Would it be practical to put this receiver in a bag with battery power?

This receiver could easily fit into a bag. You just need to make sure you have enough space for the output, power and antenna cables on the back of the unit. Maybe right-angle cables would be best. Battery draw would depend on how many channels you're using but battery power is a viable option for this receiver.
