Joan as Rosalinde.
Funny anedocte about Joan in this operetta:
When doing Die Fledermaus, Joan decided that since her character - Rosalinde - is impersonating a Hungarian when singing the 'Czardas', she would learn the aria in Hungarian. She and her prompter Susan Webb worked tirelessly until they got it just right. Joan brought the house every night. However, San Francisco's preeminent music critic, who often disparaged her, blithely wrote in his review "As usual Sutherland's diction, she might as well sung the Czardas in Hungarian". The fact is he had no clue. Joan's reply to the critic "But sir, I was singing in Hungarian!".

everything about this is perfect...the voice, the trills, the everything.....and to top it off she's singing in Hungarian...the cherry on top of the cake!
Fantastica come sempre
I love Dame Joan's speaking voice with the accent! I wish I had had a chance to see her live.
She had a voice of unparalleled opulence, dimension and virtuosity, with charisma to match. I saw her in FLEDERMAUS, NORMA, BOLENA, and in recital. In the FLEDERMAUS, she executed a can-can across the stage while singing the Czardas. Extraordinary.
The anecdote regarding Sutherland singing in Hungarian and the critic really is one of my favourite opera related stories. Right along with Adelina Patti over-embellishing Una Voce Poco Fa beyond recognition with Rossini in the audience. He met Patti backstage and upon being asked how he liked her performance of the aria he stated “ Marvelous Madame, who was the composer”. Lol
Rossini really said: "Who is the composer? ... this is filthy" (the arranger of "Una Voce Poco Fa" was Adelina's own brother-in-law and teacher, which she always denied, as she proclaimed herself self-taught).
@@andyberistain6743 To be honest, I wish the other version was the true one. Thank you, though, for the background.
Amazing
J'adore !!
Joan Sutherland one said this aria (the czardas) was IMPOSSIBLE to sing. I think she proved herself wrong . Its really hard though.
It really is fucking impossible tho aint it???
Melania MoneyPenny It’s hard to sing it accurately. Sutherland managed it very well. Sills (I have a private recording) also sings the socks off (and adds Hungarian “yelps” in a few spots). Barbara Daniels does a great job too.
Thank you for another wonderful post.
I wish SF Opera still had this level of singing. Well the chorus and orchestra are great but the principles are hit or miss
I saw ORLANDO last year and I was appalled. It might have well have been a university production.
Don’t expect today’s singers sing like those in the 50s thru 90s, those days are over.
Amazing!!!!
what language is 'Hugarian'??
That's the language they speak in Budpest, Hugary.
C'est tres bien vocalement parlant .Mais a t on vraiment ici l'esprit " mittel Europa " ?
In any language, you can't understand a word she's singing.
It really is fucking impossible tho aint it???
