he starts to dance. Because its now time to dance. After he dances, the snowy scene comes (you feel pureness and relief) and you see his relaxed face. He is now free like birds. (last scene)
I think you are right about the end point but not about the beginning. I think he kills because he has a huge hatred for people at parties who dance just "to do like the others" and his anti-social anxiety prevents him from understanding this behavior. So, failing to understand them, he kills them. At the end, he sees dancers who dance not to conform socially, but to release their rages, their hatreds, their angers. Then, he understands why they are dancing and it's his turn to dance to free himself.
It's a beautiful interpretation. It reflects a piece of you.
He is such an amazing actor, i love how he plays like all this deep roles. And then at the same time, on his interviews he is so funny. Guess i never was happier about a music video that takes 8:30 minutes.
what an absoloutely MASTERPIECE
No one said a word and yet this music video has a book's worth of characterization. Impressive.
I Say My Word, trhiving by ludwif.
who else is here after Callum Turner mentioned in his W magazine interview this was the first acting gig he booked, fetus Callum is so cute 🥹
Hah, wow where is he?
I love revisiting this song and not only watching a movie that reenforces my adoration for Jake Gyllenhaal but also the overall chaos of this song
my favorite jake gyllenhall movie !!! XD
I can't quite put my finger on why, but I absolutely love this video. It's just...wow.
I love the song, as well...I'm starting to lose count of how many times I've watched this lol
so True
agreed
Enjoy the journey and the mystery, friend.
Jake is amazing, you see his interviews and he's so funny and outgoing and just a ridiculously sarcastic guys. And then you watch him act and if amazing to see the transformation between his apparent personality, and his characters. He plays these serious messed up characters and it amazes me how great he is in getting in touch with that and uhg i love him.
6:28 Jake G nods his head probably acknowledging the director when he said "action".
Good eye, didn't notice that.
Thanks. I was debating whether or not if it would be pointless to comment about it.
maxwell10206 I saw it too but thought it was probably to the driver as a sort of "thanks for letting me cross"
Jesse Dampolo What driver? If you're talking about the red car, he passes Jake G. way before he nods.
no hes just more like: ok, ill do this ` ill dance >.
Great short film about a man discovering his love for dance.
I had no idea Jake Gyllenhaal was a psychopathic man slayer. Is there anything this guy can't do? But seriously, his singular focus plays well against the unrelenting tempo of this song. Hats off to everyone involved with this beautifully composed video... though Justice and Air remain my faves.
Yeah, I think he is a fun actor but also sometimes things kind of bad things really happens in real life so is a pretty true depiction but that is based on just skimming thru the video above.
One of the best music videos I have ever seen: hands down.
di caprio, edward norton, and Jake Gyllenhaal, for me are best actors in curent generation.
***** cause oscars are joke, they are given to friends and overhyped actors. what do u want whole oscars owned by jews :|
***** might be true, not all, but some award recent decades dont make sense at all
+LeadFaun i think dicaprio and gyllenhaal couldnt care less..
Its as if you ask a singer if they care that they didnt win the MTV awards... fake awards for people who need fake recognition to boost their careers...
the only time i agreed with the oscars was during the lord of the ring times... but even there you can recognize the commercial potential behind awarding LOTW with so many oscars
Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender are up there too for me
DJGeeBill m both are great, but they still need like decade of good movies to make then they will be in same league like those above
This music video is a short movie I return to every now and then. And the music is too good too.
This is the best music video of all time
I've been stanning Jake Gyllenhaal so hard lately, I ended up here xD
just woke up with this song on my mind.
Found this music video cause of a Reddit thread. Didn’t know it was from 12 years ago and I can say it held up pretty well for being a 12 year old MV. Brilliant directing and brilliant acting to withstand the testament of time!
Tony Stark is right when he said Quentin Beck is unstable
I'm a simple women, I see Jake Gyllenhaal, I click.
Same
Jake Gyllenhaal takes any character and rips it! Dudes got a lot of talent as an actor.... ever since he was a youngster. Easily one of the best actors around.
I heard this was a good music video but I did not expect to watch an awesome cinematic film starring Jake Gyllenhall damn that was sick
"Just remember, I wouldn't ask you to do anything I wouldn't do myself."
Reference from nightcrawler
I almost feel he learns his violent actions and convulsions can be channeled through dancing. That's what I took from this video. That he is compelled to do it, like people who naturally feel to dance when music is playing. Such a powerful video.
04:17 that eye stares right into your soul
This song still amps me up to this day when it comes on during workouts and I can vividly picture the music video.
This is art. Gyllenhaal is a force.
Jakey is literally so talented. I just can't 🥺🥺❤❤
That section starting at 7:28 always gives me goosebumps.
Coming back to watch this again after years and barely realised FKA twigs is in this!!!
Wow i'm speechless, i never think i would see Jake playing a serial killer but here it is and he played it so well😭, this is amazing
I don't know why but I just find it so funny when he slips on the snow lmaooo
new personality unlocked
The voraciousness in his eyes and the starved, depraved dissociative persona, then to finally feel something. Jake Gyllenhaal, you couldn't have delivered this better. Swoon.
People ask me "what's your favourite music video?"
Every time I end up going " T I M E T O D A N C E IN THE CITY!"

Happy Birthday Jake Gyllenhaal.! ❤❤
Looking forward to the day Jake Gyllenhaal plays a mafia boss.
closest he got was a greasy cop in Prisoners, go watch that!
Andrei Neagu
the movie rocked. I never knew what was really going on, specially with the Maze guy. I really liked that movie and Gyllenhaal's performance was also good
lukaj1n The maze guy was one of the kids that got kidnapped by crazy granny, he got fed so much acid he turned crazy. He kept drawing mazes cause the husband of granny had a necklace of a maze (the dead guy jake found under the preist's house) . Any more questions? :')
EvitalovesThings
Haha thanks, but I watched the movie too! did you see any question mark in my comment? :) And the drawings werent because of the necklace but because he enjoyed the idea of a maze, being lost in eternity. IF you really liked the film you should watch the extra content they made. Jake Gyllenhall didnt have much to say but the director explained a lot, specially why he approached the direction in the way I said, without really knowing whats going on the entire movie.
I was so fucking happy and surprised to hear they used this song for the movie Waves. The ppl who made it deffo know what they are doing
Great clip, would have been perfect if jake's character actually busted out into some totally insane dance at the end.
*****
Ha, dancing with death I guess.
Нe did))
I really wanted that to happen haha, I actually said it out loud and urged him but he kinda did in his own way
That'd be some stupid high school musical shit
that would of been cheesy af

Its 2099 and im still listening to this absolute unit of a song and short film almost 😅
Totally didn't realise that was FKA Twigs dancing at the end.
IT IS right??
@@anna94d errr yes
This artwork is still great!
Looks like Jake Gyllenhaal is playing Nightrawler *and* Southpaw in this.

Spectacular video and music.
I think for this music vid. The meaning of Jake where he is looking for something real, where the other hipsters yet for him is uninteresting because of their lack of passion in the so called party, hence the killing of them. Where the ending he approached the two real dancers who are enjoying the music, which made him to feel and also to begin to dance.
Dunno, my suggestion. sorry for bad english.
I like your explanation. In my opinion, he was trying to fill his feelings of inevitable anger. He tried various fitness exercises, he tried medicine and drugs but killing people more specifically hipsters because of their pretentious lifestyle was the closest to satisfying that want. In the end, he watched two passionate dancers and when he danced, he realized that it felt good that it was filling that void of anger, it was the solution..
I think he is punching that wall because he consciously wants to kill them but cannot do it and he feels frustrated.
You get a 6/10 for your English skills. Not too bad but you could use some work ;)
Sidney Leung Good interpenetration. What I'm getting from the video is that Jake is sick and tired of people being selfish. Everyone in this video is dancing with a girl or looking at a girl in hopes to hook up. The guy in the beginning is doing molly(mdma) with the girl. And as the night progresses, they're all over each other. Once Jake slices her throat, the man just dashes off for his own safety. The next montage is Jake trying to improve himself. Get into a better shape. I think there's mild connection with the baby signifying purity. Then it's just him being alone, and during his shave, he gets an idea to go on a rampage to kill the pretentious - hipsters. This is where he goes on a hunt to clubs and parties. He is still in the mindset that his loneliness is a result of others being fake. During the restaurant scene, he realizes that nothing is changing. He is still alone. That's when he goes to a club and sees the two people dancing. They are full of internal energy and they are not affected by the external world. This is where Jake breaks his own barriers and humbly starts to move to music. The last scene though is where I'm a bit puzzled. He is still alone, yet it's hard to tell whether he feels better because he stopped giving a sh*t. Or is he the same and him dancing didn't have any effect.
interPENEtration?
I keep coming back to this video. It's one of my most favorite ever
That upward shifting sound at 7:40 gives me goosebumps.
I'd turn gay for this guy.

why? some serial killer fetish?
xXxArnyxXx no, and I can't stand it when people are infatuated by serial killers lmao
