It sounds a lot warmer than a DX-7. Mainly because of the simpler algorithms and the chorus effect. I wonder why Yamaha never fitted the DX-7 with a chorus. Even the cheaper DX-21 has one.
I don't know if that would have been such a good idea, given how noisy the original DX7 was, although I suppose chorused digital noise could be musically useful somehow...
They were also trying to make the DX7 as economical as possible. It’s a hypothesis that adding effects circuitry in 1983 would have made it heavier and pricier.
Thanks a lot for sharing this! First time I ever heard the GS-1 raw and directly. I have only standing in front of a defective one once. The sonic range is surprisingly wide, from very delicate to pretty fat and sometimes warm character. Plus I love the recording, including all the tacks and squeaks from the keyboard, the buttons and especially the pedals!
This is wild! Thanks for the video of this rare machine. Vangelis used one of these on the Antarctica score and also on Private Collection with Jon Anderson in 1983.
I've found some VSTs which emulate this GS1. One of them is the "Xils Lab KaoX". The other is the "Syntronik Instruments GS-V" bei IK Multimedia. I don't know if any of them is capable of creating the sound used in "Die Tänzerin" bei Ulla Meinicke which was famous then in 1983 (GS1 played bei Edo Zanki). ua-cam.com/video/fjr7SvWNJKQ/v-deo.html Could you please tell me if you know this sound and if you can create it with your genuine GS1. I'm looking for the VST only to get THAT sound accomplished. Before i buy one of those VSTs i'd rather know that. Thanks in advance!
Yeah! Just a few a days ago i got the news about IK multimedia's Syntronik Summer Sale! I've purchased the Syntronik 2 - GS-V. There are a lot of presets which are quite close to the sound i was looking for. This VST seems to be very close to the original GS-1 !!!
@@MICHAJO27 Fun fact: The presets thats included are heavily modified original gs1 sounds. To get the real presets you need to enable only one ”osc” in the edit tab and then click that single ”osc” to get the list of gs1 presets. Then just disable all effects except ensemble maybe.
Thanks a lot for your hints and tips! I'm just playing around with the "Classic GS Electric Piano" presets and find number 4 quite close (with a second OSC called "GSV-Brass") I think "Ensemble" to be quite sure as effect being used in the original. Again: Thanks!
that first patch you're playing in the beginning what patch is that it's the patch that's used in human nature but what is the patch called? i got to get a sample of that lol
From what I remember I the first patch I used was Acoustic Piano III a pretty basic sound but I had the ensemble engaged on the synth so it gave it a sort of chorus effect as well.
I associate this model with Toto and Elton John. Did Frank Stallone also own one? I’ve gotten into the habit of saying that the shape was based on the CP-80. Is that accurate, though?
You can see one of these in action on the Grateful Dead “So Far” video. Brent uses one

Without any chorus or reverb, the DX-7 sounds very ugly. So even with extra noise a chorus would benefit the harsh sounds.

The pedals need some WD-40 applied

Supertramp used the Yamaha GS-1 synthesizer on their 1982 album Famous Last Words. It’s the string synthesizer used on Its Raining Again.
Thank you very much for sharing this.
Africa from toto was made with the gs1
The album "mint jams" was made using the gs1
They also used the iconic CS-80
@@hangliderYes!!! Casiopea #1!
And elton john album leather jackets for me is a great album in my personal opinion
Do you know what sounds were used?
Inspiring tones.....👍👍👍
I always liked the warmer sounds of the GS1 compared to the DX7.
