2:16 is straight up laced with crack!!!! Let’s get one thing straight: she still has ‘it.’ I remember seeing her in LA years ago, and just her breathwork alone was mind-blowing. The atmosphere was a damn stampede ; it was the kind of concert where you wouldn’t necessarily want your friends to know you’re there. When she finally hit the stage, the auditorium literally vibrated; even bitches serving beer were concerned asf lol She was fashionably late, of course, but delivered a powerhouse performance with just one outfit and no dancers. When she pulled out that megaphone, I knew she’s stayed true to her artistry. She has a strong following, selling out shows from LA to Sydney (this year) I used to separate an artist’s private life from their art, but nowadays, it’s hard to ignore the problematic aspects but because now in general people associate you are okay with their behavior if you listen to them. Still, you can’t deny her talent. She knows how to keep us hooked, dropping a song here and there to keep that coin rolling in her purse, i will forever be a fan lol
For people wondering: yes it sounds British as the song was marketed primarily for the UK dance/ club scene. Made its way to airwaves of radio 1…etc. Azealia is a Harlem native…212 is NYC area code. Banger…not so much in the states.
The lyrical content would've posed major issues for normal distribution channels In the US. This was a solid decade before WAP. It got heavy play in queer bars on the coasts tho. My normal dive in SF played this every night.
I’m struggling to see how Azealia Banks with that board American accent sounds British (none of the many British accents were represented here)… Most North Americans don’t really know what a British accent sounds like (truly), so I’m not surprised to here many thought this “sounded British”.
The song sounds pretty NYC to me at least. Feels very much inspired by the ball scene and queer culture in general, which makes sense Bc she spent some time in that culture.
"What you gon do when I appear W-w-when I premiere Bitch the end of your lives are near This shit been mine, mine" I literally love these lyrics (2:16)
Do you? Do you "literally" love these lyrics? Do you wanna marry them? Do you wanna have elevendy million of its babies? Do you love it like your firstborn, like your mother? Me, I dig certain lyrics, I feel them in my soul... figuratively speaking of course but I don't "literally" love any of them. How about we stop using the term literally so figuratively? I'd appreciate it The Literally Constable
This comment is so accurate. I think it's also gonna convert haters into lovers. I did not like Azealia ONE BIT. I thought her image was fake and how she expressed herself on Twitter was so over the top. After watching her interview and getting to see her being vocal in a more personal environment was refreshing. People are different in person than on paper (in this case 120 characters on Twitter) I've been watching her videos and I'm kind of a fan now, lol! I respect her and her opinions.
Spite of what we think of her, you cannot deny that she's a talented singer-songwriter. This song definitely helped define a decade, and like many others I got to witness it
@@DaveG425 No baby. Adele has a very soulful voice, and she’s white as snow. I much rather someone say I have a voice full of soul and passion, than for someone to say I have a “black” voice.
The whole soul genre is a black genre. Soul brothas and soul sistas refer to black people. Sure people are amazed with adel because wow, she’s white, but has so much “soul” in her voice. Nah, man! Be happy you can experience it as a novel, great song now. You have the benefit of already knowing she self-sabotaged. It's heartbreaking for me; i wanted to be a fan so much, but it's the hateful personality, attacking great artists with no provocation that did it for me.

in 2012 there was an art exhibition in my home town. inside a mysterious tent with a bunch of interactive exhibitions, playing on some weird crt monitor was the first minute of a music video, on loop. i was only 11 years old but there was something about the music video and the song that got stuck in my head. i was entranced. plus there were swear words and i was really confused how it was allowed to be playing out loud. 12 years later AND I FOUND THE MUSIC VIDEO. love this shit so much. core memory.
It's 2022, and I still love this song as strongly as I did in 2012 when it came out. Really sad Azealia herself threw away her opportunity to really hone this raw talent here.
Azealia’s house music is better than both drake and Beyoncé’s house music (Beyoncé’s album is still a bop, don’t get it twisted) but no one can make better house music than Azealia Banks. She was ahead of this new house music trend that is resurfacing now.
Me gusta cómo pone en su lugar a varias que se creian estar arriba por algo que este año ya sabemos porqué y cómo llegaron arriba... Dejen que la música funcione de forma descentralizada y surjan grandes canciones como ejemplo, esta canción!
The reason the general public hasn't embraced Azealia is cuz she brings a brash sense honesty and rudeness that people just can't get down with. It's fun and confident. She's not afraid to be aggressive and her lyrics aren't easily digested because they're more thought out and clever. Just shut the fuck up about looks or numbers of hits and enjoy the music. This shit blastin in a club is the best.
While I agree with your overall point, Ryan, I do think she'd get way less flak, and possibly be embraced by the mainstream a la Kanye, if she were a man. She's a genius, but the American public prefers their women a lot more comatose.
This chick is the real deal, I think. Like Bjork, Jack White, Brian Eno, Q-tip. She's bat shit crazy and incredibly creative. She's ahead of her time and making a new sub genre of hip-hop. She has said some stupid sh*t but who cares. Her music contribution is still incredibly important. The thing with Iggy is pointless, it's not iggys fault she was nominated for a Grammy (even though A. Banks is clearly the better artist). Kanye is a genius mixer but he can't spit like Jay z or this chick...In fact he's pretty terrible at verse. I do love a lot of his tracks, though.
Holy crap! Whole this video is shot in just one brick wall on the backround and it has more views than some overproduced stuff. Well done! Good song throughout 7 years!

The lyrical content would've posed major issues for normal distribution channels In the US. This was a solid decade before WAP. It got heavy play in queer bars on the coasts tho. My normal dive in SF played this every night.
@@jenkins85 I'm in Canada and I remember hearing it in a bar, and thinking it was M.I.A. in a particularly vulgar mood.
Harlem !!!
I’m struggling to see how Azealia Banks with that board American accent sounds British (none of the many British accents were represented here)…
Most North Americans don’t really know what a British accent sounds like (truly), so I’m not surprised to here many thought this “sounded British”.
The song sounds pretty NYC to me at least. Feels very much inspired by the ball scene and queer culture in general, which makes sense Bc she spent some time in that culture.
Lazy J wrote one of the best balloon tunes..the grin says it all ..he knows it's classic. Azealia smashes the vocal out of the ball park.

@@DaveG425 No, the OC definitely had it right the first time. Let’s not start the foolishness.
No one says any white girl has a “soulful” voice. Its cuz she black
Meaning she sounds black. You never hear anyone say taylor swift has a soulful voice bc she sing white girl pop music.

in 2012 there was an art exhibition in my home town. inside a mysterious tent with a bunch of interactive exhibitions, playing on some weird crt monitor was the first minute of a music video, on loop. i was only 11 years old but there was something about the music video and the song that got stuck in my head. i was entranced. plus there were swear words and i was really confused how it was allowed to be playing out loud. 12 years later AND I FOUND THE MUSIC VIDEO. love this shit so much. core memory.

These reason why the public hasn't embraced her music is because its fucking trash.
While I agree with your overall point, Ryan, I do think she'd get way less flak, and possibly be embraced by the mainstream a la Kanye, if she were a man. She's a genius, but the American public prefers their women a lot more comatose.
She's only 23. Kayne was 27 when his first album dropped. Give her time.
Your comment makes the most sense.
