We've typically found that the stuff made by the cosplay and prop collection community stands up to close inspection much better than most film-quality props. While there are always exceptions, most of the stuff you see on film is made to be seen from far away on a screen, not from the kind of close distances that you see stuff at an event like Dragon*Con or Comic-Con.
spuddie It's not that easy? Mine would look like shit in comparison? I don't know how to work with soundboards? Listen, that's a professional quality prop. If I want something that pretty, there's no way I'm gong to be able to make it. I don't have the skills, the workspace, or the materal.
The Thomas helmet took him 4 months, but he also made a Guy-Man helmet (for his second prop) in 17. If you want to buy a finished Guy-Man helmet, it's $25K
You CAN actually rip the models from Halo 3, Reach and even 4 by copying the .map files of the game, and extract everything with a program named "Adjuntant". You can extract them in .obj and then open it with 3ds max. You can even rip the textures too.. There are plenty of Halo Custom Edition maps that are actually using the ripped models from these games..
That end thing you guys did was hilarious. Cutting the epic music and gallery shot with the guy inside the suit asking how to make the gun shoot fast. Brilliant job.
"how do you, like, make it shoot a whole bunch?" BWAHAHAHAHA! seriously though that is very impressive. a whole year for that projects completion makes actually commercially selling things like that difficult I'd think but the final product is extremely impressive!
***** It is worth checking out his website, blog and fb page if you liked this build, there are many more awesome projects :) his URL is in the video description.
It would be so great to see like an unboxing video with Adam there to what his first reaction to this would be. I know its been some time but i think Adam would get a huge kick out of how much work and detail went into this gun!
Volpin is so easy speaking, so comfy in front of a camera, I love that guy he's so inspiring! His props looks like they have been made by huge companies, but they are made in his garage... Fantastic, keep on going I wish you all the good stuff! Cheers from Belgium :)
There's sooooo many dedicated and passionate people out there who've pretty much made everything in the halo universe come to life as props or fully functional things. All we need is a story and a very good director, and a decent budget and you have a academy award-winning blockbuster halo film. (I'm not referring to Forward unto Dawn or Nightfall. Not saying they where bad, but you can tell how restricted they where due to budget issues.)
13:04 killed the mood completeley, the camera pans through all the bad ass spartans posing, and then he just blurts out "how do I make them shoot out a whole bunch at once?" xD killed the mood completely, so funny!
It wasn't all he did during the nine months. It's something he worked on regularly over the nine months, but with this kind of work, there's a fair amount of waiting for resins to cure, paint to dry, etc.
Most rights holders don't mind stuff like the work Harrison does as long as the prop makers aren't mass producing kits and aren't making too much money on them. The classic example is Star Wars stuff, like stormtrooper armor. Lucas doesn't make money on people who are selling stormtrooper armor and R2-D2 parts, but because thousands of people have armor now, they can get fan stormtroopers and astromech droids to appear at events around the world.
I haven't played much halo for a while, but while I did I was deadly with one of these. It is by far my favorite halo weapon, and I'm very pleased that one actually exists.
its not that its expensive to make, its the fact that the detail to which this is made is insane. if you just want a needler like thing thats a decent model im sure you could find it much cheaper. but if you want an actual needler right down to the most minuscule of details, this is for you. and that is going to cost a lot more, mostly because this is the only place you could feasibly get it from without straight custom order.
Would be cool if the lights went off on the needles one by one in sync with the audio of the gun being fired and went back on when you hit a reload button with the audio for that as well.
If I were 10 years older and had a couple more hundred grand to blow on something like this, I'd love to commission you to hire a team to build me a street-legal warthog, a full-size Master Chief costume for me, a full-sized Arbiter costume for my friend, and a full-size Cortana costume for my girlfriend. But alas, I lack the ten years and couple hundred thousand dollars.
BigNastyreborn actually no the needler is an assault weapon designed and used primarily by the elites and grunts are the same size if not taller than a normal person. It is only next to master chief that they look small because he is freakishly tall. Next time you play halo compare a grunt beside a marine, they're the same height. Also considering a grunts arm and hand is considerably bulkier and larger than a man's, this is the perfect size.
well, you are looking at about 100 or more hours of work to produce the first one. and you dont know if the molds are just right until that first one is finished. so that means he has to sell 5 kits just to break even including the labor and product sent out. and there are not a lot of people out there with the ability to make these. i think 600$ is reasonable, but you would REALLY want to have it. also, this gives you the ability to create more than one. so you can sell them to cosplayers in your area. so lets say you sell em for 150-200$ each. you would have to sell as many as him to break even again.
Murray Kitson people underestimate the price point of fabricating a precise homemade mold. I'm at an art school and one guy here once just wanted to mold a small transparent picture frame. For that he had to cnc-cut a plastic shape, make a mold out of it and repeat that. In the end, it costed him around 250 bucks. For a plastic frame.
Murray Kitson Hmm... Making molds of a piece you bought, in order to make money yourself, isn't that called "recasting" ? Not something propmakers really like, but I can be wrong. :)
You could have compartments like in glow sticks that has a breakable separator but it be a chemical reaction based explosive. Where there is a thin wall inside of the glass shard that separates out the two different reagents needed to cause a small explosion once combined. Make the separator shatter on impact or start when fired. So that before they hit or during flight they erupt. Then you have a true needler and a WMD. Win/Win!
That was a great idea, I can't make anything ever like that in my life. But if I could make some suggestions; I would suggest that when one fires the gun, the LED crystals on top go out one by one. When none of the LED crystals are lit, the gun makes a reloading sound effect followed by the crystals lighting up again. My second idea would be so that the gun would vibrate when it shoots. I would recommend using the vibrator from a playstation controller due to how compact and effective it is. There should also be some isolation so the led lights don't disconnect and stop working. That way the controller will feel more realistic when it fires. My last suggestion would be to add some purple LED lights or a lazer to where the barrel is supposed to be and have it flicker everytime it shoots so that way, it looks nicer from the frontside point of view. Maybe these ideas could be used for a second model? :) If so that would be great!
Wow it looks so real at the end when reach crew is holding it it would have been cool if a pink neon light went off at the end of it when you fired it but wow still a very well do pace of art 10 out of 10
Saying Halo is on PC is a bit generous. Two of the Seven main games are available, one is restricted to people using Windows Vista or better and has a butchered hit detection system. That's not including Halo Wars, Spartan Assault and Spartan Strike. Halo 1 was released on PC 2 years after the Xbox version, and Halo 2 was released 3 years after the Xbox version. These PC versions are, like, afterthoughts haha. Their weapon models are too geometrically simple to be a good basis for a modern looking needler. The guy's not at fault for ignoring them. Don't take it so seriously.
awesome project this guy really did a quality piece. i bet he's gonna get some calls from hollyweird for some movies with this interview, good for him.
Q Branches Voice: AH Yes 007 the Type-33 Guided Munitions Launcher or also known as the Needler. It can fire 22 crystalline shards that are guided until they impale a target. Usually 8 needles fired at a target will have the same effect as a plasma grenade. I recommend you bring this one in pristine and working order 007.
I went out and found all the original 3D model files that were used in halo CE (PC) back in 2011. You would not believe how tempted I am to paint the halo armor I'm working on to look like Caboose, cause honestly that shot of him at like 12:40 pretty much seals the deal.

That Needler prop is _immaculate._ I would love to have something that gorgeous, but I'm pretty sure I couldn't afford it...
Make one yourself then...

Aren't there toys of the needler
You could modify it a little to make it look more realistic
TheDumbOne The toys that are mass-produced, from what I saw when I last looked, were mostly either a) for kids or b) accessories for action figures.
I love how caboose is in the thumbnail, staring into the needler barrel :)

"How do you make it shoot like a bunch?"

Alex Himerov It was just funny :P
are you sure? i don't think so(
+Noah Moraes You're not funny.
please. don't preach
Beautiful man just beautiful. I'd like to see a Covenant Carbine or a Plasma Rifle.
that hex airbrush thing is brilliant :D looks great
My favorite gun in the Halo franchise, would love to have this
Alex they sell them at gamestop, but its plastic.
Isaias Acosta eh, thanks anyway
This is made from plastic too. It's just much higher quality than something you'd buy at GameStop.
For sure
My god this thing is beautiful. And the switch between plugged in and battery!? Why can't mass manufacturers figure that out!

This is so fucking cool. I ain't even into Halo that much. This makes me want to try out prop making.
Finally somebody builds a Halo weapon the right way!
It would be cool if they made a system that retracted the needles as it was fired, along with a pew noise :p
That looks so amazing! My favorite weapon design/mechanic in the Halo series.
A simply astounding prop, but frankly, I prefer the Needler sounds from Halo C.E. :P
That end thing you guys did was hilarious. Cutting the epic music and gallery shot with the guy inside the suit asking how to make the gun shoot fast. Brilliant job.

Harrison did a lot of other builds over the course of that year too. As well as selling castings and kits of previous builds.
makes sense. I'm not sure what goes into this kinda thing.

Charlie Wellman ...you better be....
It's called Mark V Mjolnir Class Assault Armor....
Such skill. I really appreciate seeing the weathering and paint layers and tiny details.
The gun looked amazing on those spartan cosplayers too!
The EOD helmet still reminds me of a stormtrooper -- especially when it's white like at 12:53
Yeah the halo 3 one definitely but the halo reach one is way better looking
HsinHao Wang fuck me

DAFT PUNK HELMET IN THENBACKGROUND!!!! Thomas Bangalter!

Jerry Simmons grunts are 5ft tall and master chief is 7ft tall and is 1 ton
Brandon Gibbs Jr 1 ton with armor
BigNastyreborn The needler was built as a one hand for elites, the crystals are even from a moon around Sanghelios.
That mold that they talked about in the beginning. That would make a sick paintball hopper
The green Spartan at 12:37 is my brother, and the Caboose (from Red Vs Blue) at 12:48 is my cousin. Super cool to see them in a Tested video.
